  1. Either way, mommy gets the first call.
  2. I agree, send them the unofficial PDF copy until they get the real one.
  3. I, too, am in the central time zone.
  4. I know they notified some people from the social sciences in early December even though they were saying January 15. It might vary by department, though.
  5. I'm pretty sure he cannot edit it, but you can delete it and he can re-submit a new one.
  6. I was wondering whether other History applicants have had problems with the GRE quantitative section? I scored over 700 on the verbal, and 5.5 on the AW, but 500 on the quantitative. My professors tell me that math is completely irrelevant for History ad coms, but I'm applying to the top programs so I keep worrying about this. Thoughts?
  7. I would definitely recommend against doing so. I know all of my recommendation providers very well, and have had multiple classes with each one of them, so I completely trust them and don't have any doubts about the quality of their recommendations. Don't be so cynical -- professors that know you well have no reason to write poor LORs.
  8. I'm coming from a top basketball school, which was an amazing experience, especially since we won the national championship a couple of years ago, but now I'm off to more "academic" school (I hope).
  9. I'm also concerned with my GRE, and I think that is by far the weakest component of my application. Specifically, I'm worried that my quantitative score is too low even for History programs. Of course, I'm probably just overthinking all this because of the whole waiting process.
  10. By part ways I meant break up. We already did the long distance thing for a year when I was finishing up undergrad.
  11. Well, did you contact the department to tell them that you're sending your materials on the last day? Some programs have a note on their website which asks applicants to let them know if for some reason you are forced to wait til the last minute to submit the application. I would definitely suggest contacting the department on Monday morning.
  12. Any one else applying to Russian studies programs?
  13. My SO and I are still very young (early 20s), and we're both very ambitious when it comes to education. So, we're hoping to get into the same school or schools in the same city, but if that doesn't work out we know that we're going to part ways and go to the best programs that we're accepted to.
  14. ^ that's funny.
  15. Probably Penn, because I've met with two professors from there and they were extremely pleasant and told me that I'd be a good fit with their research work. Of course, like the poster below, I'm genuinely interested in hearing from all of the schools and making a decision in March or April based on some good options. We'll see what happens.
  16. I'm not really expecting to hear anything before February, but it sure would be nice.

How old is everyone going to be at the start of your programs? I'll be 24.
  18. Does anyone have any experience with Oxford or Cambridge providing funding for Master's programs? In their acceptance letter Oxford said that they'll "likely" be able to provide some funding, but it sounds very ambiguous and uncertain. I want to wait a few weeks before emailing them about it, but wanted to see if anyone has personal experience with this. I've heard that Oxford and Cambridge are notorious for accepting Americans without giving them any funding.
  19. wow, you're right, it was sitting in my junk box this whole time.
  20. Very few history programs require interviews. Relax.
  21. I never even thought about it until I just saw your post, and I just checked my email and I also never received a confirmation email -- and I submitted my application on Nov. 21! But I'm really not that worried. I emailed them, so we'll see what they say on January 4th or 5th.
  22. truly revolutionary!
  23. I completely agree with LateAntique. Even with those professors whom I've known for the past five years and whose homes I've been to on multiple occasions I always refer to by Dr. [Last name]. That is the proper etiquette in academia, I believe, and my parents, both of whom are professors, also think so. It doesn't matter that they sign their emails with their first name, I always respond with Dr. ... in order to maintain professionalism and show respect. I will likely continue to refer to my undergrad professors as Dr. something even after I have my PhD!
  24. My advisors recommended to use an ellipsis because it's succinct -- there is no need to add more words, notes, comments, to something that is already long and wordy.
  25. I'd definitely suggest renting it out. Maybe to friends or someone you trust and people who are not going to call you up every other night at 3 am because of some little problem here and there.
