  1. Maybe TMP has some insight into that, but I have no clue. I think this week and next will be the busiest of the season though. Fun times are ahead!
  2. That's what I'm thinking, maybe someone got in contact with a POI. But I don't think its outside the realm of possibility that they'll be notifying sometime soon.
  3. Ohio State is sending out rejections...
  4. Anyone else get that nail-biter of an email from UMaryland? Ugh haha
  5. LeventeL--my teaching experience definitely helped me. There's an expectation that grad students TA at most programs, and once you're on the job market that experience is crucial. I would highly recommend getting some sort of teaching experience, however that may be.
  6. Haha thanks TMP, your grandma sounds like my grandma. She's afraid I'll catch my death walking barefoot in a heated house. I don't think that's bad form, AZMoose. Let them know they're your top choice but you need funding information before you accept their offer. These programs know most of us need funding, so they won't be surprised. Just be tactful about it.
  7. Congrats Vr4douche! That's so exciting!
  8. I'm not scared, I'm super excited! But being from the Bay Area, the most mild temperature part of California, means my extent of cold-weather clothing is a 5 year old hoodie and tennis shoes. I know I'll have to add some stuff to my wardrobe, but honestly I'm so ready to move away from here and start a program. I'm giddy about it!
  9. Thanks guys! All the information is hugely helpful. I'm more worried about falling on my face than anything else haha I'm excited to go shopping for the first time in like 2 years! I usually wear clothes til they're unwearable (Logic says I buy coffee daily but not spend money on new jeans) so it'll be nice to have some new stuff!
  10. It sprinkled and was cold (for California) today, but people were still walking around in short shorts and flip flops. I don't even know where to start shopping. Do I need special shoes so I don't kill and/or embarrass myself? How warm of a jacket do I need for Michigan and Minnesota in March? Is wool required? Oh god I'm hopeless haha
  11. Oh no...I hadn't even thought about clothing for cold climates...guess I need to go shopping, too!
  12. Yay!! Recruitment weekends should be fun enjoy being courted by the department! Do you know anyone in Colorado area? A week from tomorrow I'm hopping on a train to Santa Barbara and I'm so freaking nervous! Anyone else have events coming up? And any other UCSB folks around here? I'd love to grab a beer or something!
  13. Yayyyyy Heimat!!!!! I'm so excited for you!!! Congrats congrats congrats
  14. I never thought I'd have a decision to make. I was told to prepare to go through 2 application seasons! It's funny, Chiqui, I never even considered that I'd get into Minnesota. I applied because my adviser there is so incredible I had to try, but their acceptance rate is crazy low. I think they accept somewhere between 10-12 people out of close to 200 applicants. Sorry we won't be in the same cohort there, but it looks like you've got some awesome offers to consider!
  15. Congrats nerdguy! All of those are fabulous programs. I think most of us are told to cast a wide net because it's crazy competitive. That's why fit is so important
  16. This sounds very promising!! It looks like they recommended you for admission and now it's just going through the graduate school. I received an informal email from the DGS with my faculty sponsor cc'd the first week of February, then received an email about a week later from the grad secretary with an official offer letter attached. At that point, the website changed: the first page was a decision letter, the application status had changed to "provisional admission" and a new box that said "pending action" appeared with a link to the statement of intent to register.
  17. Bummer about W&M, Chiqui. At least you can cross that one off finally. Rejection sucks no matter what, but having program decisions in front of you is so much better than the wait. I think some of the UCs definitely have multiple waves, as do other state universities. Some of this has to do with how they fund their admits (so a fellowship wave followed by a TA wave) or if some of the first wave declines the offer of admission, they move on to a second wave (for some programs this is more of a wait list and for others it's sort of a pseudo-wait list but more likely to get admitted than an actual wait list). Not all the UCs notify in waves, though I believe most of them have a wait list. You'd know more about Davis (from talking to the grad secretary) than I would; if they accepted your transcripts, I'd assume you still have a shot. Some schools do fund first-years through TAships because they don't have enough fellowships to go around. I personally would prefer to not have TA obligations my first year (talk about overwhelming), but then again I just want to get my PhD with funding, so I'll take whatever they give me!
  18. Oliveur--sorry to hear about the rejections. Some really strong applicants have to go through multiple rounds, so don't give up if this year is a wash! Best of luck! What programs are you still waiting on?
  19. Wouldn't it be sweet if a bunch of us got into the same program? Either way I still want to follow you guys' progress through your programs
  20. At this point I'm only waiting on East Coast and Midwest programs so I'm not holding my breath this week haha although I'm assuming a rejection from Wisconsin, so at least I can scratch that one! What programs are you still waiting on?
  21. I want french toast... Guess I wont be hearing from College Park today! As Aubstopper said, "Snowpocalypse."
  22. Woohoo congrats nerdguy!
  23. Yay congrats scirefaciat!!
  24. I also love the historical accuracy haha
  25. Congrats to the Madison acceptee! I was wondering when they'd get started.
