That's assuming he's not a music major. Bad puns aside, we all have deadlines. I've got three programs I'm still waiting on, and I have to get a decision in asap. This kind of stress could have been avoided if my top choice would have accepted me straight out. It's all their fault! =)
-
Yeah. I had to pester program assistants to find out I was on a couple of waitlists.
-
Especially on Halloween! =)

Often private universities in the U.S. have more money to throw around, if that's a concern.
-
Wowow! I thought I had it bad with all of my international apps, but I'm only waiting on a couple more schools. What field are you in? The apps are for a master's degree, I hope.

The rest of the Midwest apologizes for Detroit. Please don't hold it against us.
-
That's because they were bused to Texas for their "schooling."

I have three things to say in response: Number one: Pooh on you! Number two: The author of your book is on crack if he thinks Kentucky is even possibly a Midwestern state. What's next? Oklahoma? Number three: For those who disagree with number two, please refer to number one (which, ironically refers to "number two").

Kentucky is not the Midwest. Ohio barely is (I consider it "Out East," myself). But, yes, Indiana is pretty flat. I guess it's different in the upper MW; we have some nice snowboard parks and plenty of small mountains. Nebraska, on the other hand, fits your description just fine.

Wow! What a stupid situation to put you in. Luckily it worked out in the end. Sheesh!

April 15 is today and I am still waiting on schools
Minnesotan replied to firecolon's topic in 2008 Archive
That's disgraceful. Why would you accept multiple offers, thereby @#$%ing over not only the departments involved, but also the students on their waitlist? This is the kind of action a program director would remember to tell his colleagues about. -
Is is possible that I will decline the offer after April 15?
Minnesotan replied to sakbaljjang's topic in 2008 Archive
According to the CGS agreement, for any school to admit you if a) you've accepted an offer from another CGS school, and it is past April 15th, they will need a written release from the school you originally accepted. Whether any of these CGS signatories follow their own rules is a matter for debate. I've heard countless examples again this year of grad schools attempting to circumvent their own (voluntary) agreement. Of course, if you try to do the same shady business as they do, you'll be gutted and spitted, but that's another story entirely. Although it is unethical, it could really make a difference in your life where you choose to go to grad school. I guess it's your call which is more important, moral principles or practical benefit. -
I hope he was just trying to lighten the mood. If not, that ha got to be among the most pompous things I've heard in the last couple weeks (which seems a very long time in academia, when marking the calendar by the amount of pompous things said).

Turning down offers?
Minnesotan replied to commoner's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Heh... trying to get an extension so you can see what's happening with your waitlists is not an easy sell, either. I think I might blow a fuse if I don't accept an offer soon. The mid-April application situation feels like a massive game of randomly placed musical chairs being held in the spacious gymnasium of a school for the blind! -

This is why I stopped including risque pictures in my application packets. -
Atmosphere among current grad students
Minnesotan replied to InquiringMind's topic in Officially Grads
I only applied to programs with lots of "big drinkers." =) -
Chug, chug, chug goes the degree engine, spitting out conformograds!

Not a problem. I wasn't trying to chastise you, only to keep the "Which program do I choose?" threads clearly marked and separated from the small minority of other topics people start around this time of year. While the former are important, there are also a gajillion of them, and it's nice to be able to avoid them if you want to skip to other topics for a while.
-
I'd drop a dime and make sure they know your acceptance is on its way. I'm sure they'd be happy to hear from you.
-
You've obviously never been to the Midwest.
-
***Moderator note: I edited the misleading title of this thread. Please try to label new topics clearly.
-
That's less funny because it's true. =(

Under review, will know by 4/15-What does this mean?
Minnesotan replied to Jean's topic in Waiting it Out
I think it means their committee is slow. If they haven't reviewed your application yet, you're not on a waitlist. -
I suppose I could be biased. You see, everyone in Minnesota knows someone who went to York or Western, but few could even tell you which province houses McGill. I'm not saying that McGill is a bad school (oh, the self-important snobs there would have a heart attack if I dared!), or that York or Western are in any way better schools. I'm just talking about familiarity. All I know is that, in my experience, the name recognition of McGill is very low outside of the academy. It is not a brand name, by any means. In fact there's about 1.5 Canadian schools that are brand names in America (UofT, with UBC being the 0.5). If you want to teach in Canada, McGill is an excellent choice.

Why does it seem to bother you that your potential adviser is white?
