  1. Usually no. However if you're admitted and funded, you can use your funding as a means of financial backing. Most schools only ask of financial backing only when an applicant has been admitted and by that time, you'd know if you got funding or not

    Poor Gre

Wondering if I should retake. Q 152 V 158 GPA is about 3.3/4 WES Applying to pharmaceutical sciences programs phd at medium to low ranked schools. I'm an international student Expecting about 4.5- 5.5 in analytical writing Wondering if I should retake so I stand a better chance. I do have one year internship experience with an Indian research agency for pharmaceuticals Taught in labs to first year students. Please help assess my credentials. PS A couple of schools clearly state 300/3.0 Gre/GPA as base requirements
  3. Hi. I took the Gre today and my score breakdown is 152 Q 158V What are the chances I can get into pharmaceutical sciences PhD at low ranked schools. Most say they require a minimum score of 300 but I don't know if i should retake or apply I really don't want to take the Gre again but I don't want to miss this admission cycle so I could retake if necessary what do you guys think?
  4. @victorydance this isn't an argumentative essay. That interpretation up to you.
  5. @OP your approach is the best. I studied so hard for the quants and ended up getting 152 despite putting in more than 10x more effort than verbal on which in scored 162. Wish I hadn't wasted my time
  6. I feel rather depressed after taking power prep. I've put in so many hours into ensuring I get at least 160 on both sections. My first power prep came out as 165V 162Q Secobd power prep about 3 weeks later was disastrous. V 158 Q 155 After studying so hard on the quants. I don't get it. Granted I wasn't composed in the second power prep but nonetheless I found myself really struggling with verbal which has always been my forte. The math was no better. I've done most of the questions in the manhattan 5Lb book only to get a reduced score? At his point I'm saying ' F the Gre' Whatever happens on Friday so be it. I'll just probably apply to low ranked phds. Feel so bad right now
  7. Please critic my essay and let me know the score you'd give and why thanks!! Prompt: The perceived greatness of any political leader has more to do with the challenges faced by that leader than any of his or her inherent skills and abilities. Greatness is a rare quality. Few political leaders have been opportune to be called “Great” and this accolade is no mere feat; for greatness goes beyond skills and abilities. Greatness encompasses ability to rally the denizens in time of challenges, build upon successes in time of Surpluses and create a solid background that gives hope for the future. Challenges are the greatest test of any inherent skill or abilities, because they put the skills to test. Without challenges to put any acquired skill to test, they can be described as merely labile, unused and stagnant. Political leadership has always been about bringing solutions to community problems. These may include ethnic conflict, natural disasters, segregation or poverty. Nelson Mandela, a world-wide peace icon is celebrated today not because of his skills acquired as a librarian, but because of his ability to peacefully rally the black population of South Africa into demanding more from an oppressive government. Although he paid dearly for this by spending about one-third of his life in prison, this challenge was eventually overcome and his deepest convictions, for which he was willing to be incarcerated, showed the greatness in him. Skills acquired through various means possible and not put to test through challenges are questionable because chaotic events tend to make people edgy, we lose our composure when we are under pressure and only then can our true personalities be unmasked. In a political world full of duplicity and brazen mendacity to citizens, challenges are important in unmasking the true motives of leaders. Skills may be on paper, but greatness requires more than theoretical abilities which may be built on lies. Furthermore, Skills like every other human endeavour is honed. Challenges are tools through which skills are honed. Mahatma Gandhi, the great Indian leader didn’t become great through skills learnt at Oxford University but because he spent years as a political leader fighting for Indian Independence and over time he became an iconic figure, a father image who the common citizens look up to for inspiration. Indeed in politics, senate leaders often seek support of older senators for help in stalemates. This shows that through years of challenges, skills can and will be developed. Skills and abilities however are important in great leaders. The ability to tacitly negotiate, knowing when to back down and ability to empathize with a grieving populace are all part of qualities needed. This can be seen as complimentary in the making of a great leaders. Hence they are very important attributes that define any great leader In conclusion, being a great leader is often not a quality that is defined by skills or abilities but by the ability to combine skills and abilities with deep seated beliefs and combining these effortlessly into making things better for the citizens despite the difficulties that may arise from taking that position.
