  1. From what I've heard from my future cohorts, Winter Park and Oviedo are the top areas for grad students to live. UCF has student apartments everywhere walking distance to everything, but that means rooming with either really cool undergrads or really foul, never sleep, or be able to study undergrads. I personally can't risk it lol. I've gotten in touch with an apartment complex that fits my budget for a studio, and I'm not too sure if it was a sales ploy, but the man said he only had one available and that was the third week of June which is before when I planned on moving. I'm afraid apartments are renting out fast with the upcoming school year. It makes sense though since over 60,000 students attend UCF. On craigslist, I found a bunch of apartments within your price range. And most of them have accompanying websites for further info and pics. I think what I may end up doing is renting a room for a few months and then transitioning into my own apartment.
  2. Seems bad luck has tapped me on the shoulder. My roommate decided she wants to move to Texas with her ex, so I will now be looking for a studio lol. I probably won't be up there before you since I'll probably be visiting now around July. Let me know how things go in June! Hope you like the area.
  3. I wasn't awarded an assistantship either, but I am on an unofficial waitlist. I'm hoping I receive one by my second semester. I've applied in other positions but have yet to hear any feedback. If I secure one for my first semester, I might die of happiness.
  4. The move is killing me but more than that, I am just fearful that I won't produce any worthwhile work when there. In undergrad, I knew I was one of the better writers in the class. Now, I'll be surrounded by equally if not more qualified published writers and the fear is overwhelming. To top that off, I keep having nightmares that I'll move to a new city, and start my first day of school, and then the department tells me I never finished my undergrad. It's recurring and horrible. I'm hoping this anxiety disappears after a few weeks there.
  5. I tip the newspaper guy, and he gives me a second paper free. And then I double up on coupons. I also go to company websites on the deals I have and see if I can print manufacturer coupons as well, I've gone into the store and have come out with the store giving me money back. All the basic necessities if planned well can be gotten for free or around the .50 cent range. Basic necessities for me include toothbrush, toothpaste, detergent, dishwasher soap, paper towels, and toilet paper. When I combine all of that with food, I generally spend 20-30 a week. If you like processed boxed foods, the total is a lot less with the coupons, but the one thing I splurge on are fresh produce and meat. Couponing depends heavily on your local store though as well. Some stores don't accept a lot of coupons so you'll have to check that out. Some stores accept competitor coupons as well. I always get Walgreen coupons and then go to target and use them there as the mark up is often a little higher at the smaller stores.
  6. You guys have made many great points. I have found a roommate since my first posting which is both a good thing and possibly a bad thing. Her credit score is around 550 and my credit score is around 650 (wasn't as bad as I thought). I didn't know her score was so low, but we both have good rental history. She has a salaried job which I think helps and makes around 40k a year. Collectively, we make around 60k and that's including student loans. I hope this will be enough to get us by. A side question: when I lived in Iowa for a year, I rented a room from a friend. Would a letter still work from her even though she was not an official landlord? (Everything was paid in cash) It just struck me that many, if not all of my questions should be targeted toward my future landlord. Sorry for posting so many questions, and thank you everyone for the help!
  7. Johnny-P is cool with me lol I found a roommate which will hopefully make things easier. We're looking for a 2/2 or 3/2 depending on price that's pet friendly since she has a Taco Bell dog. (Have no idea how to spell the real name lol) I've been looking into the Winter Park area as well. We're planning a trip up there soon to look around. I'll let you know here if we find anything promising.
  8. Thanks! I will try to save as much as possible. I didn't receive any funding for my first semester because there were budget cuts in the department, so I'm taking out loans to get me through my first semester. I wonder if they'd consider the loan as a form of income. I definitely plan on working full time while going to school and will most likely secure a job within a week once there. (Hopefully) I may end up subletting or something similar. I really would prefer my own place though. I can't stand a lot of noise, and I like to come home from work and school and just plop on the couch in silence. Lol Though if I did end up subletting, I'd spend the majority of my time in the library or at work which is doable too.
  9. Hi all, I was accepted into a program about three hours from my hometown. I've rented once before from an apartment complex and it went well for the most part. My fear is I won't find an apartment for school this time around because my credit score dropped pretty significantly, low 600's, and I won't technically have a job there since I am moving to a new city to show proof of income. How should I go about the renting process under these conditions? Will I be able to find an apartment? I'm saving now with my summer job, but I'm not sure of anything. I thought the admission process was hard, but I'm fearful getting into a program and not finding housing could be worse.
  10. Hey KingScilla, I'm moving to Orlando as well, though I'm waiting until just before the Fall starts. I got accepted into the MFA program there. It seems to me that Oviedo pretty much is the best or ideal location according to my future cohort. That's where I'm planning to look. I've found some promising scenarios in the area, but I'll have to see them in person to be sure which won't occur until August. I most likely will be staying at a hotel until I find the right place. Good thing I have a lot of Marriott points hehe. But yeah, reviving this thread may be a good idea.
