  3. You have a better chance than I did and I got into a pretty strong program. Just keep doing what you're doing, do well on the GRE, and talk to some professors so you can ask them for a LOR later on.
  4. Not really. They usually go to Stanford, Berkeley, San Jose, or Cal Poly.
  5. Thanks for the reply. I've spent the last two years taking all the extra Math/CS courses and I will only have 1 or 2 left which I will finish in my first quarter/semester at either school. I'll finish either program in exactly 2 years. I'm sure SFSU has decent recruiting just based on it's location. Cal Poly gets recruiting from the bigger companies like Apple, Microsoft, etc.
  6. No, my bachelors is in a non-technical major from a UC
  7. I got into both of these programs and I'm torn between which one to choose. Please help! Cal Poly: Pros: Great name for CS Hands on program Easy to get internships and job offers after graduating San Luis Obispo is a great city to live in Cons: Classes are highly impacted/Will be hard to graduate on time Not as well known for their grad program Don't offer many classes for their grad program Will have to pay for rent/food/living expenses San Francisco State: Pros: I will save money by living at home Easy to get classes/Will graduate on time Will be near all the tech companies and startups in SF/Silicon Valley Cons: Not well known for their CS program Hour commute each way
  8. How are all your schools on Spring Break already? It's not even Spring! None of my schools go on break until a few weeks.
  9. Anyone else get a request from a school they are applying to to send a final transcript after their grades of the current semester have posted? I thought they only asked for this once you're accepted. Why are they asking for it now?!?
  10. I feel like they would just give me the generic "its part of the application process for everybody" like they do with every question. Just thought someone else might be in the same boat.

  12. In the student center of the college I'm applying to the To-Do list used to be to submit the transcripts of all the schools I've attended. Today I noticed those were all removed and what showed up was a request for the final transcript from my current university when the current term ends. I'm wondering if this means anything. I won't receive my grades for this quarter until early April. Does that mean they won't make a decision until the current quarter is over? This is from my top choice so I'm trying to not get my hopes up.
  13. I would stay away from mentioning your poor gpa on your SOP. Keep it positive. They would much rather hear about why you want to go to grad school and what you plan on doing afterwards. You might already know this but focus more on your Quant score on the GRE. Most schools could care less about the verbal as long as it isn't horrible. It depends on the school whether or not they have a hard cut off at 3.0. I would apply anyways. Good luck.
  14. I'm not familiar with those subjects but you should visit individual school websites to see what they're looking for. You could also look at the faculty and see if any professor's specialize in those subjects and e-mail them. If a professor is interested in you that greatly increases your chances.
  15. I want to get my masters in CS but mostly for purposes of working in the industry. I've heard UC's are mostly about theory and good for research where CSU's are more hands on and prepare you better for the industry. However, UC's generally look better on applications. Anyone have input on this?
  16. If you could get solid recommendation letters I don't see why you shouldn't apply to some 10-30 schools. GRE might be a little low for top 10 but you never know.
  17. Sorry if this has been asked before. I asked 3 professors to write me a LoR and they all agreed. However, I have no idea what the next step is. They all told me to email them as a reminder and to include all the info of where and how to send them. One of the professors mentioned a website that they can upload and send to the universities I'm applying to. Can someone please give me a simple explanation of how I'm about to go about this? Thank you.
  18. I'd like to know this as well.
  19. Kaplan MST 2: Q153 - V146 (Apr 13 before studying) ETS Paper 1: Q158 (Apr 16) Kaplan MST 3: Q158 (Apr 23) Kaplan MST 4: Q156 (May 9) ETS Paper 2: Q163 (Jun 28) Manhattan 1: Q160 (Jun 29) Kaplan MST 5: Q160 (Jul 6) Manhattan 2: Q157 - V151 (Jul 13) Manhattan 3: Q158 - V152 (Jul 19) Manhattan 4: Q159 - V152 (Jul 23) Manhattan 5: Q156 - V146 (Jul 27) Kaplan MST 1: Q164 - V143 (Aug 10) PowerPrep 2: Q163 - V149 (Aug 17) Actual GRE: Q161 - V151 (Aug 20) I'm applying to CS schools so I will probably take it again to try and improve my Quant. I'm not applying to any top 20 so if I don't improve I think it'll be fine.
  20. Good news: After my calc2 midterm, my professor approached me and told me I received the highest grade in the class. After talking for a bit, I told him my background and he said once I take discrete math and linear algebra I could possibly be his one of his assistants in the Fall for a data mining and AI project. I'm wondering if I should hold off applying (Until Fall 2015) so I will have finished my upper div prereqs and have solid LoRs. This would mean I would have to figure out what to do for an entire year in between. Also, I read on a forum that an MSCS from a California State School isn't taken seriously by employers. I'm applying to some UC's, but because of my low GPA, my backups are SF State, SJ State, and CSUEB. Would it be a waste of time to get my masters at one of these universities?
  21. I've been looking into this and it seems like most research programs want either a) someone who does not have their Bachelors degree yet or b ) someone who is currently enrolled in a Masters or PhD program. Is there a website or does anyone have any suggestions on where I could find a program to apply to?
  22. Thanks for the feedback! Most schools I've looked at will accept you conditionally if you only have a few more prerequisite courses. Unfortunately, I don't have any CS work experience. I'm planning to get an internship for Summer 2015 but obviously I will have applied by then. Also I have to see how I score when I take the GRE since that holds a lot of weight. I've just spent a lot of time over the last year taking and doing well in these lower div CS courses and I'm hoping its not all for nothing.
