  1. Shameless bump. I'm wondering if NW's reputation is worth the 30k debt? Tbh I went to a no name undergrad so I've always wanted to go to a prestigious school. I know it sounds really shallow but the program is also not bad. Most of my friends think that I go to a community college for undergraduate :/
  2. I guess I'm kinda dealing with a similar situation. I'm wait listed at my first choice but I'm second on the wait list which the professor said every single year there are more than two students drop out before August. Even if I don't get in this year I'm guaranteed a spot for next year. Since I'm given a 40% tuition scholarship for my second school so I'm going there instead. I'm still wondering what will be different if I go to my first choice :/
  3. i received a very generous offer for my financial aid package!
  4. Approximately 30k more in debt after the program if I go to Northwestern.
  5. I applied to master programs in mental health counseling (MHC) or marriage and family therapy (MFT). I got accepted to NYU for Mental Health Counseling, MA with a 40% tution scholarship. I just got a call today from Northwestern and they told me I'm second alternate on their waitlist for MFT, MS. I will have to tell them by tomorrow if I want to commit to their special alternate spot. What they mean by that is that I will have to drop other acceptances and commit to their program. I might have to wait all the way till August before I can hear back. They said there's a big chance, but I also need to drop other acceptances because if I don't get in this year, they will guarantee me a spot for next fall. For both MFT and MHC licensure I will have to work under a licensed therapist/counselor for 2 years before I can apply. So pretty much I will have to stay another 2 years after my master program. Northwestern Pros: MS in Marriage and Family Therapy, a more scientific approach to counseling which I like. (Biopsychosocial model, interpersonal approach) Slightly smaller program Reputation of Northwestern plus number 1 in Marriage and Family Therapy 100% employment rate Visited the school, and I'm pretty neutral about the program (Have not visited NYU) Cheaper rent Cons: Mostly no financial aid Chicago weather, no intention for staying in Chicago for long Far from family (in DC) Might have to defer till next fall if there's no spot More expensive program Absolutely hate the color purple lol NYU Pros: Great internship opportunities 40% tuition scholarship Close to family Like the urban city life More reputable outside of US (for some reason?!) Slight cheaper program Cons: Slightly lower ranking than Northwestern (the education school is ranked 20th) More traditional approach to counseling (Mental Health Counseling, intraperosnal approach) Have no visited the program More expensive rent Again, absolutely hate the color purple lol
  6. Good luck!! I just paid for my deposit
  7. I just received my financial aid package today!
  8. I'm looking at the brooklyner in Brooklyn heights (downtown Brooklyn) and Lexington street which is three blocks from Central Park. Living in graduate dorm is more expensive than renting an apartment. Plus they don't provide internet and stuff. (I did the math) PS: I received my financial aid package today
  9. I got admitted to another progrma withint he Steinhardt school and I have talked to a couple of people. None of us heard anything about financial aid yet.
  10. onto apartment hunting now!!! LOL
  11. Good luck in deciding I might see you in NYC this coming fall!
  12. Still waiting on Northwestern but it seems like it is gonna be a no from them so super strong chance i will see you this coming fall!!!!!!! :D
  13. Yay!!! Seriously both amazing schools!!! So excited for you . I'm still waiting on northwestern but if things don't work out there then NYU it is PS: you are talking about switching degree during your master? it is extremely rare I believe especially considering you are getting a sizable amount of money and the two majors are most of the time from two different schools within the university.
  14. NYU is 6th in Public Affairs and Cornell is 37. NYU is in NYC and Cornell is in middle of nowhere. I think other than money, it is a no brainer. NYU for sure. Especially NYU Wagner is so famous. Congratz!
  15. First Congratz! I personally would choose washu. It's number one for social work and you save bunch of money. To me it's a no brainer. Although I would not wanna live in the south. Tbh I think washu is just as well known as Columbia in the state. Tough but clear choice I feel like. Again Congratz!
  16. Omg Congratz!!!!!!!! Have you decided??!
  17. Anyone else waiting for their financial aid package from NYU steinhardt? It still says 2015 financial aid not accessible for me :/
  18. I saw someone posted before that Stanford doesn't make the transition from master to PhD easy. But I'm not sure if it is the same program. To me it is a no brainer, I will definitely take the UCSD offer considering it is a great school.
  19. Getting kicked in the balls once per day
  20. May I ask if you guys know if all steinhardt departments require interview? I was really shock that I didn't get an interview. This is the only school that I didn't have to interview.
  21. The thing is there's no guaranteed.... This is PhD not undergraduate. You should really do some research and look at the acceptance rate for different tier of school. The problem is no one is willing to take a risk nor give money to you to do research when your application is weak no matter which school you are talking about. I'm not trying to be negative but I think you should be a little bit more realistic. I understand your frustration but maybe there's a different way to achieve what you want. People here are just trying to help you maximize your potential with what you have.
  22. IMO your GPA is not gonna affect your chance at all. Probably not to a PhD application and definitely not a master application. A higher GPA would be a plus but your GPA will definitely not hurt you in anyway.
  23. I just thought that whenever you turn in a LOR you have to waive your right to look at the LOR. Also when you sign something, aren't you implicitly say that you are the writer of that specific letter? Tbh, I don't i've ever heard of anyone editing their LOR when most of the time the recommenders are supposed to upload the LOR directly to the engine to avoid situation like this. Again, this is bounderline unethical to me. The whole point of LOR is to let the committee hear what your professors have to say for you, not another SOP with your professor's signature.
  24. I just want to chime in and say that your application is whole package that represents you. It shows the committee who you are, how you value education and the dedication to the subject you intend to pursue. I will say that yes math grades are important but the other grades can be just as important because it tells different parts of you. It may not tell the committee about your math ability but it tells the committee your study ability, your mental flexbility...It just seems like you are making a lot of excuses to a lot of stuff that you didn't do well. "As for grade, I got C on complex analysis because I partied too hard the night before the finals and overslept. Adv electromagnetism got B because I took it in my freshman year and get basically no preparation. Maths for physicist got B+ because it have some oral speaking component and I got stage fright." I'm not saying that you can't party or you can't get stage fright, but considering PhD applicant pool is so competitive and you don't stand a chance against them. I think the general consensus that with your current application there's no way that you can get into a PhD program not to mention tier 1 program. I think you need to move beyond your mistake and accept the flaws that you made. Stop giving excuses about your mistakes because what's done is done. Because right now I feel like the committee can see not just the lack of ability but also the lack of dedication to the subject. You talk about how much you love the subject but from the application it doesn't even show that you are dedicated to academia at all (i'm not saying that you are not but your application doesn't show that's the problem)
  25. I'm still waiting on GW too. I had my interview on feb 3. I don't know why they are taking so long. I probably not gonna go there but I still wanna know :/ I called them and they said they are still processing the application and I was like....
