  1. Frame material is definitely important. Steel will absorb impacts from riding over cracks much better. My guess is most cracks in the road will not harm the cromo frames that are popular today, you will just feel the vibration through your bike. I don't think you are damaging your bike unless you hit a really large pothole.
  2. I haven't started Grad school yet, but here are things that helped me during undergrad/ lab tech days: -Bike to and from campus everyday, and at least one longer (30-40mi) ride a week (A little cardio everyday does wonders for my mental health) -Whenever I can, schedule time to cook a nice meal with my SO -Keep a group of people to hang out with a couple times a month outside of lab. This serves as a reminder that lab work and courses are not the only aspects of life -This one may seem silly. Call your siblings/cousins every once in a while. It's surprising how uplifting a short phone call can be. Especially when the person you are talking to is actually interested in what you have to say. I hope to roll these habits over to graduate school.
  3. The Children's hospital was pretty awesome from what I can remember. I will be rotating in biomedical science tower 1, which is just down the block from you. Also I just got contacted by a current Grad student at Pitt offering help finding a place to live (I think this is the 'housing helper program' you mentioned). I assume they contacted you as well. Hopefully they can help you find a place within your budget.
  4. Hey, I'm also in IBGP and will be starting in June! I'm planning on moving there about a week before the orientation. I also found a two bedroom place (to share between me and my GF) for $900/mo near Frick Park. I think the two bedroom places in Pittsburgh are significantly cheaper if you are willing to have a roommate.
  5. I grew up around Chicago. I would definitely consider safety an issue for U Chicago. The campus itself is safe, but the area immediately surrounding campus is not so safe. I would definitely apply, but pay attention to the area when you are there for interview. You will be able to tell if its for you or not. Sorry, can't speak to the other places.
  6. Thanks Guys. I guess I really just needed to make sure I wasn't being irrational by turning down this fellowship.
  7. Hi everyone, So I received 5 invitations which is great. I could definitely see myself attending 4 of these, but obviously I liked some schools/locations/programs better than others. I brought it down to two choices. Pitt- IGBP. I would likely join the molecular pharmacology program. I thought I was finally close to finalizing my decision to attend Pitt. I liked the faculty and students there better than anywhere else. There were so many faculty that shared similar research interests to me that I was having a hard time deciding who to even do my rotations with. I think the program is competitive enough that I would be challenged, yet still not feel like I am falling behind. I am by no means a "top applicant" here which I think is good for me. I want to be challenged and motivated by my peers. I view my peers as competition (in a good way!). Surprisingly, I even liked the city a lot. UMN- Pharmacology. I thought I was basically settled on Pitt, but then I found out that I had qualified for a fellowship through the UMN medical school. This would mean I would come into the UMN with my own funding. The obvious advantage to me is not that I would earn more (I have eliminated other programs that offered more money with lower cost of living), but rather that I would get to join pretty much any lab since the PI would not have to pay me. The other advantage is that if another student and I wanted to join the same lab, the PI would be inclined to choose me since he wouldn't have to pay me. The other advantage is that my PI would be less likely to push me as hard (not sure if this is entirely good). There is research here that I enjoy, but the department is much smaller.I also feel as though I would have less competition here. This is my home institution and I am pretty familiar with the area. I like living here, except for the soul-crushing winters. So I'm stuck. Pre-doctoral fellowship + program I like less or My favorite program with regular funding? Anybody have any thoughts?
