  1. Congratulations!  It seems like babies always show up when you are going on to another level.   :) As far as starting school goes, that will be a difficult decision.  Many newborns sleep a good 16 or so hours a day which means you will have more study time when the baby is less mobile.  That is if your baby is a good sleeper and one can never be sure until the baby is here.  On the other hand if you wait until the baby is older (defer a year) you will now have a mobile little one who (gets into everything) and baby could have an unpredictable sleeping pattern.  Its hard to say.  Personally I like studying and getting major things school related done around child's sleeping schedule so I would say start while the baby is young.  But if your program starts and your baby will be only two months old you will still be adjusting to baby's sleep/wake cycle and starting a rigorous program may be a bit much especially post pardom.

I'm not sure if you mentioned if this was your first baby or not.  I originally started to seriously applying to graduate programs  five years ago while I was pregnant with my third child.  Eventually, I decided that it would be best if I waited because my other children were still young and trying to work out a sitter and feeding was too much for me to figure out.  (Neither of my boys would take a bottle, so that meant I needed to be around so that I could feed them.)  Well it worked out that five years later I am now in graduate school my children are older so the dynamic is a bit different.  Of course I don't mean that you need to wait that long.  I was just wondering if you could gauge from previous babies how long it took you to get back into the swing of things after delivery etc.

If you do decide that you are going to go for it you will need a good support system, a sitter, a moby wrap and a feeding schedule with bottles if you plan to bottle feed.  Don't be so hard on yourself and don't be alarmed if you find yourself crying a lot more than normal.  The hormonal imbalance post baby takes a while to level off.  I don't think I'm helping much so I'm going to end this post.  I can only offer that you can do it.  It won't be a cake walk but it can be done.  Best of luck whatever you decide.   :)

  2. Currently in grad school with three kids ages 10,7,& 5. It's not a cake walk but do able. I imagine you will need to study around the nap schedule of the baby. Consider baby wearing. Look into a mobile wrap. They are wonderful. You will need a sitter if your husband isn't watching the child. Start looking now reliable childcare is half the battle. Plan out everything for your semester ahead of time and work the plan. Congrats and enjoy your new little one.

That should say moby wrap sorry.  They are fantastic.  I was able to get things done and baby was happy.

  4. I'm a big fan of this also. I print my weekly schedule out and put it in a binder, and fill in the spaces between classes and teaching with what I would like to accomplish. If I feel I don't do enough of those things during the week, I'll come in on the weekend, but if I get everything done, I reward myself. It's a balancing act because I always (always!) feel like I could be doing more! Especially since once I'm home, I don't get much done.

I like this idea of printing your weekly schedule out and keeping it in your binder.  I have front load everything in my syllabus into todoist.com and write down in my planner.  That worked well last semester.  This semester although I am keeping up with the material it feels as If I am not as ahead as I would like.  (difficult to explain)  Perhaps keeping a weekly goal list somewhere I can see it other that my phone would be helpful.

  5. I'm feeling much less motivated this semester than last one ... I used to spend almost every night in the library until at least 7pm, usually 9 or 10, and bring dinner with me, but now I just want to go home and cook and watch Netflix. I'm taking the same course load as last semester rather than increasing it like a lot of other first years in my program, and since I've acclimated, it feels really easy to get my work done this term with less effort than last semester. I feel lame for not amping it up and working even harder, like I'm half-assing it, but this is the last semester before I have to teach and study for orals exams as well, so I want to enjoy some free time while I can, especially since I'm dating someone now and wasn't for most of last semester. How do you get over the guilt of feeling like you're just breezing through when you should be pushing yourself harder and stressing more?

This semester feels different for me as well though I can't quite describe it.  If your grades aren't suffering then I wouldn't sweat the change.  Some semesters are easier than others.  My second year will be a lot different than this year I am applying for GAT positions which will mean I will teach six hours and i will be seeing clients so I'm not rushing into the deep end.  No I will get there soon enough.

  6. My hubby was somewhat hands on.  He helped me talk through my decision if I was ready to go back to school with three children etc.  As far as picking the schools.  I picked the universities that offered my degree within a certain mile radius from my home.  Relocating for me to attend graduate school is not an option for us at this time.

He's be very supportive and encouraging throughout the process.

