GRE scores?
SLPosteriorCricoarytenoid replied to Kate22192's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I am somewhat similar to yourself. I have a bachelor's in psychology and quite a few relevant experiences and leadership on my CV. I am currently completing a post-bacc year of courses. It is important to note that in our field of SLP, the verbal and writing sections are what really needs to be focused on. Many programs don't pay much attention to the quantitive section (in my experience). I am and always have been bad at math. I scored 149 on the quant section and chose to leave it at that. I was told point blank by one of my program's department heads that they don't even look at quant. I also did not score too high on verbal but I feel like the rest of my application makes up for my GRE. Application strength is really a balancing act. You could have stellar GREs and be rejected due to lack of related experiences, grades, etc. as many people find out. So if you don't score a 170, don't fret. So many programs see you as a whole person and not just a number. So far my theory is working well, as I have had two interviews (waiting to hear back on decisions from those) and one acceptance this far out of the 6 programs I applied to. As for study books, I found that the Princeton Review was pretty helpful. They have a whole list of vocab words that really came in handy for studying. I also had a Kaplan book that I really liked. I did not have the book published by the ETS, but since it is made by the makers of the GRE I'm sure it would be wonderful. -
Fall 2015 Applicants!
SLPosteriorCricoarytenoid replied to slpslidingaway's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Yep, I had the same thing happen! They have prereqs that my other programs don't require...I think there would be an extra semester added on to my plan of study if I go there. I too am keeping UND as a "backup". I also did not get offered funding. Nothing about funding was attached to the email so it's probably safe to say I didn't get any. Yeah, their program seems to be pretty good from what I've heard. They have a good medical SLP focus, which I do like. -
Fall 2015 Applicants!

Got my first acceptance today! I nearly fell off my chair. I was speechless when I got the news. It is a surreal feeling knowing I'm going to be a Speech-Language Pathologist! I can't wait to start my journey!!! Did anyone else get accepted to University of North Dakota? I am waiting to get final decisions from all of my other programs before I make any decisions. I am really excited about their program though! -
Not today, folks. I am going to hope for tomorrow now. I think they always have good intentions of getting out a fast reply, but busy schedules and such can interfere with that! Good thing I have exams to study for that keep my mind somewhat occupied. It also keeps me from lurking these forums and the results section so much. Welp, back to studying (and waiting).

Fall 2015 Applicants!

I figured I would share this because I am currently still laughing about it and it happened ten minutes ago. I logged onto an application portal (refer to above post) and saw a change in status. I was a little flustered and fell down a flight of stairs in my hurry to go downstairs and share the news. I usually try not to laugh at the expense of others but I can't help but laugh at myself. You know applications are interfering with your life when they become a hazard to your health. -

Hello all. Did anyone else apply to University of Nebraska Omaha? If so, the application portal recently changed to "An official notification will be mailed to you regarding your UNO application." This is not a drill. I REPEAT, THIS IS NOT A DRILL. Two days ago it was still under review. I would pitch a tent by the mailbox if it weren't so cold out. I just want some decisions so I'm put out of my misery. -
I would guess the calls would come during business hours. I was honestly expecting a massive blizzard. The weather folks played it up to be much worse than it was. I-94 was pretty bad I heard! There was some whiteout conditions in open areas but it was nothing comparable to that November snowstorm we had. Some people never seem to learn that even though you are an "experienced" winter driver, you can't get away with driving erratic on glare ice without expecting to meet the ditch. My poor little car had quite the trek home through the slush patches.

I do know that a SNF placement is done in Sartell (a suburb of St. Cloud). There's also a rehab placement in Golden Valley (suburb of the cities). There's more, but these are two that stick out in my mind. They also do school placements around the St. Cloud area too. I feel the need to take out anxiety on unhealthy food.

I applied to South Dakota! I haven't heard anything though. -
Hi there! Welcome to the thread of neurotic, overly obsessed SCSU applicants! GradCafe has taken another casualty I see. Anyway, I have word that the admission committee is going to review files again and make a decision very soon. Dr. Crowell is hoping to make phone calls with unofficial acceptances at the beginning of this week yet. Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday possibly. That's my interpretation of what is meant by the "beginning" of the week. Official acceptances will be sent by mail next week. Don't despair just yet! That is what I was told today! Sighhhhhhhhhh.

It looks good to have some psychology classes. In a recent grad school interview I was asked about what classes I've taken outside of CSD that would be helpful. I was able to use a lot of my psychology background for that question which I think (hopefully) impressed the interviewers. I would recommend taking behavioral psychology courses like Learning and Conditioning or Behavior Modification. They are very relevant for individuals with special needs or difficult behaviors. Much of what I learned in those courses are directly related to fluency disorder interventions as well. They really carry over nicely to many areas of SLP.

