  1. I hope it is a troll...and if no one here is calling it then I'd say it's fake. Let's hope that its not a sign of rejection...Augh calm down Kafcat...Need to be prepared...
  2. Mine says received too...
  3. Regardless of the outcome, great job lads! it truly has been a journey applying and waiting.
  4. @sierra918 what's wrong with my post about the cost of living lol? Anyways, that information I got it from the fulbright commission that I was part of, but maybe @GK Chesterton has it right also.
  5. The stipend depends on the cost of living. Depending on where your friend is placed, Austria can be significantly cheaper than Italy.
  6. Completely agree with this, I was just speaking for people who get the Fulbright ETA and do nothing on the side. I was pretty lucky to engage in conferences and community outreach in my country which helped my applications. But from what I have heard, an ETA is not as impressive as a research grant in order to get into PhD programs. Maybe other grad programs, yes, ( I had a couple of fulbright friends that got into the foreign service programs, law school, teacher's college, etc).
  7. But either way congratulations to all of the new grantees!!!!!!!!!! This will be the best year of your life I can assure you of it!!
  8. I heard of Fulbright literally my senior year as I was writing my undergrad thesis...so writing a proposal for the research Fulbright seemed daunting. Additionally, I think Fulbright advisors at some universities take pride in that they are a high producing fulbright university and they want to keep that label..so they highly encourage students to apply for the ETA. My advisor even told me that it would increase my chances of going to a PhD program! I don't regret anything about the Fulbright experience since it has been the best year of my life! But, had I known that it would do literally nothing except give me a label for the rest of my life, I would have applied for the research grant. Now that you're in the PhD, do you know if we can apply for the research grant later on for dissertation purposes? I have heard both, yes and no (mostly yes). Also another very important thing for future Fulbriyhters. Having the Fulbright label does NOT automatically open doors for you. People outside of academia/education/do not generally know Fulbright. Upon return I had a hard time trying to convince employers that Fulbright is a legit program as opposed to a backpacking trip in Europe. You want to go to as many networking events as possible in your host country so that you can put something else in your resume other than just "teaching english." I think there is this sadly common misconception (also echoed by Fulbright) that once you get the grant, you will have access to all sorts of things. The reality is a lot more different. My fellow Fulbrighters also had a hard time looking for a job back home while applying for grad programs.
  9. If you can't defer take the PhD offer. The Fulbright ETA means nothing in academia since it is not the research grant. The ETA is good if you're applying let's say for masters or MPP, etc. But it won't necessarily look any better on your CV for grad school. Actually, I am not even sure if you can later apply for a research fulbright if you accept the ETA grant...maybe wait and apply for the research one (if you plan to do your dissertation in something related to international affairs/cultures,e tc). While I had the best time of my life as a fulbright ETA, I don't think it did much to boost up my chances to get into grad school (also got into a top program but I don't think Fulbright had anything to do with it).
  10. oh my god you scared me....this is LAST YEAR'S thread...almost had a heart attack...
  11. Yeah mine says received *gulp* what's the link for the thread?
  12. Anyone else simultaneously waiting on the Ford/NSF? D: Wonder which one will release their results first...
  13. yay!! we should all get together at one point to celebrate the achievement of being at UCLA!!
  14. So next week is the big day? So scared...
  15. I got into a top 10 program at a quant score similar to yours and a lower verbal score, slightly lower GPA (and this is for a PhD program). That being said, I had great LORs, competitive CV, research and activist experience etc. If you want more info send me a message. I would say that you should probably get a higher quant but depending on your experiences I'd say don't give up.
  16. Nope, right here with you. We should be hearing soon right? Gah.
  17. Rejected! Applied during the 2nd deadline. Oh well, good luck to everyone else ☺
  18. Guess what! I got the cota robles too!!!!!!! They just told me yesterday when I was in the preview weekend event !!!☺
  19. definitely!! I'll message you next semester so we can meet up!! like you said, we need some grad school craziness solidarity!!
  20. So I donlt know which country you chose but I can definitely tell you from experience that it will be enough to live comfortably. However, if you want to travel a lot and buy tons of stuff, I would suggest getting small side jobs to supplement your income. Its not necessary but if you want a little bit more, teaching esl on the side usually does the trick.
  21. I guess I wasn't awarded the fellowship! (unless there are different dates for each department). Either way I am waiting on other fellowships but I am 98% sure I will accept my offer at UCLA. CONGRATS ON GETTING IT THOUGH!!!! :))))) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
