  1. I hear this one a lot. As though it's not occurred to me. My other favorite is "Well of course you'll get in everywhere. You had great grades and you're a GRE prep teacher." THEN after I've patiently explained how selective the programs are, and eventually get rejected, the same person goes "How could you not get in? You had great grades and you're a GRE prep teacher. Did you screw up your application?"
  2. I haven't heard back from Wayne State yet. But I also moved last week, so now I have grad school mail forwarding paranoia. Can you let me know when you got your acceptance and how (email?)?
  3. Definitely meet with him. At worst it's a slightly dull meeting. At best, it's new information about your second-choice program, a great fallback if funding or anything is prohibitive with your first choice, or merely a connection with a highly-experienced academic in your field. It can't really go badly, right?
  4. Hi, Has anyone heard back from Carnegie Mellon in the humanities yet? I'm waiting on the English PhD and my boyfriend is waiting on his resubmitted History PhD app (he was accepted and then deferred for a couple of years, in which time the department began full funding, so they offered to resubmit his app automatically.) It says their notifications are handled exclusively by the individual departments, so there are no projected dates, but neither of us have heard from our respective departments, which seems odd this late in the season. Also, anyone know how the once-deferred-now-funded-resubmitted app affects his chances this time around? It's hard to tell if this is a formality, as they kind of recruited him last time, or if the funding has really changed the program's selectiveness that much. Also, anyone hear from Wayne State in Detroit? They were my super-safety school, and I'm a little perturbed not to have heard yet.
