  1. Did you apply to NYU's MS program in Data Science though? Applied Mathematics is a VERY broad field, ranging from extremely pure math (PDE, Harmonic Analysis) to extremely applied (measure theory, probability, statistics with main focus into solving real-world problems). Statistics is a branch of applied math, but the hardest statistics class in grad school is mostly in measure theory/probability theory/mathematical statistics. So if you want to be able to understand EVERYTHING that involves the mathy part in statistics AND to develop new optimization models, go with applied math. If you just want to deal with big data without really understanding anything involving developing NEW models, having a strong statistics background is more helpful.
  2. Hey everyone, for those of you applying to Columbia's IEOR, keep your hope up! I just had an interview today with a professor, and there was a technical question that came as a surprise:) (Spoiler: drawing randomly x_1, x_2,....x_n from U(0,1), and stop right after you have x_n>x_{n+1} on the nth roll. Find expected number of rolls). Good luck to the rest.
  3. I heard that they already selected the candidates. So you might want to give up hopes:p
  4. Anyone heard from UIUC's IE PhD?
  5. Congrats man!! Did you get the fellowship as well? When would you have the interview with Columbia's IEOR? I actually think, based on the post on Results, that only 2 people in this forum got accepted for the Cornell's ORIE so far... Best of luck on Columbia!
  6. Nice man! Congrats... Which program of Umich did you apply to?
  7. Got rejected from Princeton's ORFE. Sad, but it was expected:)
  8. Hmm...do you know if that would include non-interviewed candidates as well?
  9. Anyone heard from UIUC's ISE program? Saw two people post their acceptance on Results here, but not sure if that's the truth.
  10. Haha, you should chill out...At the end of the day, I'm sure this program's acceptances come down to FIT, as do many other highly competitive programs....Your life is decided by you, not the program you are in, so just kick their ass when you get the acceptance letter.
  11. No, the same person made a decision on the track (Prof. Kulkarni). He might consult with some particular faculties you mentioned on your SOP to assess the fit, but he would be the one who makes the final call. And no word from the two until now, despite me politely asking them for more information on their background. Could you give me the link to that statistics? 4 students in INSTORE indeed mean *very few,* assume they got like 200 applicants. By the way, I think Machine Learning track would be very competitive, as that field is hot NOW and a lot of applicants would probably apply to that track if they are trend-following.
  12. Or they might be fake ones? Based on my correspondence with another professor at INSTORE (on January 24th), the committee has not met yet (he supposed). There is probably one round of admit only, as he said explicitly that they would admit very few students in this year (2-4 slots available, at most)
  13. Yeah, still not hear anything despite my email to Prof. Kulkarni letting him know I have a deadline to make for the other offer. I don't understand wth is going on, particularly when 2 students posted on the result board saying that they are accepted into this program. And he's the one who encouraged me to apply by saying that my profile is quite strong (and even gave me advice on switching from the track comp. finance to business analytics track, as that's where the two professors I am interested in working with are housed, and he said they might not accept anyone in comp. finance this year..). Which track did you choose?
  14. Wait a minute, you already received an interview from Columbia IEOR yesterday?? When would you have an interview then? And did they say how many they would interview in this year? As based on my count on the Tracker here, you would be the 5th person who got an interview. Did you update on Tracker?? It would be really helpful if you could share with me the most interesting things about your profile (from your perspective, of course) Best of luck to your interview!
  15. Hi Rick, thanks for sharing your thought, and congrats on being admitted to G. Tech's ISyE (one of a top programs in OR man!!). For G. Tech, you were probably selected by that faculty or some other faculties in order to be admitted (I knew because I wasn't selected (unofficially) due to the reason that none of the faculty members indicate *strong* interest in sponsoring me). Mind sharing a bit about your profile here? Where else did you apply besides Berkeley?
  16. @e58916 Were you the one who posted on Tracker saying that you got the offer? Big congratulations to you if that's the case!!
  17. Fair enough:) This one is better example (see Accounting vs DRO) http://www8.gsb.columbia.edu/programs/doctoral-program/admissions/application-statistics. And I am surprised to see there are more people wanting to go for PhD in Marketing or Management rather than OM.....I guess I have not experienced enough in life yet to encounter those Quant Marketers.
