  1. Yeah, that's anxiety inducing. Considering you got in at UNC, I don't doubt the high likelihood you'd be one of those top candidates that get funding!
  2. It's awesome that you're considerate of what the program wants, but you need to look out for your best interests. If the program you're waiting on is worth it, I would hold off on deciding until they get back to you. Good luck!
  3. I don't think history admissions affects you guys at EALC. Wouldn't funding be separate? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, maybe we will be classmates in the future!
  4. About 20
  5. Thought I should mention--I'm heading to UCSB's recruitment weekend tomorrow, and admits were sent a list of all the people admitted to the program and who will be attending this weekend. Unless you're on the wait list, I think it's safe to assume it's a rejection (not sure if UCSB even has a wait list and, if they do, not sure if wait-listers are notified).
  6. Congrats on Maryland, PD33!!
  7. I'm wait listed for funding at UCSB. I think it's pretty common at programs with tight budgets.
  8. I was discussing this problem with one of my MA professors because I don't want to "string" any programs along or hold up the wait lists. My prof urged me not to pull the plug on any pending applications or acceptances until I have funding information and know I would not attend the programs. Without funding information, making the decision to withdraw an application or decline an acceptance isn't the best idea.
  9. Congrats on the wait lists guys! Hopefully you move off of it soon.
  10. Hey, that means you made the first cut! That's great news!
  11. I totally know what you mean...I've been half tempted to accept one of my offers because they're there and waiting for the rest is killer. However, there is a reason that pending program was your top choice, and I think it's worth waiting to see what they say. Just because they haven't started notifying doesn't mean they don't have their stuff together. It could be something as simple as working around the various admissions committee members' schedules. They might receive a considerably higher number of applications. Maybe the way their term is scheduled affects when adcomms can meet, or perhaps it's an especially tough year and they're having trouble deciding. Whatever the case, it's pretty common for admits to get attached to their first offer. I remember sobbing and laughing simultaneously, a reaction that hasn't occurred for any subsequent offers because the first one is so full of relief, it's just different. Bottom line, I would wait it out and see where all the cards fall. You took the time putting together 10 applications, unless you know for sure you wouldn't attend the ones that you're waiting on, I'd sit it out til the end.
  12. I just want to say that all of you are awesome, that if this is something you really want to do, don't give up! I never would've gotten in anywhere without doing an MA first. I was a lackluster undergrad to say the least, and it took 4 years away from my BA to make a difference. I know that it's painful to take another year, but that extra time can provide clarity. It ain't over til it's over, and the programs you're waiting on would be lucky to have you. If you end up having to do this again, I want to extend the offer of being an extra set of eyes to look over SOPs and writing samples. I was a writing tutor for several years, so I can do as little or as in-depth editing as you'd like. Mostly, having a bunch of people look over my material really, really helped me, so I want to pass on the positive support I received this application season to the very awesome people here. I've said it once, and I'll say it again: I'm sincerely looking forward to having you all as colleagues.
  13. Welcome to the board! We are so glad you decided to unlurk I respond by thanking whoever sent me the acceptance, and pretty leaving it at that. If they mention recruitment weekend I say I'm interested. You don't really need to say anything about looking at other offers.
  14. Don't worry Ivan, I'm sure that's a form email and doesn't reflect negatively on your chances. If your POI seemed positive, that's what I'd focus on. Fingers crossed for you!
  15. I think it's a valid concern. If any of you watch John Oliver--my main news source --you know state legislatures impact our lives way more than the federal government. I wouldn't rank it high in my program ranking, but it definitely deserves some attention.
  16. Officially rejected by Madison. Lovely department, but Scott Walker makes me glad I won't be in Wisconsin haha
  17. MSU and Albany gave me yearly figures, plus stated stipend, insurance etc. Still waiting on the others, but I'd find a monthly figure strange, too.
  18. Some are, you just need to get in contact with them ahead of time and ask. Usually you aren't allowed to talk during discussion when you audit, but it's still good experience, especially if you keep up on the reading.
  19. I know this is an acceptance, but it made me laugh out loud so I had to share. Courtesy of an NYU Musicology admit: "... BY THE BEARD OF ZEUS!"
  20. I'd audit grad classes or enroll in open university ones if you aren't interested in getting an MA but want to do something useful during your year off. Working on languages is always a good thing, especially for non-Americanists (though I encourage Americanists to also gain language skills to set themselves apart). Archival research is great if it's useful to your work. You could also take the year to do teaching abroad, set yourself up as a tutor for high school students or undergrads, etc.
  21. Congrats brl!
  22. Craft beer is a magical potion of happy. I approve, Josh!
  23. Hello, jayray, glad to have you aboard Looks like you've had a rockin' season! Congrats on those fabulous acceptances!
  24. Awww thanks guys!
  25. Thanks everyone. Our group on this forum seriously rocks.