They were both very different! MSUM's interview was very brief! It was probably shorter than most job interviews I've had! The interview portion lasted maybe 30 minutes and the tour was about 10. They only asked me around 6 questions, all of which were questions that could be expected for a grad school interview. There were no real curve balls there. A grad student also took me on a tour of the facilities. It was nice! I thought their regional assistive technology center was pretty neat. I felt like the whole time I was on the interview I was comparing their program/facilities to my current institution. But over all, I did like MSUM quite a bit! They have great placements and the grad students there seem pretty happy. St. Cloud State is pretty awesome. I currently go here, but I learned quite a bit at the interview. The interviews for SCSU were about four hours long. We got a pretty good idea of the program through the interviews/opportunities to ask questions. SCSU has a very nice clinic area and very caring faculty. The grad student area with computers and tables is also very nice. The questions asked were really unexpected out-of-box type questions. I don't think there was a single one that I had prepared for. Many questions had multiple parts to them. The writing portion of the interview was okay. I am really pulling to get in at SCSU. The wide variety of experiences and faculty are what really impress me! -
I would say there was probably ~35. I'm not sure how many Skype interviews they did though. I know they did a few, at least. That's what a grad student told me anyway. There was probably between 35-40 total I would estimate. Don't quote me though. Myself and NSSLHANerd were in the same group which had 5 people in it! We had a "large" group. I agree that it was nice to be able to formulate responses while others were responding. I was interested in everyone's responses but I often found my brain racing 100mph to come up with my responses while they were talking! Yes, I also agree about the faculty. Their passion really was evident at interviews. I have/have had some of them for classes and I really enjoy learning from them as well. They're a great bunch of people. Monday, Monday....Please come sooner so we can have a little piece of mind!

I feel the same way! When we were initially in 118 with everyone at the beginning it really put things into perspective. I didn't expect quite that many. I'd heard in years past they kept it around 30. I also thought the group interview format was more anxiety provoking. It was hard to sell yourself when you're with a group of individuals who have some really great credentials. I guess the saying "ignorance is bliss" would apply here in that not knowing how great everyone is would help the nerves! My nerves were running the highest during the writing portion since it was first on the agenda for my group. I thought the prompt was pretty fair and answerable. It just took a little extra thought on what they may have been looking for. I felt myself doing a lot of erasing and reformulating sentences! I am glad to have gotten that out of the way right away. I know my tour group didn't get to see the inside of the observation room, which was unfortunate. I think that the observation room is another pretty cool component of SCSU's program. I was impressed the first time I got to go in it. Not all programs have one and it is definitely an awesome resource. My group also did not get to go in the child therapy room which was also unfortunate! The child therapy room is very neat. There's all kinds of things in it! I also enjoyed meeting everyone. It is exciting to meet like-minded people who are so passionate! I had a wonderful time at interviews and learned a lot about what makes the program really great. What a fun and stressful day!

So far I have interviewed at St. Cloud State and Moorhead State. -
Yeah, that's true! That's what the grad students told us too. Monday is likely THE day. I currently go to SCSU and I would love to stay if possible. Yep, I actually had my other interview this week too! It was a nice warm up for today's long interview process. Isn't that the worst!? I thought of so many things that I could've nailed the questions with after the interview! They definitely have tough decisions. I wouldn't want their jobs at the moment. Everyone seemed more than qualified and deserving of admission! I am going to do my best to abstain from lurking Grad Cafe in search of admission results in the near future. I don't think it will work though. Once you know about this website, there's no going back.

Fall 2015 Applicants!
SLPosteriorCricoarytenoid replied to slpslidingaway's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Yes, now I am consumed with all the things I should've said but forgot! Nothing is worse than this wait. It just gives me time to think about how I could've answered things differently. Everyone who was there definitely deserved to be there. There are some great applicants! -
Ah, that was very intense! There wasn't a single "basic" interview question! I am likely going to wait and see what happens. I feel so unconfident now as could be expected. I think the fact that it was all group interviews made me more nervous than I would have been if we had some one-on-ones. It's kind of scary to know how qualified and great the other applicants are! Haha. It is hard not to compare yourself to the others who were really great. I really enjoyed today though! I am so happy to have gotten the chance to interview! Gosh, I am so nervous waiting and analyzing everything! Oh, the joys of grad school interviews!

Okay, it's official. There is NOTHING worse than the post-interview wait period!!! -
Oh, the agony of waiting
SLPosteriorCricoarytenoid replied to ilovethecolorpurple's topic in Waiting it Out
The more I wait the more irrational my thoughts get about my applications. I have started ruminating on whether I made huge mistakes on my statement of purpose or made other embarrassing mistakes. I have zero chill. -
I made my decisions by being realistic with where I have the best shot at getting in. Bottom line for me is to get in. I don't care about the prestige of a name. After all, our profession is in high enough demand that a name is really the last thing most employers care about. I am most interested in where I can get a good education and be prepared for certification after. With that said, I applied to programs which are accredited and have a decent acceptance rate (~25-30%). I also applied to places in my region. Many programs have it in their mission statement that one of their program goals is to retain students from the region who are likely to stay in the area after graduation. I also applied to the institution I'm a post-bacc at since many of the faculty already know me and wrote my letters of recommendation. It really depends on what is important to you though!

I noticed that you're applying to University of North Dakota (me too!). I know that they usually accept a good number of Canadian students. As for other places, I don't know.