  18. Well, your first sentence is *not* correct. A counter-example would be at NYU Stern, where # of PhD student in Statistics is less than that of OM (1 vs 2-3), and that of IS is relatively on par with OM (2-3 for each discipline). Now, I still don't see why someone needs to get a PhD in accounting, or even management (usually strategy side...see here: http://www.stern.nyu.edu/programs-admissions/phd/admissions/admission-statistics). Your 2nd point is correct if you compare it to finance (it's the most competitive disciplines in business school, so I wonder if you have some *selection bias* when picking out Finance rather than other discipline), but I'm not sure if the 3rd point is correct. Due to the crazy growth and expansion of E-commerce companies, especially Amazon, and the biggest brick-and-mortar retailers are shifting towards E-commerce, this means those companies fundamentally would have encountered A LOT of operational management problems. Even taking something like Uber/AirBnB/etc, the skillset of a PhD student in OM is much more useful than a PhD student in Marketing/Accounting/Stats in helping those platforms achieve their *best* operational capabilities...Saying that the market can't support increase of the supply side simply ignores those companies and the current sharing-economy era we are living in (even the biggest car companies are changing their business models to meet the change in consumers' purchase/sharing behaviors )
  19. @e58916 Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! I hope your interview went great (indeed, it sounds like you would be IN. Congrats in advance!!) May you share more details about your background (education, etc.) and publications/projects? And don't feel sorry for me, as it's...OK to have another failure (it's just getting harder each time to get back up:D). I actually also applied to the DRO program in Business school, but that one is even tougher (only 3 students were selected in the previous years, out of like 90-120 applicants) @jungjalapeno Congrats on being selected for an interview. Whom did you hear from about the news that they interview everyone? (it's fine if you want to PM me about that...) And may you share with me more about your profiles, like the projects, extra things besides the education that you think made you stand out? What is your Master in btw? @yc3107 I luckily got in touch with a professor, who was very kind to let me know that I was ranked high among all applicants by the end of January (at that time, the professor said they have not finished going through all the applications...) A week later, I followed up and the professor said *I guessed you were waitlisted....but I am not supposed to provide any further info on case-by-case basis* Besides that, I don't have any other news about this program, so my apology to you.
  20. I applied to several OR programs (G. Tech, Columbia, Cornell, Princeton, UNC) as well as OM programs at biz schools (CMU Tepper, U-Wisconsin -Madison, Indiana Uni, NYU Stern, OSU Fisher, UW Foster, Columbia) So far got a fellowship at U-Wisconsin-Madison and a pending onsite *interview* at Foster(anybody went through this before, could you share your experience?) and rejections from OSU Fisher (big surprise to me), CMU Tepper (made it to the shortlist but failed to get on the 5-people interview list:p), G. Tech (unofficial), and most likely waitlisted at Columbia's IEOR (so sad...).
  21. To someone who posted the admitted status in UIUC's I.E. PhD program: could you clarify you had an interview before being admitted? And do you happen to know how many places left, or if all the offers were sent out already? Whom did you interview with btw?
  22. Sorry for confusion. It was meant for the biz school...
  23. I luckily have some leverages by being admitted to UW-Madison with fellowship ...Well, I'm not sure if you want to get [X] rejections on the same Friday, just like I did today (it's sad, as some programs you won't believe that would occur:D)....And no word on UNC INSTORE, despite my email to the director as I have some pending deadlines to make...It would be highly disappointed if Columbia's IEOR only interviews 3 students this year, as that is too low for an acceptance rate... To someone who just posted their admittance to UIUC's IE: May I know when did you actually apply there? Cause I heard from someone who got the offer by the end of December that UIUC is doing that on a rolling basis, and I only apply by January 13th (no words so far)...
  24. To anyone who got an interview with Columbia's IEOR: best of luck to you!! It is so sad that I MIGHT be waitlisted this year....A dream shattered.... Princeton's ORFE would come out by end of next week...Good luck everyone!
  25. Well, depending on the school. I saw that Cornell's ORIE already admitted some M.S students, but have not seen anyone post their results for PhD apps on the result...
