You're right. Germany must be that rich enough to give our so many grants! Lucky people who applied to Germany! I hope it will be earlier than January 30, 2016! Wow, your project sounds interesting! Is there a reason that led you into this kind of project? No, I applied for the academic grant as a recent undergraduate. I have no experience teaching English to a classroom full of kids. My work will be focused on how the deaf Italian entrepreneurs achieve economic independence with their own businesses in Italy and how Italian government, institutions, organizations, etc can support the development of deaf businesses (or minority businesses, in general). This work is based on my senior thesis research on "deaf economy" for both US and UK, but this time, I am expanding to Italy and with narrower focus. Most of the times, I will be using Italian Sign Language instead of Italian, but I still submitted foreign language eval for both languages anyway. There was a Italy-Fulbright grant for Deafness, but that one is 6 months long, which is not long enough needed for my project, so I applied for the regular 9 months grant...I hope this one doesn't hurt my chances.

I think Germany is also one of the competitive countries! I'm hoping to work with Ca' Foscari University of Venice! What about you? Are you an undergraduate, graduate, or else? I'm a recent undergraduate. I also wish we didn't have to wait so long until late January! Do you know which day?

Fellowships for post-undergraduates (Bachelor's)
wildchartermage replied to wildchartermage's topic in The Bank
I know about all of them, but I am not yet ready for the commitment of a degree yet. More like...a gap year time to do my own research project, etc, until I apply for graduate school after that year. I have a disability and not all programs and schools provide equal access, so I have to take more time and effort on my part to research for the best graduate school program that meets my aspirations and goals. -
Fellowships for post-undergraduates (Bachelor's)

Actually, I am more focused on Europe, in particular Western Europe. So I was asking about a fellowship that allows me to propose a project that pertains to Europe or create on my own project like Fulbright. :) -
Any fellowships similar to Fulbright (already applied to Italy academic grant) that post-undergraduates can apply for next year? I would like to spend a year or so abroad because I don't feel ready for graduate school yet, especially I haven't decided which programs I want to apply to. Ideally, the grant would allow you to develop your own independent project, especially if it is related to the humanities or social science. Of course, googling brings up some results, but thought I would ask you guys here in case I may have overlooked fellowship opportunities.

Wow, this is a great and detailed post! I am sure that advice would be helpful for any fellowship application, right? How would one define a "competitive country"? I had applied to Italy academic grant for next year. About 140 people applied for 14 spots last year...now, that sounds very competitive!

Applied for Fulbright 9 months academic research grant for Italy for 2016-17! I was either for Deafness study grant or the general grant, but I chose go to with the general grant because it is 9 months instead of 6 months (Deafness grant) and gives me enough time for my project. Anyone else applying to Italy?

Mocha, Thanks for your insight/tips! Most of the Asian professors I saw on the Internet had their interests and website information listed in English, but I don't know if that means if the professors know English. There was also an Asian language version of the same page. But you're right, if I come across their work in English, they should know English.

Hi Guys, I had just graduated with a B.S. degree in both humanities and science (joint major) from a private university in the Northeast USA. I am planning on taking a gap year before going to graduate school for Master's or Ph.D or somewhere else. I've been thinking about the possibility of working as a research assistant, research associate, or something else similar in my areas of interest (social science, economics, sociology, disability studies, etc) overseas, such as Japan, China, etc. I was wondering if anyone else had the experience of cold-emailing professors overseas (as opposed to domestic professors)? Would professors be able to read in English, since I believe English is the working language of academia, right? I am sure the process to obtain an opportunity overseas might be more complicated because I'm sure there are other things to consider, such as visa, paperwork involved, etc. Any thoughts or tips would be helpful, especially if anyone can speak from their experience. Thanks!

The email I got from Fulbright said this: "Fulbright National Geographic Fellowships: First round status notification will be issued by late-April 2014 and final decisions by the end of May 2014. Emails will be sent to the email address that you used when your set up your Embark Application account. We received 864 applications for four to five Fulbright NatGeo awards. We can no longer accept additional application material submissions nor additional letters of reference/Foreign Language Evaluations."

Yeah, it was indeed difficult to put it together! What themes and countries you had applied for? The website said 5 fellowships will be given out. And um...the list of my digital publication (very short...only about 5...Lol, like I have the time to publish tons of stuff while studying in college...I had plenty of papers to write for my classes!)...the hyperlinks didn't work in the pdf document.....I had realized that after I submitted the application.....I don't know if that mistake would cost me or not. D'oh! I feel so stupid! >.< Now that the process is over....I guess time for me to keep looking for backups, such as other jobs or fellowships...but looking for full-time jobs is soooo difficult! >.<

Even though I'm a humanities and an Earth science major, my proposal has nothing to do with climate change, food, biodiversity, or any of other themes except for...Cultures and Cities. My interests lean toward anthropology and sociology rather than Earth science, even though I'm majoring in both. I had proposed to tell stories of the daily lives of people part of the British and Japanese Deaf cultures in major cities, showcase the beauty of both British and Japanese sign languages, and how those Deaf people struggle and triumph in their everyday lives since there is very little awareness in international mainstream media outlets on non-American Deaf communities, especially many people around the world don't understand or often stigmatize people with disabilities, so this is where I want to fill in the gap. I'm an undergraduate senior...hoping to defer the job search process for another year because looking for jobs is too hard and cumbersome, compared to applying to fellowships. Haha. So, PhDsoon.....are you a PhD candidate for Earth science? Climate change, right? I've studied/researched some climate change myself in the past...but decided this isn't where I want to pursue in the future for my career.

Hi everybody! I had just applied to the newly established Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship! I was wondering if there is anyone else who had applied as well? If so, how was the process for you guys? I had managed to pull everything together in two weeks...so tiring and time consuming! I had proposed to tell stories in United Kingdom and Japan. Fulbright had said there were 864 applicants for 5 spots....oh damn....definitely a long shot! Best of luck!
