  1. If you're in the northeast, ETS hires graduate students to grade general GRE essays. In addition, my roommate is an SAT and GRE instructor + tutor at the Princeton Review. It's a decent hourly rate and not a lot of work. Consider tutoring with a company or on your own. You can advertise around your school or register on a website like wyzant.com. The more clients you get, the more you can charge per hour. PS - I'd advise against mturk. On average people make about $5 an hour filling out surveys full time. There are way better options that you have as a grad student.
  2. I've got myself a good ol' Jansport. Ever since being accepted to grad school I've thrown out 90% of my corporate-happy clothing and started re-buying the stuff I used to wear in undergrad. Wayyyyy more comfortable.
  3. I'm not too knowledgeable about asking for extensions, but for now I would call up UCSD and put as much effort as necessary to find out the status of your application. Tell them you received another offer but you would prefer to attend UCSD but you will not forfeit another offer of admission for that chance. Good luck.
  4. Heya! I'm an incoming grad student at Fordham (but in psych, haha). If any incoming students want to consider looking for housing together, that would be great. Either way, best of luck in your program! Perhaps we'll see each other around some time.
  5. Congratulations!! What are you planning to do for housing? I've been scoping out the area around the Bronx Campus and 3-4 bedroom apartments are dirt cheap. We could even afford to eat out sometimes on the graduate assistant stipend, haha!
  6. Heya! My girlfriend and I just got offers for admission to Fordham University, which we're super happy to accept. We'll be pursuing our PhDs in Applied Developmental Psychology. Right now we live in Queens, but we're looking to move to the immediate area around the Bronx campus. I'd love to meet other incoming students in and outside our area of study. Congrats to all of you who got in!
  7. I asked out the girl I've been interested in since app season started and she said yes. So hopefully I'll be kept busy for the next few weeks until I hear back from my #1 program.
  8. oh god. me too. i rewarded myself post app-season with a gym membership.
  9. I have bouts of anxiety and worry, especially since it's been two weeks post-interview for my first choice. Aside from that, I'm busy at my day job and I spend my evenings catching up with old friends that I lost contact with during application season, haha!!
  10. From what I've seen, most schools send out their first round of acceptances at the same time. However, most keep a waiting list because at least a few of those choose to attend school elsewhere. When those people reply, they will turn to their wait list in an attempt to fill that year's cohort. Don't worry too much about that.
  11. Since this is my second year applying for phd programs, I think I'm actually regretting not applying to less programs. I had a much clearer idea of what my interests and target schools were, the rest I applied at the absolute insistence of my mentor who said I'd be screwing myself over if I applied to only a few schools. Haven't heard anything from those schools I added to my list for that reason, only from the ones I had a genuine interest in.
