Also claiming a rejection from UPenn. Now that it's over, I can reflect on my interview with the grad director. it was very confusing -- he was not a POI and he didn't seem to be interested or informed of my academic history. Very frustrating. Why bother scheduling an interview if you're not going to take interest in the applicant? I could go on about my displeasure, but it will only seem like sour grapes at this point. Their loss! Not being a prick, but I find that's the best way to handle rejection in this business. Cheers to all. This process never gets any easier.

Did everyone who got interviewed at Penn get an email except for me? It's not over yet, but this is utterly depressing....
-
I'm right there with you. MIght I suggest smashing your computer into a million pieces and cutting the internet connection that leads to your domicile? It's the only rational thing to do at this phase of the game... Best of luck.

UPenn has announced on President's Day the last two years. In any event, they'll likely announce this week.

Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
proctorvt replied to pinoysoc's topic in Sociology Forum
I deeply sympathize with your plight. I spent my entire 20's in that position. If you still want to pursue an academic career there are still avenues for you. Consider reaching out to professors at area universities to ask whether you might sit in on some courses. This is not ideal, I know -- I have posted about my travails elsewhere in this thread. Life is long if you're lucky. Don't give up on your dreams simply because the "standard route" has been closed off to you (for now). Keep scratching and clawing. In the meantime, take good care of yourself. And always remember that a career isn't guaranteed to anyone -- not even those on this thread who have been admitted to their dream schools. That goal is still well within your grasp if you want it badly enough. Some people's path to an academic career is paved in gold. For the rest of us, we have to fight like hell. With that being said, academia can be a tough and awful road. Give yourself time to think about your future and be nice to yourself!- 945 replies

Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
proctorvt replied to pinoysoc's topic in Sociology Forum
Congrats! Looks like you brought in quite a nice haul this admissions season. You have quite a decision ahead! As they say, these are good problems to have. You are correct that they will accept more than they can admit. A friend of mine bears the unlucky distinction of having been invited to NYU's visitation event but not being offered a slot afterward. That was a rare year when nearly all those ranked above him accepted their offers -- but that was an anomaly. He's currently at Hopkins and quite happy. Silver linings! As for me, I have world-class letters, (perhaps too much?) documented success in various graduate school settings, well-defined research interests, BUT I have little-to-no track record in an actual sociology program. All things considered, it's not easy to crack the top-10 with that being the case. That's just the way things go, I'm afraid. Not surprising, then, that my success came in poli sci programs. Let us know what you ultimately decide. Best wishes.- 945 replies

Oh, I'm not holding out hope. I'm a little surprised I got rejected outright given my results elsewhere, but you never know how these things will shake out. Best of luck to everyone. I'm headed to political science, it seems. I'll see some of you on the conference circuit, perhaps, should you be in the realm of historical sociology etc.- 945 replies

Congrats. For those still awaiting results from NYU, they have historically sent out both acceptances and waitlists over the course of 3 or 4 days. There's no sense in getting too bummed until mid-next week if your inbox is empty. Save those despair muscles until it's really over- 945 replies

Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
proctorvt replied to pinoysoc's topic in Sociology Forum
Sorry to belabor the point, but has anyone heard anything from NYU? I know at least one other person is asking on the results page. I've been through this process enough to know the only correct answer is "shutup and wait" but the suspense is killing me. They average 350+ applicants.... I can't be the only one wondering wtf is going on.- 945 replies

How did it go? I'm sure you nailed it. Any specific word on when decisions would be made? I'm not buying the "few more weeks" that I was told... that will, of course, be when final rejections go out.

Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
proctorvt replied to pinoysoc's topic in Sociology Forum
There is still another hour or so left in the work day, but it seems the notifications will not come out today, either. I was quite reasonable with my anxiety levels, but we're 2-5 days past previous years going back to 2013 or so.... this is the latest they've ever notified. No two ways about it -- this process sucks you into a dark chasm of anxiety, no matter how much you try to resist that impulse.- 945 replies

The date they give is nearly always when final rejections go out. Admissions will come earlier. Thanks to the Results page, you'll know if you're in that pool or not....- 945 replies

Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
proctorvt replied to pinoysoc's topic in Sociology Forum
This is somewhat off topic, but not entirely... as someone who spent nearly a decade climbing that ladder I can tell you that my most useful periods were those when I wasn't in a grad program, at all. It's risky to spend too much time unaffiliated with a department, but if you use your time wisely, this can really set you apart from other applicants. Why? Because grad school (both MA and PhD) happens at a break-neck pace. Often, you're simply trying to keep your head above water. This is great for your long-term development and professionalization, but it often prevents you from reading broadly and systematically. In hindsight, the years I spent reading dusty books in coffee shops are what sets me apart from others who have only an undergraduate or MA degree. This time off can also provide space to publish and/or present at conferences, which are both exceedingly difficult to do when you're crushed with coursework. Of course, there are downsides to this strategy. Being out of academia can be terribly alienating (And it was) and getting jobs to support yourself in the interim can be soul- and body-crushing (And they were). But I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. Never give up.- 945 replies

Don't do that to yourself! I've spent the better part of a decade on the grad school grind. I went from a near-undergrad-flunky to being competitive for Ivy PhDs. I've been in some really dark spots, so I know the struggle better than almost anyone, but never give up. Start climbing. Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
proctorvt replied to pinoysoc's topic in Sociology Forum
Don't give up! I went all the way to Toronto (not far, but I'm American) to my dream program only to be denied admission to the PhD after I finished the MA (there was only 1 slot available to international students... thanks a lot, Ontario government...) The fact that I was far-and-away the best in my MA cohort made it that much harder to take when I wasn't admitted to the PhD program. Hell, I had mentored some of the PhD students when I was only an MA, so it was devastating to say the least! But I never gave up. The admissions process is so arbitrary. Keep climbing -- you'll get there.- 945 replies

Fall 2018 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
proctorvt replied to pinoysoc's topic in Sociology Forum
One (likely) acceptance at UPenn in political science. Waiting on two others. My case is somewhat unique, as I'm making a jump from another PhD program. My training is interdisciplinary, but NYU is tops for political sociology and political economy as far as my interests go. I was hoping to hear something from NYU this weekend. I've played the waiting game several times now and it never gets any easier. I was a honey badger up until the middle of last week, then the anxiety monster got the best of me.- 945 replies

Anyone else waiting it out for NYU this weekend? D-day seems upon us, according to the Results page, but does anyone have more reliable news about when they might make moves? The radio silence is a little maddening... No interviews, etc.- 945 replies

Oh, you'll be fine, then. My interviewer was neither my POI nor would he be even remotely affiliated with my committee. Perhaps that is what made things difficult. I know my POI very well -- we talk regularly. He's not on the admissions committee, unfortunately! Good luck! I'm rooting for you.
-
I should be clear: I'm not sure whether it went badly or not. It simply wasn't as directed and detailed of a conversation as I expected. The questions and concerns that you end up addressing will be specific to the nature of your application. So all I can tell you is what you already know -- be ready to talk about your research interests. What's your major field? I'm American.

I can claim a UPenn interview. Fwiw this person said it would be "a few more weeks" before things are sorted out. I assume that means rejections will go out at the end of Feb and a couple waves of acceptances will be released in the interim. This has been the case, historically, for several years. Good luck all. (Don't bomb your interviews!)
