  1. You don't have to get into specifics when you let them know, you can simply say that the school #1 would be a better fit for you.
  2. If you are sure that you want to go to #1 instead, send #2 an email explaining that subsequent to their deadline you have been accepted to a program that is a better fit for you. Since you have not signed anything yet, I'm not sure if you have to ask to be released - maybe someone else can opine on that, but you should definitely email them before April 15. if #2 is a signatory of the Council of Graduate Schools' resolution and the offer you accepted was a funded offer, then your acceptance would be considered binding after April 15 and you would definitely need them to release you first (which they would probably do). Keep in mind that you should do this as politely as possible, since possible future colleagues at school #2 may be offended that you've changed our mind on deciding to go to #2.

  5. You should definitely let the professor know via call or email. They won't take it personally and they will probably wish you the best, but it is good courtesy to say something to the prof.

  7. As I'm not female, I'm probably not the best qualified to weigh in on this topic, but I think the reason schools try to sell you their ratio of female students is to show that as a woman, there would be other women in the program that you could relate with. This discussion reminds me about a discussion on a machine learning list about the relevance of the Women in Machine Learning workshop. A few profs and grad students weighed in and gave their views: http://groups.google...471734d7264b3a1
  8. Welcome! I'm not in your field (I'm in CS) but from what you have posted here I don't see any reason why you can't apply directly to a PhD. Why do you say that you don't have a good chance of getting into a PhD program?

    TSA locks

You can label your luggage with a sticker or a tag and write your name and address/phone number/email on it. At check in, the airlines but a special tag on your luggage that has a number and a bar code on it. This is the baggage claim tag seen below: Then the airlines will give you a corresponding baggage claim receipt (1 for each piece of checked luggage) that they usually stick on your boarding pass like this: Some people put distinctive marks or brightly coloured straps around their luggage so that they are easily identifiable when you go to collect them from the baggage carousel.

    TSA locks

You can put as many labels and identifying marks as you want on your luggage and the airlines would have them at the counter when you are checking them in (of course you can always label them before). The airlines put the baggage claim tag on your luggage when you check them in at the start of your trip.

It's always recommended to have your luggage labeled - the airlines all have tags and labels that you can use to label your luggage. The airlines also give you a baggage claim sticker that they stick onto your boarding pass that has a corresponding number tagged to your checked luggage that they use to track it - make sure that you don't lose this sticker during transit. I guess luggage gets lost when those tags get displaced/removed somehow? I've had luggage left off a connecting flight before - but was able to get it back due to the baggage claim.

perhaps sending a mass email to the current students and see if anyone is looking for a roommate. once you are familiar with the area, you'll know where to move to next year.

  14. You're welcome. Were you able to contact the prof from this group before applying? If so, I'd try contacting them again. If not, I'd send an email to the address they specified. If they say they don't want to be contacted directly then generally it's not a good idea to do so out of the blue.
  15. I would say that it might be worth it. I spoke with a prof from Waterloo when I was looking at schools to apply and he told me that the way it works at Waterloo is that they circulate applications around and if a prof wants you then you get in, if not, then you don't. This prof made a point of telling me to let him know when I applied since many times, profs miss applications they might be interested in. So it might be worthwhile to remind profs that you had been in contact with before that you had applied. Good luck!

  19. I guess either of those dates are fine. Maybe you should go with the 15th and then remind them again a week or so before the deadline. One way of politely reminding them is to ask them if they need any more materials from you, such as your transcript or statement, etc. Good luck!

  22. Cheers for being different! There's nothing wrong with being a little different from everybody else in your group. Keep hanging out with them as well (in addition to your partner's group), they're important for your academic success. I think they'll get used to you the more you hang out with them and the more that you 'be yourself' around them. Personally, they sound like a bunch of stiffs to me

  24. I know UMD has a strong reputation in computer vision, I'm not sure about the strengths of the other programs in CV as that's not my area.
  25. I think GT is considered well by employers. USC as well. GT is higher ranked than USC in Computer Science, I'm not sure of the relative strengths in SE, but that would an important factor in your decision. Are the tuitions similar? If one is significantly better in terms of tuition, then that could potentially be a deciding factor since both schools are well regarded.
