  1. Hello, my name is Kiera and I have also accepted an offer of admission to a graduate program at U of T! I will be studying Speech-Language Pathology in the fall, and am very excited to attend such a great school! That being said, I was wondering if anyone could give me housing advice regarding the residences? I am currently living in Tokyo, originally from Saskatchewan, and the most of Toronto that I have seen occurred during a 5-hour layover. Thus, my knowledge base is limited so I was wondering if anyone could inform me about Graduate house and Chestnut residence? Through my limited research these two seem like the best options for graduate residence, however I am used to living on my own and am worried about a resident environment. Thoughts?
  2. Just wondering, what made you pick Alberta? I have the same option and I am almost positive that I will be attending U of T, so it would be interesting to hear the opposite point of view.
  3. Yay!!! I got in to U of T my number one choice!! This is my second time applying there and one of my best friends lives in Toronto! I am so excited that I jumped up and hit my head in my tiny Tokyo apartment. If you don't get in this year try again, because the initial rejection makes acceptance so much sweeter!
  4. Just got emailed that I am on Dals waiting list. Does anyone know the length of it?
  5. Thank you for posting this, it makes me feel better to know someone so highly qualified did not get in as well. I have a 3.89 sGPA, 100 hours with two SLPs in two populations, research experience in cognitive neuroscience, have worked for Autism services, have hundreds of other related experience, had a speech impediment as a child, and am teaching English in Japan... I just don't know what else I could have done. But c'est la vie I will be an SLP anyways Rejection just always sucks
  6. I think it also depends on what area you want to practice. I think each school has it's strengths, but some have difficulties with certain placements. If you are wanting adult neuro then U of T or Mcgill might be the best options, and if you are wanting to work with children Alberta or Western might be better options. U of T and Mcgill both have trouble finding voice and fluency placements, where as Alberta and Western have difficulty with Adult Neuro (I think because of the size of the city), but both have in-house clinics that have large pediatric sections. However, it is also important to note that if you are not sufficiently bilingual Mcgill may have trouble placing you in your desired clinical placement. Based on the clinical placement restrictions I think that each school is slightly specialized to the available placements surrounding that school. This is not to say that you can't go into adult neuro from Alberta but that each school may just have a slight focus. Source: I only have information on these schools because I have a good friend in each program (who went to undergrad with me).
  7. I think their waiting list is also very small.. So most likely all wait-listers heard today. I hate to be negative but I'm assuming this is the kiss of death to my application haha. Also could you message me your stats?
  8. Congratulations! Just wondering, how did Dal let you know? Has anyone else gotten an acceptance from Dal? Also, has your status on UApply Mcgill changed yet?
  9. Ah Congratulations guys! If its okay could I also receive your stats? Not that I think I got in, but I'm concerned that I currently don't have a Canadian phone. I am currently living in Tokyo and the phone number I gave them is no longer in service... I'm sure that if they really wanted to talk to me they would email but it still makes me anxious.
  10. I think the biggest thing was increasing my hours with a SLP and volunteering with multiple populations! Also, I got a job with Autism services and became a research assistant. For me it was increasing my experiences in the field that was most important I think!
  11. Hey guys! It is starting to get exciting! I also got into U of A! Two days ago they sent me the email :) After being rejected from three schools last year I was soooo excited to get that acceptance letter that I jumped up from my bed and screamed waking up my roomate. For anyone who doesn't get in this year do not give up!
  12. My ORPAS hasn't updated yet? Did you get an email?
  13. I just got an email from Dal! Finally It said: [i would like to confirm that all of your required application documents have been received. Your application is considered complete.] Thank goodness
  14. I am! I emailed and they told me that they were really backed up and could not give me any confirmation.
  15. The GPA calcuation can be found on the bottom left hand side of the application menu that has information about orpas. However, ORPAS will update your profile to show the exact grades, total gpa, and last 60 gpa sometime in Febuary.
  16. Anyone else applying to Mcgill: how long is your personal statment for the second two questions? The first one has a 2000 character limit, but the other two are not specified. Thoughts?
  17. I emailed them about this, and they said that they want a course outline if available. Mine are also not in URL format, but if you have them in doc you can convert them to URL online. It may be okay to give the URL to the course catelog as long as it has some information on the course and not just the course title.
  18. Thanks MtlGal, that's good advice Also, U of A states on the website that the application opened Yesterday, but I still can't apply? I really have no idea what is happening to their application..
  19. I have a similar question, if something is completely relevant to the feild (Work with Autism services) Where can I put it if I got paid(its not technically volunteering)? Also, has anyone else noticed on ORPAS that you can choose if the volunteer experience is with SLP/AUD or "other volunteer experience", but even if you choose related volunteer experience it asks you "activities supervised by Aud/SLP". This is rather confusing to me.
  20. Hey Becky, I just wanted to say that I am in a similar situation, and it is very difficult not to get discouraged. I applied last year to U of T, Mcgill, and Western and didn't get in. My sGPA was 3.75, I had great references, and I had volunteered for 20 hours with and SLP (hundreds of hours with related volunteer work not supervised by an SLP). It was so hard to get those rejection letters. However, not getting in has allowed me to volunteer with an SLP for 100 hours, become a research assistant, get a job for Autism Services, and, currently, teach English abroad. I hope for the best this round of applications, and I think that the fact that we didn't get in the first time will make us appreciate it more when we do (please let the 'getting in' part be true).
  21. Hello friends! I am just wondering how everyone's applications are going? Are all the Canadian applications open now other than U of A? I'm already getting anxious
  22. Thanks for emailing them! I think I am just going to try with these GRE scores and hope for somewhere to let me in haha. I got my writing score back, and it's in the 93rd percentile so all my scores averaged is the 71st percentile. Which, according to U of A is okay. Toriec, I would suggest you wait to see your written score. The link I posted for U of A shows that they look at the average of the scores. So if your written is above the 80th percentile, your overall score would be above the 64th percentile and thus in the bracket of admittance. If your written scores are below the 80th percentile I would rewrite if I were you. As for Dal, I am worried. However, if they place different values on the scores it would make sense to value the Quant score the least for this program. So hopefully it works out!
  23. So here is the stats for GRE that U of A looks for http://ualbertaslp.wordpress.com/2013/06/27/what-we-bring-to-the-table/ basically, you need to be above the 63rd percentile when you average all the types of scores. So.. should I retake the test for Dal? What do you think
  24. So I wrote the GRE. I got 159 Verbal, and 150 Quant. I haven't gotten back my essay mark, but I would guess it to be around 4.5. What do we think people? Is this good enough for U of A and Dal? I would meet the criterion for U of A, but I can't find any stats for Dal. (my sGPA is 3.92 and my overall GPA is 3.65 ORPAS)
