  1. I applied last year and was in the extra round with Draper and Sandia labs. Apparently draper req's its interns to be enrolled at a neighboring university. Last year though, GEM failed to communicate the Associate/University Fellow options with the school I intended to go to and thus they had not budgeted for it. At the end of April 2014 they knew nothing about it. Then I found out that the notice had been sent to the school also in April. Then I was asked what I was going to do now without having the funding, and encouraged to take out loans (which would be in excess of 50k). So I ended up deferring enrollment and rolling over my application to this year. I was very frustrated to find out I was still req'd to apply to 3 schools (more app/score fees) again despite their error and me having already gotten into the school of my choice. Applied early consideration again this year, reached out to companies early, got responses from a couple right away, a couple after they'd already made selections (some are extraordinarily rude in their interactions with students), and I also applied for co-ops on my own. Last week I received the letter saying I wasn't matched. I swear I remember seeing last year that if you found an employer on your own you could still get some level of fellowship. As a matter of fact i know of 2 people who did this. I have definitely experienced getting completely different information depending on who answers the phone when you call. All in all, I'm beyond disappointed and frustrated with what appears to be a lot of disorganization in this process. Needless to say I will not be reapplying. At this point I'm really wondering if this Master's is worth it. Congrats to everyone who has been selected and best of luck to everyone still in the race!
  2. Yep, mine changed to "released" this weekend.
  3. i applied last year. major miscommunication between my university and GEM so i reapplied this year for early consideration again. I got a call from one company last week, was a brief conversation and the rep let me know they were about to review candidates later that week. Still havent heard back yet. My status still says held. Has been that way for about a week or so.
  4. Hey! I just tried searching for your FB group with no luck. Can you post the link? Thanks!
  5. There's a thread for Johns Hopkins Fall 2014 However I am planning to attend. MSE for fall
  6. Nice! I plan on attending for the MS MSE program. Have you been able to find any information or an accepted students group?
  7. Hello All. Anyone else planning to attend Johns Hopkins University in the fall? I tried finding an accepted students group on facebook but now such luck yet. Excited to meet some other students.
  8. yea now my status says unmatched. But i officially accepted my offer from Hopkins today, they are still talking about funding me because of GEM so hopefully they follow through with that and I'll be either an associate or university fellow. gotta wait till monday for confirm
  9. Very true. Same to you!
  10. funny because now my employer status says released
  11. congratulations! I just got official notice from GEM that I was not selected by an employer. I really want to just accept the admission i have currently--but i still have FOUR schools I still haven't heard from yet. My GEM app says they are willing to sponsor me but they made no mention of it so I really don't know.
  12. nice!! i'm hoping this blurb on my gem app about being sponsored is accurate! still have yet to receive any details about it from the school though **fingers crossed
  13. Had to do some digging to find this but apparently these other options have only recently been added to Gem's program (this is year two). Found in one of GEM's newsletters (I think October 2013) is the following: GEM Fellow: Employer sponsor/internship, Full tuition and fees, and stipend GEM Associate Fellow: Full tuition and fees plus stipend GEM University Fellow: Full tuition and fees It is my understanding that in all cases the school is paying your tuition and fees (and stipend if applicable) not the employer. So even in cases where a student isn't offered "sponsorship" by an employer, they may still be sponsored by the university/their respective depts. In my case I care more about the tuition and fees than the internship (assuming that is all the employers offer)---due to my UG's strong co-op program I wouldn't have a problem finding one on my own.
  14. Same here. I haven't heard anything. Starting to settle with not being matched with an employer which honestly wouldn't be the worst thing especially if I manage to be a GEM Associate or University Fellow.
  15. oh okay. well good luck to you!
  16. no problem. my status says matched still. Nice! howd your interview go?
  17. thank you! maybe try calling back? i didnt get his name but its an older gentleman and he was very open with information
  18. I just got off the phone with them. Got some good information. Apparently there is one last company, Draper Laboratory, who has ~5 spots left to fill. They have been presented with a list of about 15 students and have been taking their time to make a decision. This is why there wasn't any notification sent out last Friday. I was told I was a part of this list of students. And also that they are hoping Draper will make final decisions this week.
  19. I haven't heard anything either. I was thinking about doing the same but have the same apprehension
  20. I got accepted to JHU this week. Still waiting to hear from Uconn, UMD College Park, RIT, UDel, and NSU
  21. this might be a silly question, but has anyone considered whether or not the schools you apply to confirm your acceptance with GEM before you actually hear from them?
