Fall 2015 Applicants!

Nope, I just happened to check the portal and it said an official decision was made! There's a link on the portal that leads to the final decision. -
Fall 2015 Applicants!
SLPosteriorCricoarytenoid replied to slpslidingaway's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Thanks for your responses to my question about the waitlist and accepting offers! It was very helpful! I just received word from my last program that I am on the waitlist there too. I am waitlisted at 3/6 places I applied to. Also, does anyone know if programs will take people off the waitlist and accept them before April 15? Or, do most programs strictly wait until after the 15th to reevaluate the waitlist and fill the empty spots? I'm guessing this is dependent on programs but I figured I would ask. I am really really really hoping I can get off the waitlists. It would be nice if I could know before I decide if I want to commit this other program...I would rather not be rude and accept the offer and then decline it if I get off the waitlists I'm on. Thanks! -

Thanks for the heads up! I noticed that there was one post on the results page for MSUM and that scared me earlier! Ah, I'm going to be scouting out the mail man tomorrow! I am no postmaster but I am guessing I should be getting something tomorrow since I only live 3 hours from MSUM. Congrats on your acceptance! I really thought MSUM seemed great when I interviewed there. -

Okay guys...This has been the most stressful spring break ever with GradCafe! I have been spending wayyyyy too much time on here over the last week scouring the boards for grad program info! GradCafe is a curse and a blessing to know about. -
Waitlisted....what are the odds?

So far both of the programs that I am waitlisted at wanted a confirmation that I wished to be placed on their waitlists. Strange, I figured it was normal! -
Waitlisted....what are the odds?

I was put on a waitlist at my favorite program the other day. In my email accepting my waitlist status, I politely asked if there was any way I could find out where I was on the waitlist. With that particular program they do not tell students where they are at on the waitlist. I don't get why it is so secretive but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Lakegirl, I am also on the waitlist at USD too. Judging by the results section, it looks like they send out a large number of waitlists. I was really surprised with the many waitlists that were posted. I didn't email them and ask about the waitlist rankings but I have been thinking about it! -

What happens if you accept an offer at one school (since there's the April 15 deadline) and then you get accepted off the waitlist at your favorite program after April 15? Can you back out after you committed to a program? Is there any kind of etiquette as far as this goes? Sorry if this seems like a silly question. By the way things have been going for me, this scenario could become a reality. I know of one program where people backed out last minute and it was too late for them to accept other students to fill the vacant spots. -
I'm kind of impartial as far as the St. Cloud area goes. I grew up in this area and I would rather be somewhere else (geographically) but I mainly like the program because of the professors. I don't really like St. Cloud but that is probably because it is not a new and exciting place for me. I did my undergraduate degree elsewhere and ended up back in the area to do more schooling to prepare for a degree in SLP. Also, SCSU is known to be a party school and I am not into the party scene. There are some rough areas as could be expected. I often times don't like walking at night from class but it isn't a major concern. The dimly lit streets are a little scary at times when you're walking alone. The downtown area can also be sketchy at night. I have been there multiple times when more times than not I have not felt safe. I am happy being a commuter and living elsewhere. Those are things unrelated to the program though. However, the SLP program is very appealing to me. I really like the professors and everything else about the program. All in all, I guess I have just never really liked the area, per se. That is my two cents so take it as you wish.

So sorry...I know how devastating it can be to get rejected. Don't give up on graduate school if this is really what you want to do. Graduate programs have too many qualified applicants applying for a limited number of spots. Don't let this discourage you from pursing your dream of becoming an SLP. Keep bettering yourself in the time you have and I'm sure graduate programs would be lucky to have you! If this were an easy path many people would choose it. Good luck on your future endeavors and don't let your graduate admissions define your worth. Keep in mind that many of the most successful people in the world are those who never took no for answer! -
This year I believe the target class size is ~10. There are normally ~15 admitted each year. They admitted 5 phase I post-baccs last year who transition into phase II in the fall. Since there are already 5 phase 1s in the cohort that leaves about 10 spots for new admits. This is what I have been told anyway.