  8. Dead link. Fix.
  9. Quite surprised because my Powerprep is Powerprep II.. That's the way it's written. Unless the old one is written that way too.
  10. How come you're all getting exact scores from power prep? I got a range of scores. In the old format for that matter. Am I missing something?
  11. I just took a mock test on power prep. I got a range from the old scale. Quants (750-800) Verbal (650-750) I got 33/40 in quants 30/40 in Verbal. What approximate scores in the new GRE does this translate to? I'm having a hard time pinpointing. Although I think my weak point is quants as I was guessing a lot.
  12. I tried the two tests at the back of the 20th edition book today and was perplexed. The quants questions seemed a whole lot different from the ones I've solved so far in the power prep. The questions were poorly weighted by difficulty so as to make the timing standardized. I found myself struggling against the time and the questions seemed more like an Iq test rather than a test of quantitative ability. Is anyone else experiencing this or is my quants skills sub Par? Thank you
  13. Wow Thank you so much. Guess I've got work to do.
  14. Such a hate filled comment. Wish you had an idea how much international students contribute to the US economy. Oh wait. Silicon valley and other start ups are fueled by foreign computer scientists You should be a poster child for Rush Limbaugh. Seriously
  15. What score would you give this AW essay. With reasons. Topic Claim : in order to help small businesses thrive, the government should play a minimal role in private business matters. Capitalism for all its merits in the development of a free market economy and its casual freedoms has a fatal flaw. A winner takes all mentality which inadvertently could lead to larger firms, businesses with financial backing swallowing up the smaller less recognized and usually local industries, firms and businesses. In this regard, the need for government to help small scale industries thrive is exigent. In 1999, Walmart built two megacenters in Seattle, Washington and a trend was noticed by researchers at Washington State University. The installation of Walmart invariably led to the closure of various seattle local business food chains which employs locals and has been a favorite of the locals until the big guns came in. This closure led to the loss of jobs for many people who depended on the small scale food outlets in Seattle for a source of Income and as such the unemployment rate spiked. This prompted the local Seattle council, noticing a negative trend to come in as adjudicators in a big fish vs small fish issue and decided that Walmart’s licensing will not be renewed. The effects of this impending decision remains to be seen however, we can extrapolate from other cities like Amsterdam, Netherlands and Oslo, Norway which have done the same that it usually leads to a fortuitous outcome. Furthermore, all over the world indigenous industries have to be protected by the government from quasi predatory big companies with worldwide connections and possibly outside funding with which the local businesses cannot compete. This concept known as Indigenization is practiced in nearly every country of the world despite globalisation because the need to keep local industries going is important. In analysing whether government has a right to intrude in local businesses rather than letting the course of free market forces take precedence, it is imperative to look at why the government was elected in the first place! certainly not to fold hands and watch local businesses owned by tax payers and probably hundreds of years old and run by generations of families run down due to inability to compete with the money flowing from the big leagues. It is ultimately the responsibility of a citizen friendly government to ensure that the locals are protected from any deleterious outsider influence. In certain circles, it may be argued, that government interference in business portends a negative trend in the economy because susceptibility successive changes and policies may affect outcomes and a constant government meddling in business affairs is never a good thing. Government meddling in business affairs cannot be equated with making legislature that protects the citizens. It doesn’t defy any Keynesian rule of economics neither does it undermine the fundamentals of capitalism and free market economies. A good example of this is Switzerland, home to several financial institutions but also a very protectionist in its dealings with outside influence especially in business. Governments that are distanced from the citizenship and negative economic trends cannot be said to be democratic -which historical consensus has agreed to be the best system - however imperfect it may be. In view of such, a democratic government in its bid to keep up the ideals of government for the people, by the people and of the people have to ensure that small businesses thrive by ensuring that business environments are conducive for local industries private or public because it is the right thing to do and that is what the voters who put them in power expect.
