Whatever it is, it won't be enough to cover the whole ticket. I did this a few years ago in a different city and found my own accommodation, saving quite a bit of money, as the language center's lodging rates were in my case pretty extortionate. (They just give you a huge wad of cash when you arrive, it's pretty funny, very Scarface.) But otherwise, you're correct--the grant does not make any allowance for meals and other incidentals. I think most people who receive this grant are still on their regular graduate student stipend from the US, allowing them to cover their costs. You should be able to find a place to live in Berlin for two months that will help bring your budget under control!

I'm not sure there's any point in calling the regional offices, since Bonn seems to have taken over the task of drafting and sending out all the notifications this year, probably explaining the delays. It's so frustrating.

While it's wonderful to hear of everyone's acceptances, and I send my sincerest congratulations to you all, the portal screenshots are a bit much. Telling folks to look out for "funding" in their application status is a bit like telling hungry people to eat the prime rib on the plate in front of them. We get it; there is no ambiguity or secret language to decipher.

In any event, they don't make that distinction (priority/non-priority) for the language grant.

while I think "priority candidates" from partner universities have maybe a better shot than those in the general competition, that 70% figure sounds like total BS to me, particularly if you're sourcing it from a few anecdotes

for US applicants to the grad research grant it seems that rejections/alternate notifications go out first, unsure about the language grant. Actually, have any US Research applicants received an acceptance yet?

That stinks! I'm sorry you haven't heard yet. But I agree with Horb, at this point it's better not to e-mail. Calling might work, or if you're applying through your home university, perhaps a dean/fellowship administrator can contact someone?

Yeah, it seems to be umgekehrt this year, as the notification letter was written by Bonn staffers and posted on the portal. NYC told me they selected, but Bonn handles everything else in terms of processing/notification. In any case, the back and forth seems to delay things considerably

All offices of the "German House" in NYC (DAAD, German Mission to the UN, German Consulate, et. al.) are closed today as well. FWIW I was told that selection for American candidates (at least the research grant) actually took place in NYC...

Veronica, none of us know more than you do at this point. You just have to sit tight and wait for a proper notification. The staffers in Bonn who are responsible for your home country/region will most likely get around to it next week.

hey crookster, unfortunately they didn't tell me my score, so I have no clue! I do know the list is ranked, but neither NYC nor Bonn would give me more information than that. Are there any US grad research applicants out there who were successful? If so, would you mind sharing the deadline for accepting/declining the grant?

hey Pup, thanks for your posts. I'm sure I'll be joining your ranks soon enough. I was an alternate for Fulbright a few years ago and was ultimately unsuccessful, but here's hoping things turn out well for us both this time around!

I don't think so! It seems like every country (and then every grant program within said country) is divided up among various DAAD staff in Bonn. Some are probably just quicker/have more to do than others. Don't despair!

It means that if a winner turns down the scholarship then they will give it to someone on the reserve list. How many people are on this list and whether it is ranked or ordered by discipline/field is unclear to me, but I doubt they would divulge this information anyway. My portal status, for the record, still says "selection made." I think it's safe to say that this status is meaningless and there is nothing to be inferred from it.