Yes, that is true! I have been thinking about that too. I am waiting a little longer before I cross that bridge. I have more programs to hear from before I make any official decisions (I only have definitive answers from two so far). I may take that route and try to boost my resume more in the next year if I don't get in to my other programs. Otherwise, I will carefully consider UND a little more. So far I'm not too crazy about it due to the 5 courses. We will see though! -
You've been given some excellent advice so far. Like everyone has said, it is great to have a wide variety of experiences, and a few that really show who you are. I found it beneficial that I come from a different background so I was not a "cookie cutter" applicant that closely resembled many of the CSD applicants who have very similar experiences. It is your job to set yourself apart from a sea of people who are likely very similar. At my interviews I found it very easy to speak about my unique experiences and perspectives from my psychology background, which is very related to SLP. Research is definitely something to get in on, if possible. I completed quite a bit of psychology related research which was a nice topic to speak about in interviews. Many graduate programs also like to see the research experience if you are potentially interested in doing a thesis. Also, volunteering is very important! I was asked about volunteering and luckily I had some great experiences to talk about from volunteering with stroke survivors as well as at a women's shelter. Your studying abroad is going to be wonderful too. I was asked about multicultural experiences in my two interviews as well. I think you are on track to becoming a great applicant! Your teaching assistantship will also be a great part of your resume. I completed multiple TAs which I think has pulled some weight for me. Keep doing what you're doing and earning good grades! Kudos to you for planning so far in advance.

I must vent on how excruciating it is to be waitlisted at a favorite program. I feel like I am teetering on the edge of acceptance and rejection at the same time which is so nerve racking! -
Just though I'd share that the waitlist email mentioned that there were over 180 applicants this year...That's quite a bit more than they've had in past years. Of course it had to be the year that there are less spots than usual. *sigh* I will keep hoping for the best for all of us who really like SCSU. I hope we can all get closure sometime soon with what is going on here (Wow, does this sound depressing or what?!). I sound like I'm talking about a failed relationship here but it often feels like it! Haha.

I hear you...UND also wants me to take 5 more undergraduate courses while in the graduate program if I accept. I am hoping I can get in any of my other programs so I can avoid that. That is a lot of extra money to be spending on courses that aren't a necessity, per se. They are my only option at the moment. I don't know if I can justify spending thousands of dollars more to take courses that I wouldn't have to take in different programs. I'm all for learning and love it but money is the bottom line for me here... -

Take the interviews as a little victory in-and-of themselves! That means you made the short list of potential admits! That is a wonderful sign and puts you one step closer to admission. Also, waitlists are a victory too. Sounds like you still have many more to hear from, so I would still keep the optimism up! You should be a long way from desperation yet since there are plenty of decisions to be made! -
I received a waitlist from St. Cloud State today. Was anyone else notified for a waitlist here? I am really hoping I can get in by some miracle although it is probably a long shot. It would be nice to know how long the waitlist is but they don't let applicants know where they are at on it... I thought it was interesting that the email I received said they received over 180 applications in total. Definitely more than previous years.

Yes, that would be helpful! I might try to do that. I really like to get the perspectives of actual students. My favorite and most informative part of interviews have been talking to actual grad students. I feel like that's the best way to get a feel for what a program is actually like; rather than hearing the programs' perspectives on themselves (obviously going to be biased!).

2015 SLP Admissions Thread
SLPosteriorCricoarytenoid replied to bindlestiff's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Congratulations! What an awesome feeling that must be. Way to stick with it! -
I thought it might be nice to start a place where the midwestern region (MN, NE, ND, SD, IA, WI, anywhere else nearby) applicants could gather and be nervous together, ask questions, share info, etc. about programs. It seems like the other threads have a high volume of applicants from east and west coast schools, so I figured we could have a place dedicated to our region. I'll start by asking if anyone else is seriously considering University of North Dakota. I'm a little weary about the program since I would still be required to take a bunch of undergraduate courses if I accept the offer...I would also like to know if anyone has any insight on the program dynamic (good professors? Placements?). I'm also waiting to hear from Minot State. Any comments on Minot's program would be helpful too! Their website was very impressive (that voice clinic!!!).

I also can't stress enough how annoying it is that I am applying to the graduate program at my current institution. I get a lot of junk emails about sporting events and things on campus. I get trolled daily by them sending me junk emails about sports (I DON'T CARE)...Regardless, I never fail to freak out when I see my school's name in the sender area. -

Has anyone gotten an acceptance from University of South Dakota yet? I got a waitlist notification today. I noticed that the only correspondences posted in the results section were waitlists...No acceptances or rejections. I accepted my position on the waitlist although I am leaning toward attending somewhere else... ^Literally seconds after posting I see an acceptance was added.... Anyone else waiting to hear back from Minnesota State University-Moorhead? I interviewed there a few weeks ago and haven't heard a thing since then! I really liked the program and would love to know what is going on... -

I noticed that U of Nebraska Omaha sent out acceptances as well as waitlists today, according to the results section. Does it mean you're pretty much not in if you receive neither of these on the day they give them out? I'm assuming I can expect a rejection since I didn't get anything from them at all today. Strange, considering this was a safety school. Anyone have experience with situations like this???
