Go for the M. Ed or try for Ed. D next year??
naomi6 replied to MellylaMelle's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I'm in the same boat (measurement & evaluation program). I've applied to 5 PhD programs (received rejection from all 4 and still waiting on one). TC rejected me for their PhD program and offered the M.ed. I already have an MA in Psychology. You are the second person, I know from this forum who had been rejected for the PhD and accepted into the M.ed while already holding an MA. What is up with that? Call your financial aid contact to see if you received any funding. Also, check with the program head to see about assistantship positions (RA or TA)... Assistantship comes with 6 credits tuition waivers). You could also look for external scholarships. One more thing, see how much of your previous credits you could transfer to this program. If all of that work out, you might not be in as much debt as predicted. Also ask the program director how many M.ed students get accepted into their PhD or Ed.D program. My mentor suggested I attend (she completed her PhD, M.ed, and Ed.D there). I haven't fully accept, I am waiting on one other application. If you received funding, I say go for it especially since you don't have debt to start off with. Attending Columbia can definitely open more opportunities in the future (May definitely increase your chance of getting into a PhD program in the future). I was in doubt about attending until I spoke with my mentor/employer who also attended teachers college. -
Applied for PhD but got admitted to an Ed.M Instead

I think i might take the offer... I received $12K and there's a possibility of transferring up to 30 credits... which would leave only half to complete the program... -
Just wondering if you heard anything?

Education Ph.D or Ed.D (Fall 2014) Applicants

I've applied for the PhD program in Measurement and Statistics at TC and was offered admission to the M.Ed. program. Are you sure there isn't any funding? I received 12K scholarship for the year... I'm trying to get in contact with the program to see about RA or TA positions (6 credits tuition waiver)... I have a question for you, in your application, what did you select when ask if you want to be considered for the Masters? I put "no" in my application (since I already have a Masters in Psychology) but yet I still received an offer for an M.Ed. On the websites, it said you can transfer up to 30 credits (i'm hoping to transfer 21 credits... which would leave about 39 credits to complete). By the way this is my third year applying to PhD (however, it is my first time applying in the field of Education)... I don't think I want to wait another year, I would like to start learning the materials as soon as possible. I haven't accepted their offer yet... I'm still contemplating on it ... One of my mentors suggested that I take the offer... -
HGSE Master's vs. Boston College: Curriculum & Instruction PhD Program
naomi6 replied to Alilla3's topic in Education Forums
The only reasons not to choose the PhD program would 1) Not a good fit or 2) No funding. MA program --> PhD program route is not guaranteed. Additionally, if you were to attend the MA, you will have to be on top of your game which in my opinion is a lot of unnecessary pressure. -
How many more applications are you waiting decisions on? Also are both MS programs fully funded?

Temple University is a great school. It is not a downgrade from NYU. Before you decide, as others mentioned, you should wait for the other decisions. You have almost a month to make a decision (no worries). I do recommend attending the Welcome event even if you are not sure you will be attending in order to get acquainted with the atmosphere. Out of curiosity, why did you apply to Temple in the first place if you weren't sure you wanted to go?

I spoke to the admission department and I was told that they are currently doing interviews. Since I didn't get an invite for an interview, I am going to assume, my application has been rejected.

I don't know if it was an error.... Letter from admission: "Congrats you got accepted to the program. Although your Doctoral application was a strong one, we deem the Masters of Education is more appropriate at this time" -

The degree itself wouldn't help; however, the materials that I would learn at that particular school would benefit me in a tremendous way. It's the idea of taking out loans for a similar degree (even though it is a different school....I currently have an MA in Psychology.... I applied to school of education) doesn't sit well with me. I wouldn't mind taking out loans for a doctoral program since it is a different degree than what I already have. I haven't received their financial aid package yet to see how much their funding will offset tuition. Also, I still have two more applications that I'm waiting to hear from. I just though it was bizarre I got accepted to their Ed.M. when I didn't request/indicate on my application that I would like to be considered for that degree. Letter from admission: "Congrats you got accepted to the program. Although your Doctoral application was a strong one, we deem the Masters of Education is more appropriate at this time" -
Probability of getting accepted without an interview to a PhD program?
naomi6 replied to naomi6's topic in Psychology Forum
From the responses, I'm going to make the inference that it varies.... And just because you haven't received an interview does not equate rejection... Anything goes until you get the decision letter... Thanks y'all :-) -

I'm completing my MA degree this Spring Semester. I applied to a few Doctoral programs in the field of education. I recently received an acceptance letter; however, it is to a Ed.M. program which I did not apply for. I find it strange that I was considered for the Masters program when 1) I checked no on the application for consideration into the master program and 2) I'm currently completing a Master program. Why didnt they just reject my application? I can't fanthom the idea of spending another 2 years for another master degree... plus the cost (My current school debt is $40,000).... It took me three years to finish my current MA program (attended part-time due to full time job).... The school I'm currently attending doesn't offer doctoral degrees in Education. If i was to attend the Ed.M., will i increase my chance of getting into the PhD I initially applied for?

Accepted into Ed. Psych Statistics with possible funding...HELP
naomi6 replied to karen1204's topic in Decisions, Decisions
First, wait to hear back from the other applications. If this is the only program that you received acceptance for, then I would say go for it. I wouldn't mind investing 80K for a PhD with a concentration in measurement and statistic. There is a high demand for individuals who specialized in measurement and statistics, especially in the education field (I currently work in that field as an evaluator). Also, this is your second time around. Are you able to invest another $1500 in application fees, transcripts again? -

Two people reported acceptance to the Social Research Methodology PhD program at UCLA. -
Has anyone or know someone who have been accepted into a PhD program without getting an interview? More specifically for educational psychology? I looked at the research results from the past (2010 -13) and some people submitted that they got interviewed during that time period... I applied to five schools and haven't gotten any interview invitation... I received on rejection letter so far, should I assume the others will reject me as well?
