  1. I have a few things to say about that question. I personally don't feel comfortable trying to get more money from programs. I know most don't have the ability to add money to funding packages, although some have been known to in rare instances. I simply won't attend an institution that does not fund me outright because I wouldn't be able to do the PhD otherwise. However, I HAVE been encouraged to try to bounce programs off each other by more than one professor. I was told that even if programs can't up the stipend, they may be able to offer guaranteed summer funding for a year or two, or maybe provide financial assistance for moving expenses. I don't have experience haggling with programs and, to be honest, I don't want to get that kind of experience. But I definitely will be asking questions about summer/conference/moving funds and opportunities to get such funds.
  2. I'm lucky it's just my daughter and I, but setting her up at a new school and moving all our stuff, let alone finding a place to live and getting a lay of the land, is terrifying.
  3. And there's a WashU admit on the board! Congrats! EDIT: And Rutgers!!
  4. My hope for today is that Madison puts me out of my misery. When I initially applied, UW and Indiana were my dream programs. I'm super stoked about the schools that've accepted me, but I really want all the cards on the table so I can, ya know, figure out my life haha
  5. I'm glad I can spread some positivity around here I get out most of my anger when I'm on campus dealing with a-holes, so Gradcafe is my happy place haha I don't think my quantitative stats are anything special, really. There are plenty of people with perfect scores, which I certainly don't have. Have faith in your SOP and writing sample and especially in your fit with programs.
  6. Molly--are you still waiting on some programs? Don't give up hope just yet! It ain't over til it's over! And if you don't get in this year, keep in mind that many of the most successful applicants on this site have gone through several application cycles (check out the Dealing with rejection thread...TMP and RevolutionBlues told their inspiring stories there). You can take an extra year to bolster your application
  7. Thanks telkanuru, travel is definitely relevant for an Americanist looking at history transnationally!
  8. Congrats to the Virginia and Emory admits!!
  9. I'm having a phone call this week with a would-be adviser to get more information about the program, and I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions of things I should ask. I'm planning on asking about his sort of general expectations, comp exams/dissertation committee structure, his advisement style, etc. but I'm sure I'm forgetting things. I know I posted that extensive list for recruitment events, so I'll be pulling some stuff from that, but I want to ask questions specifically to learn more about my potential adviser and our working relationship if that makes sense.
  10. It doesn't have to be the last one...haha
  11. Congratulations!! That's excellent news
  12. Congrats to the Columbia and all the Princeton admits! And condolences to all the rejections. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and sending you positive vibes for acceptances to amazing programs.
  13. Josh -- Lol! This is me upvoting your post. Heimat -- from past years it seems as though UIUC admits people over a few days in February, with a few early notifications in late Jan.
  14. Congrats to the UIUC admit!!!
  15. Look at placement records as well as ranking. There are some mid-tier programs that have placement records as high as some of the top-tier ones. Granted, you probably won't end up at an R1, but if your goal is a TT professorship then that shouldn't matter much.
  16. I don't think I'll ever read that sequel LeventeL. To Kill a Mockingbird has taken on nearly mythical and mystical proportions in my soul, and I'm worried the sequel may inadvertently knock it off it's well-deserved pedestal. Let me know if it's a worthy addition to the legacy of Atticus Finch.
  17. Congrats mvlchicago! These are exciting times
  18. ARGH I'M OUT OF UPVOTES AGAIN. Congrats, telkanuru!!! That's so exciting!!
  19. Thanks guys!
  20. Haha you are being soooo grad student right now
  21. I wish I could upvote all the comments about upvoting, but I think Gradcafe has revoked my ability to upvote indefinitely (at least it feels that way!)
  22. I got into Albany, but I'm most likely going to turn down the offer. I've just been waiting to get more info on funding from Minn and Davis before I make that decision. The department at Albany is wonderful, so this totally sucks, but I know it's a good problem to have. I know they do admission in waves, and once they hear back from the first wave they start admitting the second, so hopefully someone else gets good news
  23. I think we need all the beers. This has been a helluva few months! I wonder if past cohorts also felt the results came achingly slow haha
  24. Visits are going to be key. Totally agree dewbackguy! I'm really looking forward to upcoming recruitment events. My first one is late this month (UCSB), and I'm starting to get nervous. Any idea what these usually entail?
  25. Who broke gradcafe?!
