  1. if you are worried about it, talk to your advisor or department chair... i was in the same situation and i was freaking out because other students were telling me that a C meant academic probation. i talked to one professor who scared me even more by telling me that it was unacceptable and that i should re-take the class (but also that i would have to have a C AVERAGE to be on probation). then i talked to the department chair and she told me it really didn't matter because this class is simply a requirement for everyone in the department but has no direct bearing on anything i plan to work on. if your department is anything like mine, everyone (including professors!) has all different ideas about these kinds of things. the only way to know for sure is to talk to someone who should really know.
  2. why not iAnnotatePDF?
  3. I am trying to decide what to write about myself to put on my department's website, but it is a little intimidating, especially since I am just starting out and my research interests aren't as clearly defined as other people's. Anyone have any experience with this or advice on the topic?

    UChicago

I will be attending UChicago in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures (Russian lit). I am so excited!! I am going to live in the University's graduate housing (submitted my application the other day). Anyone else?
  5. What about if I visited campus and spoke with several faculty members/ grad students (8 or 9 people)? Should I send each person their own thank you? Or maybe mention each of them in a single thank you card?
  6. The AW score is completely meaningless. If you are applying to a humanities program or some other program that requires a lot of writing, they will look at your writing sample and your SOP. It would be kind of ridiculous for them to take the word of some anonymous grader and computer program whether you can write. And I would strongly discourage anyone from having it re-scored because they will probably not change the score. Think about it: what kind of reputation would they have if they changed their scores very often? I am coming from a humanities background. I've always gotten A's in the many writing intensive classes I've taken during the course of my undergrad career. I took the GRE twice, one year apart. The first time, I did not study for the AW at all. The second time, I thought I would try to raise my score and studied their supposed grading criteria and tried to write exactly the way they want. I got 4.5 (63rd percentile) BOTH TIMES. I'm still in the middle of the waiting period, but I have had interviews with three schools (including an Ivy) and been accepted to two (including my number one school: Chicago). To me, this is proof enough that no one gives much credence to the AW score. These profs are too intelligent for that I was very worried about this for a long time (and actually my poor AW score was the main reason I decided to retake the test), which is why I'm taking the time to write this and reassure others. In conclusion, DON'T WORRY.

No, I haven't really been seriously considering them since I heard from Chicago. I don't know if I will withdraw though. Pitt really wasn't even a good fit for me... plus, during the interview, the prof asked me if I really wanted to go there and he was really nice, so I felt like I should let them know out of courtesy. As for the other schools, right now I still kind of feel like I want to have some backup options in case something goes wrong.

Well, I actually withdrew my app from Pitt. U of Chicago has always been my number one and I've already gotten in there... Now I'm basically just waiting to hear from Princeton and Harvard, because those are the only two that I might consider over Chicago. Good luck with your app, though! Hope everything turns out in your favor. I wish someone else would speak up in this forum if only to take my mind off of all of this for just a second. I mean, I know this is a small field, but come on! Are we really the only two this year?
  9. There are a couple schools that I haven't heard back from that are no longer in the running for me. Is it appropriate to contact them and say so? Obviously, I'm not going to be rude about it, and my intention is to be courteous to the adcom and the other applicants. How would I go about such a thing?

Well, it's interesting because for the other two phone interviews, the professors/interviewers specified in the email that part of the interview would be conducted in Russian. The prof from Pitt did not mention speaking Russian so I was A LOT less nervous about it. I think I did much better this time because I didn't have time to freak out about it. I kind of feel like testing my Russian speaking/listening skills has been the main purpose of all of the phone interviews, but all three have used it as an opportunity to tell me about their programs too. Incidentally, the two schools that have accepted me did not interview me at all.

I got an email from Pitt regarding the interview on Friday, and had the interview earlier today. What are your research interests? I am mainly into 19th century Russian literature and Russian intellectual history.

Me... I've heard back from three schools. I'm 2/3 so far. I've had phone interviews with three others. How about everyone else? I know there must be more than just the two of us on here. BTW, thanks for starting the conversation. I've been wondering too.
  13. Thanks and спасибо! I feel better now. I don't know how I should handle the interview request now, though. The worries never end!
  14. About a week and a half ago, I received an email from one of my top schools (from one of the professors I mentioned in my SOP) that congratulated me on my acceptance and gave a basic overview of my award package and stated that I would be receiving something with more detailed information in the mail. They didn't interview me at all. Not even over the phone; just sweet, sweet acceptance. Well, needless to say, I was/am very excited about this, but there is still a big part of me that is worried that it is somehow still not official and they could take it back, or that it was a mistake. I will not truly believe it until I see physical proof (i.e. the package that they are sending me). I remember reading somewhere on the forums that someone had received an similar "unofficial" acceptance email from a professor and then later on found out that they were not really accepted. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF THIS HAPPENING TO ME? that is my big question. Also, in the meantime, I have been getting requests for phone interviews from other schools. Most lately, my last choice/safety school (of the schools I applied to). I definitely don't want to go through the stress of an interview with my last choice if I have already been accepted to one of my first... but I'm still not 100% sure that the acceptance is official... Reassure me, please!
