  1. I could not figure out how to post gifs on here earlier, but if I figure it out... This is my gif of choice for the news:

And this is how I felt when I had finally accepted the 2 week wait until our notification, but learned it was moved up to THIS FRIDAY!!

HA! These are all of my emotions right now! Love it!

  2. I second this news, my Fulbright advisor has just emailed me the news about the date being pushed up to this Friday as well!!

    OoOoOoooh... I feel sick! :o

AHH! So we have confirmation!! Don't be sick, this is good news! It will lessen our panic/anxiety/stress by 2 weeks!
  3. Hey guys! This is my first time posting, but I just got word from my advisor that first round notifications will be coming out THIS FRIDAY (Jan. 16th)! He even forwarded the official statement from Fulbright and IIE. Looks like the wait is almost over!!

    newsletter_header.gif NSC Result Notification

    Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that IIE will be informing students of the outcome of the first stage of Fulbright U.S. Student Competition this week.

Emails will be sent to all applicants notifying them of their application status by the end of the day on Friday, January 16, 2015

Yikes! Just when I was starting to feel very zen about waiting the next 2 weeks, I read your post. How incredible would it be if we found out whether or not we are finalists in only two days?

Also, thank you so much for sharing nic93!

  4. I was wondering the same thing !

    2014:  Tuesday, January 28th

    2013: Friday, January 18th

    2012: Thursday, January 19th

    2011: Thursday, January 20th

2010: Friday, January 29th (Apparently they had issues that year with the Embark system going down)

    2009: Friday, January 30th

    Hooray! I'm not alone!

Thanks for compiling these dates! It definitely helps to see them listed.

  5. So this is how pathetic I am...

According to the 2013-2014 Fulbright forum, applicants received their first notifications on Friday, January 18th. Maybe last year Fulbright was really behind and this year we will find out sooner than expected!

  6. I think last year it was not done until after our cycle ended. Also, keep in mind grant numbers change. Last year, there were two grants available for my program, but when it was updated, it changed to only one. So the stats for last year may not be accurate for this year.

Ugh.  I hope the grant numbers don't change! ...unless it's in our favor, of course.

  7. Does anyone else find/read blogs of past Fulbrighters?  Or am I the only one who reads them longingly and hopes it will be my turn to write one soon!  :P

Yes!! I do this often.  I am trying to find anything constructive to do to pass the time when I'm feeling most anxious.

Also, sorry if this was asked already, but does anyone who applied last year remember when the statistics were updated on the Fulbright website for the number of applicants to each country?

  8. Hello! New to the board. =) Applied for Korea ETA.

I knew about Gradcafe, but didn't think there would be a Fulbright forum. Woot!

I am both so ready and scared to hear if I'm a finalist on the 30th! I read somewhere on the forum that people have already dreamed about getting in. Haha, I had a nightmare a few months back that I forgot to send additional information and realized it too late. Woke up with the sweats, emailing my Fulbright advisor in fear. He calmed me down, per usual haha.

I graduated in December, so I'm currently growing unbearably anxious because I have NO clue what my future holds. I can't even think of a realistic plan B... I'm so scared! I REALLY want this wonderful opportunity, and I'm trying not to overthink, but it's hard!

Glad I can talk to you guys, my family doesn't know I applied yet so it's nice to talk to people in similar situations and who are supportive. I know my friends are sick of hearing about it, lol!

Welcome to the board! I am becoming increasingly anxious as well.  I actually wish that everyone in my life didn't know that I applied for the Fulbright - because even though I am constantly thinking about it, somehow it is even worse to answer the same questions about it over and over again.  Also, it will make rejection all the more difficult.

Best of luck to you! It is definitely hard to live in limbo and have your future in someone else's hands.  But no matter the outcome, I know we will all be better for having gone through the application process.

  9. It's almost here, y'all!!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope that all of our hopes for the Fulbright are fulfilled! I really cannot believe that January is already here, what I thought would be the longest wait of my life has really flown by...although we still have this last month to get through.

  10. To anyone who re-applied this year: Do you think there was less or more competition? It seems like the spreadsheet is smaller and the discussion on here much more subdued than last year, not that this is necessarily an indication of the overall amount of applications.

I was thinking the same thing!

  11. So my university had the largest pool of Fulbright applicants ever this year, it was double the average number of applicants.  Was this the same for anyone else's university?  I feel that our forum is actually kind of small.  Maybe most applicants don't seek out a forum/moral support until the finalists are announced in January?

  12. I have officially submitted my application for research in Moldova! I thought I would feel relieved, but now I'm more nervous than ever! I hope I can get over my anxiety sometime in the next three months...haha.

  13. Hi everyone! I had a very successful campus interview today for a research grant to Moldova.  For anyone who has an on-campus interview coming up, don't be nervous! It was extremely helpful and the interview panel is positive and only wants the best for your application.  I actually left feeling more confident about my application than I did going into the interview.  My campus deadline for the final application is October 12th, I just can't believe that this part of the process is almost over.  The best of luck to everyone interviewing soon and good luck with all of your final applications over the next two weeks!!

  14. Got it!  I'm still just confused on the first number, though.  For example, in your case, does that mean only 7 people in the whole country applied for Moldova?  Or only 7 people made it through the first round of cuts?

I've been reading your blog BTW and it looks awesome!  I hope you have an amazing experience :)

Hi! Sorry to jump in.  Yes, as far as I am aware, that number indicates the number of total applicants.  So only 7 people in the entire United States applied to Moldova for the ETA position.  I also think it is really surprising that so few people applied for the position in Italy, seeing as the UK and other western European countries always have a ridiculously high number of applicants.

  15. I just saw your post. I am actually from Moldova so if you need any info about the country just write or pm me! :)

Thank you so much for your offer!! I will be sure to PM you with all of my burning questions! :)

  16. Hey!!! I am in ETA starting my position in Moldova now! If you have any specific questions or are curious about anything just let me know! I'm also keeping a blog if you wanna snoop on some pics, haha (like is in my signature). When I was in the application process other's blogs motivated me a lot and kept me focused. Here are some other Moldova blogs:

    Good luck!

Sine! Congratulations and best of luck to you!! I am looking forward to following your blog, hopefully it will keep me distracted during the long waiting period after applications are due! I just returned from a language program in Romania and while Romania was beautiful, I kept hearing about how much MORE beautiful and enjoyable Moldova is! I am sure you are going to have an incredible experience.  Thank you very much for reaching out and providing the links to the additional Moldova blogs. :)

  17. No one will forbid you from traveling to certain areas, even dangerous ones, independently as a tourist. This changes once you're affiliated with Fulbright, though. I did my Fulbright in Colombia and we had a lot of restrictions placed on us regarding travel. Basically, Fulbright placed most of the same restrictions on us as the government places on embassy employees. It was a huge drag because we had to have all of our itineraries pre-approved by the security attaché at the embassy, couldn't travel between cities by bus, etc. There were also giant areas of the country that were just no-go zones. This is something to keep in mind when planning a research proposal. If you're project requires field work in an area that the state department considers dangerous then Fulbright probably won't fund you because you'd be a liability to the program.

LKS - That is great advice! I am applying to a country that contains a highly-contested region, so this will be something to keep in mind as I write my proposal. Thank you!

  18. Hi everyone!

I am excited to see so many others anxiously awaiting the start of application season and very glad that we will get to share all of the joys and stresses of this process together!  I will be applying for a research position in the student program in Moldova.  Hope that I'll get to meet another Moldova applicant or anyone else hoping to head to Eurasia :)