  7. I just wanted to say that this is a really cool thread.  I'm a 30something and have been wondering if it'll be awkward to one day be in a PhD program with mostly younger students.  It's interesting reading about all the challenges and positives some of you are experiencing.

You may feel strange but I'm learning its all in your mind.  It can be a positive or a negative thing, its just your perspective.

  8. Just thought I'd check in. The semester has been pretty chill so far.

I'm seeing clients in practicum. That's pretty exciting, actually. Hopefully I don't fuck up too massively there.

Otherwise, actual classes are kind of slow and not too exciting. I'll be able to get a jump start on my thesis though, so that's fun! My adviser got a copy of nVivo to assist her with data analysis and I'll probably be able to use it with my thesis as well. That's fun.

Okay. I gotta go do TA shinangians now. :)

Awesome I have pre-practicum this summer then  practicum in the fall where I will work with live bodies. Excited and nervous at the same time. I need to pick a theory from which I'm working from.  I've narrowed it down but still haven't decided.  Good luck.

  9. So tonight is the class where my last professor did not show up. We are currently getting some snow from Juno and it is supposed to intensify tonight. I really hope class isn't cancelled :( We have to meet our new professor and get a syllabus and everything. Today is also the last day for add/drop and I really don't want to have to drop this class and find a new one so late into the semester. I am nervous.

Let us know what you decide.  Perhaps the professors will send out assignments via email.  That may ease your doubts a bit.

  10. I have the bad luck to be catching a cold, developing a yeast infection, and suffering through a two-week heavy menstrual period right before classes start today. I feel absolutely awful physically, and I'm starting to stress about being at a zombielike level of functionality for the first week of classes. I hope that I can handle this. Thank goodness I only have one seminar and daily language classes this week.

I hope your week went well despite you not feeling well.

  11. I have only taken one online class, and my experience is that they tend to take up way more of your time than you would expect. This is especially true if you are expected to have some sort of online dialog with the other class members. It seems like you are always checking in, to see if there is something that you need to comment on.

That being said, the class that I took online was one of the more interesting ones, and had a great instructor.

Yes, I've noticed that.  This particular class has a discussion prompt that is posted regularly and you have to respond to the prompt as well as to your classmates.  The class is assessments, so I'm not sure how interesting the subject matter will be but we shall see.

  12. Well I manage to pull a 4.0 my first semester of my PhD program -- I definitely checked my grade multiple times to make sure that wasn't a mistake.

This semester I don't seem to have any "big" papers but just tons and tons of reading. I'm also taking a class outside of my department in the Education Policy school and frankly it seems far less rigorous that what I am used to in my department so I will have to make sure to push myself.

Way to go on your gpa.  I think I have one big paper this semester and several small papers.  I think the biggest adjustment for me this semester will be my online class.  I have never taken an online class.  There are about five classes for my degree plan that can be taken online.  This semester I chose to take one and I am attending the university for my other class.  I feel out of my element with the online class.  It feels very loosely defined, is the best way to describe it.  I have to get in the groove before I give my final opinion about online classes.

  13. First class of the second semester is tonight. 6-9 pm, plus an hour drive back home, then some unwind time = bed @ 11pm.

Up again tomorrow @ 4:30, leave for work,  then class from 6-9, drive home ... repeat

it looks like I will really be dragging my a$$ on Thursdays this semester, why did I schedule 2 late nights back to back?

Sounds like a hectic schedule. Good luck.

  14. They scrambled and got two adjuncts to co-teach the class. I have no idea what it is going to look like...I am wondering if I should drop it and pick up another class this semester instead. It is really weird and I feel like this class is going to be an issue :( . I feel really good about my Intro to Quantitative Methods. I am wondering if it is because I am so much more focused on my schooling this semester than last.

Go with your gut. Do you think the adjuncts have a good grasp of the material. Its really hard to say. I am currently enrolled in a class where the professor got pretty bad reviews. Initially, I wanted to wait and see if it was offered by another professor but later on however, this semester was the best semester to get it out of the way. So I'm taking the class and hoping for the best. I'm excited about the class and I'm hoping that when the end of semester evaluations went out last year the professor got some pointers on areas that need improvement. Best of luck which ever route you choose.
