Yes. Then again, telemarketers are just as likely. The thing is, most professors leave a polite, yet uninformative, message when they call.
-
durandel, it varies widely and by program. Some send out acceptances via email and rejections via post. Some use the website only. Sometimes excited professors ring their star candidates when news is available. It's a mixed bag of cats, as they say. The one thing you do know is that most of the programs whose schools are part of the notification agreement will inform their non-waitlisted acceptances before March 16. This gives people a month to accept or decline offers.

Post here to whine about rejections

Sorry to hear that, grifter. How did you hear? Is there a website to check, or anything like that? It seems rejections have started trickling in from the Dub. -
Ouch, ouch. Why all the rejections on Valentine's Day? Sorry to hear it, amanda. Oh, well. I've still got a bunch left to hear from. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Damn! Everyone's getting rejected today. What a crap idea, to notify us on Valentine's Day! -
Whether you agree with his tone or not, Rising is right about the GRE discussion needing to be moved. There's already a debate in both "Applications" and "Waiting It Out," if you want to continue those. Let's try to keep all of this somewhat related to history admissions. It's getting very hard to recognize as a thread for that topic.

Sure they do. I got rejected at my top choice program today. Happy friggin v-day!

Plan B: What to do when rejected EVERYWHERE?

Time to head over to Cougar Night at the local meat market. Find yourself a sugar momma. -
Ermm... neither modern nor Latin (and only partially American). Let the chanting begin!
-
Ooh! That sounds like yet one more way to ignore my thesis work. Maybe I'll buy a new one.
-
But, if I'm not mistaken, a school's taking part in the agreement is purely voluntary.
-
Maybe if we hold hands and chant, we'll both get acceptance letters with wonderful fellowship offers. *sigh* I'm willing to try anything. I felt nauseated when I didn't see a thick envelope in the mailbox this afternoon. I think my SO is ready to kill me, and she just might if I interrupt valentine's day to obsessively check the notification sites over and again.

I sold that S.O.B. the very next day, when I was done with my required "lib. eds." in math.
-
I feel your pain, even though I have nothing helpful to add.

I can't speak intelligently about Germany, but Canada and the U.K. are ridiculously bogged down in bureaucracy. Even the U.S. Postal Service is easier to deal with than their systems, if that can be believed!

The Official "Make Everyone Else Jealous" Thread

Congrats, pickle. I'm happy for you (and envious - I still haven't heard anything from anywhere). -
Isn't a fellowship award indicative of an acceptance?
-
Ermm... sorry for the confusion - I was just reporting that the person who was admitted said it came via snail mail. I don't know anything about my own situation yet. Thanks, though! =)
-
It came via snail mail, which is inconvenient for those of us who are out of country for the moment.

Bob Marley has been keeping me sane, lately. "No worry about a thing. Every little thing gonna be alright!"
-
Please only post your questions once. I've left your duplicate post up in the "Applications" forum. This one is locked.

They carry calculators, by Jove! That, in itself, is a bit unsettling to a student of the humanities.

No problem. I'm as obsessive, cynical, and pessimistic about this process as anyone, at times (just ask my significant other), but when I'm really worried about it I try to take a step back and remember what happened to me last time I applied to grad schools. Moreover, many of my friends went through the same type of thing, so I honestly don't think my situation is unique; the selection process can seem very arbitrary at times. This realization, however, is as comforting as it is frustrating for those of us who still have not gotten an acceptance.
