  1. Illinois State Speech Language Pathology MastersRejected via Website on Mar. 14 2014

"I pulled out a bowl to put soup in, I have forgotten if I put the soup in because I see the can not opened, but why is my bowl full, oh because I have a bowl full of tears, rejection soup, with a combination of five different types of rejects"

This made me laugh. Good luck man!

  2.

Can't tell if spending time on this thread is making my wait better or worse, but congrats to everyone who's received some great news this application season! Hopefully the 5 millionth time I check the application site will yield good news for me as well...

I don't know if this is helping me either but it is nice to know there are people going through the same thing. Good luck to you and congrats to everyone who has been accepted!

  3. I think I got into Stony Brook's Molecular Bio and Microbio, maybe? I'm a US Citizen, and said so on my application, but due to a computer glitch I got asked to fill out immigration paper work (I spoke to the program coordinator and apparently this is a common problem, but it is fixed). However, I haven't gotten a letter from them yet. Yay limbo?

  4. I already talked to the program coordinator and they straightened out. It was weird, the department I applied to knew I was an American student because I said so on my application, it's just a glitch in the software that sent my information to visa and immigration. When I applied the application wouldn't let me submit my application unless I clicked both US Citizen AND Permanent Resident, and this caused visa and immigration to get my info despite the fact I submitted my social with my application. According to my program's admissions this is a common problem.

Thank you so much for the fast reply!

  5. Hi there! Due to a glitch in the software they use for their applications, I accidentally got labelled as an international student at one of my schools. As a result I was recently asked to begin filling out immigration paperwork. What does this mean? Do schools ask all international students to do this regardless of application standing or do they only ask if they are trying to accept you? Thank you for your help!

  6. I checked both schools I interviewed with and both of them told me nothing! One said that my decision was available, but it just brought me to the interview acceptance page (I should have known when the date available was 1/02/14). The other one said that my application was being reviewed by the admissions committee. This is driving me insane! *cries*

  7. My rejections have been actually been pretty okay.

    • I got rejected from Rockefeller first, which was unsurprising but I got a very nice letter.
    • Then I got rejected from U Penn, which sucked because it was my number one choice, but not surprising since everything that could go wrong my application did. The only thing that sucked was that I got rejected while in the middle of an interview at another school, which I guess is the best case scenario?
    • I just laughed when I got rejected from Boston. It sucked since I thought I was definitely going to get in at least to the Masters program, but it wasn't all that surprising. I would keep forgetting that I applied there and when I did remember I couldn't recall if I applied to Boston College or Boston University. I'm pretty sure that not remembering which school I applied to is a good reason to get rejected, so no hard feelings.

Now the waiting is killing me. I keep getting good news indirectly, but I haven't heard from my remaining schools yet. AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Do NOT use the Princeton Review book! The biology review was horrible. They made up terms and got basic information taught to high school students wrong. I quickly switched to Kaplan and it helped a lot.

One thing I recommend doing is taking a diagnostic exam to see where you are weak in. The Bio GRE asks questions from across the board, including a few areas that I never touched (they like paleobiology a lot for some reason). There is also a disproportionate amount of material on plant biology on the test. Take a diagnostic test and review, review, review! I recommend using an intro Biology textbook (my personal recommendation is Campbell's Biology) to go over areas you are not very familiar with. A review book can only do so much, and a text book will go into much more detail.

I hope this helped. Good Luck!

  9. I live in New York City, so I can talk about Columbia and NYU.

NYU is located in the West Village, which is a relatively safe area. It's mostly residential and largely populated with NYU students, so it is safer than some other areas of the city. It's also a huge tourist destination, so it is usually pretty crowded and there is a strong police presence in the area. Plus, NYU doesn't have a true campus, so university police are stationed throughout the area.

Columbia is way uptown, and while the area surrounding Columbia is okay, be careful stepping too far away from campus, especially if you are not familiar with the city. However, the area up there is lovely and as long as you watch where your going and pay attention to your surroundings you should be fine.

The key thing to remember about going to school in any city is that it is as safe as you make it. Always be aware of your surroundings and your valuables. Use bags that close at the top with a zipper or buckled flap and keep your eyes and ears open.

  10. One thing that helped me is that due to a mistake on my application where the system interpreted me as an international student, I was asked to start filling out immigration papers for one of my schools. I'm not an international student, but I'm taking it as a good sign! But to help not think about waiting I've been watching a lot of horrible TV shows to distract me.

  11. Every time I tell somebody I am applying for a PhD, I get

Person: "Don't you need a Master's for that?"

Me: "No, not necessarily. I just need research experience."

    Person:"How long does it take?"

    Me: "4-6 years."

Person: "It takes 4-6 Years? Who's paying for that?"

    Me: "The school."

Person: "Oh yeah? What's the catch? There's always a catch. Don't trust them!"

Me: "The catch is I sell my soul to them for 6 years."

    or I get

"You are? That's great! Don't worry, you'll get in everywhere; you're so smart!"

    That one really kills me.
