man I hope Georgetown isn't done sending out notifications (and if they're all by phone that seems likely, right?)

Writing sample: does it have to be on your AOI?

Yeah I'm not that big of Honneth either but I'd like to work for him for the same reason (and really I'd take anyone at such a school who takes reification seriously as a philosophical Thema). -

Spinoza weighs pretty heavily not just on German Idealism but also elsewhere in Continental philosophy (especially Deleuze and French Spinozism as such) so Spinoza despite being more of a "history of philosophy" figure and less "continental" is pretty sexy to Continental philosophers (as he should be). But I'm sure Johannes already knows as much. also Neuhouser, Honneth and Goehr are my dream team so I share your Columbia anticipation, Johannes! -
any argument that argues that Wittgenstein has an argument

here's hoping we might be colleagues at ND, philosophia!
-
just got an email about half an hour ago - accepted to Notre Dame, specifics about funding and visit to follow. i am beyond elated.
-
if you're that into continental philosophy you should already have learned a language other than English anyway
-
Idk, I think I'd take the pain of a certain rejection over the pain of a suspended uncertainty caught in a horrible oscillation between hope and despair but I'm weird. I wish you the best nonetheless : )
-
Yeah ND is killing me. I hadn't got any of that wave of rejections so I (probably unrealistically) have high hopes and I keep expecting it any day now
-
If we could just hear from Notre Dame and Georgetown this week I'd be content.

you have to pay to get that sort of ad, no? how much is it?

Issues related to sex- and gender-based harms/crimes
Weltgeist replied to ianfaircloud's topic in Philosophy
exactly: and this is why we always support the accuser and give them the benefit of the doubt and full assistance, investigative and otherwise; which does not mean automatically taking what they say to be incontrovertible proof, and which does not mean one somehow tacitly considers that they might be somehow mentally unstable or lying for whatever purpose. You are more likely to get drafted into the NFL than falsely accused of rape. All the while something like 1 in 4 college women are raped or experience an attempted rape in the US. It's not difficult to see where our hearts should be. And part of why sexual assault is underreported is because legitimate pressures and social conditions that produce the sort of mental conditions that prevent women from reporting are the same social conditions that are completely forgotten when a broken person's mental instability which could lead to a false accusation is treated as completely shorn of its social significance and denounced as "crazy." And I would add that the notion that the defense and support of sexual assault victims, a profound expression of sympathy for an unbearable and horrifically common form of suffering, is somehow undertaken for social cred, is enormously offensive. -
Monadology said what I wanted to far more articulately: depression and signs of assault do not manifest always themselves directly and straightforwardly: factors like fear or confusion or who knows what else drives victims to put on a happy face and pretend like it never happened. edit: and whether or not Ludlow did it, the fact that he would stoop to this kind of tactic is proof enough that he's at least an asshole.

these weekend notifications are killing me - I can hardly focus on actual philosophy work

Possible Glass Ceiling for Applicants with MAs
Weltgeist replied to MApplicant's topic in Philosophy
That was of course my point; that there are exceptions, and that qua exceptions they aren't mythical: they happen. I wish of course that the exceptions weren't such exceptions - I share completely idol chatter's gripe: several friends of mine are utterly brilliant (certainly more so than me) but come from similar backgrounds as me and have had considerably less luck in admissions, and I have no doubt why. -
Possible Glass Ceiling for Applicants with MAs

I hope this doesn't come off as braggartly, but I'm applying to PhD programs straight out of my BA from a not at all well-known undergraduate institution (not even ranked on Leiter) with only a terminal masters, and I've had surprising (to me at least) success: wait-listed at two top-30 programs so far with assurances I have a good chance of getting into one. Granted my grades are excellent, but my GREs are only decent. I guess I just want to say that to everyone coming from a middle-of-nowhere state school undergrad background, with or without an MA, there is some hope! I came into this with the same fears and loaded myself up with safe schools and am now feeling relatively comfortable. -
fingers crossed we (and I mean: I) hear from Georgetown tomorrow!
-
in the past has Notre Dame send out all their acceptances at this point or are these just an initial cut?
-
wait-listed at Toronto! utterly ecstatic. the email says I can "reasonably expect" to be admitted. not sure how strongly to take that but i'll take it nonetheless
-
You read Fichte in an undergrad course? That's fantastic, I'm incredibly jealous.
-
Hume, Kripke, Popper,
-
no shame - choosing to forget is basically how I'm surviving right now
-
maybe I wasn't clear. what I really asked was: is it safe to assume that more Chicago admits have yet to be contacted? plus they don't do a waitlist.
-
Is it safe to assume not all the Chicago acceptances have gone out yet? Because whether it is or not, I want to.

come on Pippin, just email me already
