Hey y'all, thought I'd set up a separate thread for those of us who want to discuss recruitment events, funding packages and general decision-making without bumming out our gradcafe friends who have yet to hear from any programs and are anxiously waiting. I figured it would be best not to flood the 2015 applicants thread with what I call "happy problems." Of course, anyone is welcome to post here, but this way it gives people who don't want to hear about post-acceptance details an option to ignore us! I found this on the Lit, Rhet and Comp board when I was searching for what kinds of questions to ask during recruitment weekends. I think the key to my final decision is going to be campus visits, so I wanted to take these events pretty seriously. I wish I could like the post a million times. Hope this helps some of you guys too. If it does, it's good form to upvote the post...that is, if we'd all stop running out of upvotes

I know these are out of your period, but two great books that talk about memory and history are David Blight's Race and Reunion and Grace Cho's Haunting the Korean Diaspora. Blight is a beautiful writer, and Cho's book is intense--it discusses transgeneration trauma due to memories of violence passed down by victims of the Korean War. I actually have a list of books recommended to me by a prof whose work is primarily in memory studies, if I can find it I'll send it to you

The Fussell book is amazing.

Congrats to the Duke admit!!! Sounds like they got a great offer
-
Sorry LeventeL there are plenty more schools on your list, I'm sure you'll get some good news soon! And HistoryMystery--totally get it. Having more than one admit means you get to choose, which is a good feeling for sure!

Looks like a Berkeley deluge... Glad you aren't broken up about it dewbackguy! I bet having Northwestern under your belt helps
-
I'm sorry about the rejections, but so glad you already have an awesome offer! Hopefully that eased the blow a bit.

Congrats to the George Washington admit!! Commiserations (and hugs!) to the Notre Dame and WashU rejections

According to last year's results, probably next week.

Thanks for the tip! Those sound pretty sweet!

I guess I'll live vicariously through you, stillalivetui! I wanted to work with Bodnar, but he mentioned being close to retirement. I've loved all the books I've read by him. Just finished The Transplanted.

I'm so jealous. I'm so overwhelmed by the length of that series that I won't even start it haha I do love East of West, though. You should check it out. The artwork is fab.

LeventeL -- the housing prices may be cheaper in Davis, but living costs in California are ridiculously high everywhere. Not that people can't live off the stipend, but I know TAs at UCSC struggled pretty badly most of the time. It's MUCH cheaper if you can find a room in a house, but that's not an option for me with my daughter--I really need my own place, preferably where she can have her own bedroom.

Same here, Heimat...I planned about 6 months in advance so I could cover application fees, GREs and transcript costs. I had to stagger applications in two waves, and at the end I think I made it with under $100 in my account right before payday haha

I wish I could upvote this.

The GRE is a total racket. $200 to take it, god only knows how much spent on study materials, plus $27 per official report? It's so ridiculous. From what I understand, a great GRE can offset a mediocre GPA and vice versa. But I doubt it plays much role in admissions, though some state schools give it more weight because certain funding streams hinge on GRE scores. EDIT: Welcome scirefaciat!

I don't think I'd even know what to do with 35k a year. I'm wayyyy too used to being a broke grad student haha
-
jujubea--I think most of the UCs offer a base package of around $17,000/year for history students, not including summers that I know of. At least that's what I've heard from PhD students at a few of the UCs, including my alma mater (UCSC), Davis and UCSB.

Do any of you guys read comics? I just got volume 2 of the new Magneto (okay I'm super nerdy right now, don't judge me!!) and I LOVE IT. I usually don't like superhero/Marvel-type comics, but this is so bloody and morally ambiguous that it's right up my alley.

I totally agree, Magellan. I get that certain programs need to notify in waves because of funding, but that doesn't help anxiety levels of waiting applicants!
-
Most programs don't interview. I didn't interview at any of the schools I applied, but I did speak to at least 2 POIs at each. I will say that for each of the programs that accepted me, I had really positive conversations with the scholars who agreed to be my advisers before I applied. I don't necessarily think this made my application, but it helped me pick the right programs for my research and career goals.

Good luck JTE! I hope you get some positive news!

Congrats to the Duke and W&M admits!!

Those infernal upvotes! I love that we are so positive that we run out so frequently (Fyi I'm out too!) I also work in an office, and when I'm not working I'm on the computer doing coursework or research so it's quite easy to click on my saved gradcafe/results board tab... I would like to hear from Madison and Indiana soon, but only because I've been told those will report soon! It's almost better if I don't know the schedule of notifications. What about you, Chiqui?

I think after the months of preparation and applying and waiting, the tension is here to stay until we all know exactly where we are gonna be in the fall. Our minds and bodies are just primed with anxiety!
