Which masters program will boost future PhD app?
HKsai replied to 4everastudent's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Sorry I think i just got a little bit confused Tbh i had the same question for my counseling programs too (the council for accreditation of counseling and related educational programs). From what i hear is that the accreditation is a plus but it shouldn't dictate other important factors such as the school's reputation, the internship opportunities, and the faculties etc. Like for most of the counseling programs that i'm looking at are actually not CACREP accredited (NYU, columbia...). But again I'm only aiming to obtain my license after my master and a non-accredited will not prevent me from getting my license. IMO i think it's more important that you like the curriculum and the faculties because i think you will have no problem getting into a PhD counseling psych program with either of the two programs considering you do well and all your other materials are good -
Which masters program will boost future PhD app?
HKsai replied to 4everastudent's topic in Decisions, Decisions
what programs are you gonna do from the two univerisities that you are talking about? You said you wanna do counseling psych for PhD but you said the ivy doesn't have that then what program are you gonna do if you go there? -
i feel like you have to ask yourself first do all three degrees prepare/allow you to get the job you want after graduation? Then I will look at the location (money for rent, desirability of the place). Is money really important that you will sacrifice some internship opportunity? If all three degrees offer the same education after graduation, which place would you prefer? Do you have the money for it? I don't wanna pick it for you but if the NYU degree isn't exactly what you want, and UT Austin doesn't offer you the opportunity you want, wouldn't you want to go to BU? Sorry since i'm not a advertising/communication major I can't offer much help. Good luck

Hi! I believe that's just them being polite and try to update you about the status of your application unfortunately :/ you can check the result page and see if anyone got into your program(s) to get an idea. Good luck!

NYU-Steinhardt Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness
HKsai replied to laurenk0428's topic in Waiting it Out
I heard back on March 14. Someone i know heard back March 7? I think they do it in waves. If you don't get in the first few waves and they haven't rejected you, you still have a chance! Hope to see you this coming fall -
American University or University of California, San Diego
HKsai replied to plkphuc's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Even though there are job opportunities in both places, I really think AU will be the better choice because of what you are studying. I'm also a little bit biased since my sister lives in DC and I think it is such a beautiful city not to mention the vast opportunities for internships. (but then i've never lived in California before LOL) -
Reputation of CUNY's and SUNY's in other states...
HKsai replied to deci:belle's topic in Decisions, Decisions
it's funny because i feel like reputation/ranking are important but i also went to Rochester. I'm from Seattle/Hong Kong so no one really knows what U of Rochester is. They either think it is NYU (Hong Kong people) or SUNY (Seattleites). But i know what SUNY is! :D -
Is your NYU master gonna be in the Steinhardt school? I recently got an acceptance from there for a counseling program too but they stated that you cannot defer the acceptance :/ Your gpa is kinda low considering your major GPA is even lower. I think you can get into a PhD program but it would be hard for you to get into a really really good one (imo). I think it's best for you to go for a master and show that you can do well in the classroom. You can even pick up some research experience along the way to boost your resume.

Hi! I'm kinda from HK too I got into NYU Steinhardt for a master program...don't know if i'm gonna accept it yet but i most likely will

Since English isn't my first language, I only did so and so on the GRE (60%~). When i applied to schools, I wrote an "addendum" explaining my situation and how standardized testing didn't represent my success in undergraduate and it certainly wouldn't predict my future success in graduate school. It might be a little bit late for you to do something like that but it never hurts. I think the professor will appreciate the professionalism and it is also better to explain in a couple of formal long paragraphs instead of just an email.

Where are you from?
HKsai replied to I am not sure yet's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
I was born in Seattle, grew up in Hong Kong, went back to Seattle for high school then Rochester, NY for college -
Hi! In the mean time of waiting for acceptances/rejections, I'm wondering if there's any counselors out there (school, mental health, marriage and family therapy...pretty much any form of counseling or therapy) can give me some advice or just talk about the field in general. Any other people with experiences in the counseling field are welcome to join too! I will start! So how's the job prospect for a male conselors? Is it harder for male counselor to find a job since males are seen as less sensitive?

Hi All! I've been having very bad experiences with the GWU School of Education. I submitted my application on Jan 15th and went to the interview on Feb 3rd. They told all the interviewees that we will hear back from them in 2-3 weeks. It's been a month and 3 weeks now and I still haven't heard back from them. In addition to that, my friend who applied to the same program (MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling) got an interview and then they RETRACTED her interview invite. Tbh, I honestly believed that I connected with the interviewers but guess not Even though GWU is not my top choice and I got in a better program but I still wanna know where I stand :/ What are you guys' experience with GWU? Good? Bad? okay? Not here bashing but I'm just wondering if these practices are common in other school.

Hi! First time posting here. I'm currently a student at U of Rochester and majoring in psych. I applied to a couple counseling/therapy programs. I'm wondering if there's a huge difference between a MS degree and a MA degree (at least for counseling, social work, mental health programs)
