A heads-up: I declined an offer from the University of South Carolina. I hadn't received funding yet, but hopefully my spot (with potential funding) will open up for somebody on the waitlist.

I used this Kaplan program, as well, and I thought it was a great help.

I just got an email from the department. Apparently my contact's numbers were a bit off, but were still pretty close. 150 applicants and only 7 offers for the PhD program. Tough year all around.

I'm not sure how many MAs. But you're right, this is sort of a bizarre situation with so many people getting bumped down to the MA program.

I also received an offer to the MA program, although I applied for the PhD. One of my contacts in the program said that they received around 120 applications this year but were probably going to make five offers for the PhD program.

I've lived in the Columbia area for the past 18 years and currently work downtown. I lived for a little while in a duplex in Cayce, which is just over the Congaree River from Columbia. Way cheaper housing (rent was $600 split between two people), a minimal amount of undergrads, and a 5-minute drive from campus. It was perfect for commuting to USC. I would personally stay away from most downtown apartments due to loud college students. However, for downtown options, I think the Cornell Arms, which is right across the street from the Horseshoe and directly behind the State House, might be fine. Also, I think the Wilshire House (condos), which is a few minutes walk from the campus, might also be popular with graduate students.

I've been sorting through past years' results, and it does seem like there should have been more acceptances listed at this point. I would think we'll be notified soon, but maybe an increased number of applications has slowed down the process.

I'm still waiting for nine more schools. March should be a busy month!

I know exactly how you feel. I'm going through this myself: I work at a university, as well. I thought that the stress would end when I received an acceptance, but now I'm trying to figure out how to tactfully put in my notice this summer. Nobody knows that I've applied for graduate school, let alone been accepted. They knew I planned to eventually pursue a PhD, but not that it was going to be this fall. I didn't want to tell anybody for fear of receiving no funded acceptances, only to have them let me go without any actual graduate school plans after the summer. I really have no idea how to leave this job without a very awkward, uncomfortable situation in the workplace, especially since the economic crisis will likely cause my school to institute hiring freezes very shortly.

There is a good chance I'll be attending Penn State this fall. I was offered funding, with a stipend of $15,700. Would this be enough for rent and living expenses (I plan to live alone, without roommates, and have no dependents)? Also, I would really like to avoid housing popular with undergraduates.

I've been wondering about BC, as well. So far, I've still heard nothing.
