  1. And for women, dark jeans or a skirt, nice top, and a blazer is probably fine. Good walking boots if it's snowy! I had packed dress pants and realized that the only snow shoes I had were bean boots in a totally non-coordinating color. Oops. Also, there's often a student party that I assume is more casual.
  2. COME ON HOPKINS. (I had a phone interview last friday and they said "within a week" so...it's that time!)
  3. Congrats everyone!! I love how supportive this thread is! So, I have interests in political and critical theory and comp. lit, and after I was rejected from my Rhetoric program, I started focusing on my political theory programs and have had some great admits. The result is that, speaking to professors, I've learned a lot more about the overlap between political theory and english faculty and coursework, which is exciting! With that in mind, I'm deciding between Brown, UChicago, Yale, UCLA, and Michigan (with a few more choices still pending)--perhaps there is a chance some of us will be classmates after all )))
  4. I've been accepted to Brown! University email to check ApplyWeb, where a letter was posted with some funding information (but not complete)....so far no news from the department.
  5. emergency happy: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m52z86Kfv91r79k32.gif
  6. I'm convinced this is the ideal post-rejection gif, and I'm just going to leave it here: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m52z86Kfv91r79k32.gif
  7. Congrats! (and thumbs up for critical theory ) I'm in at Michigan as well! On another note, I really hope Hopkins notifies soon!!!!
  8. Also out at Columbia. I'm happy for those of you who've received happy news! I'm certainly in no position to complain overall
  9. Hey everyone! I was sadly rejected from Berkeley Rhetoric, which, as some of you know, means I'm officially going to be pursuing a degree in political theory--hopefully at a program which is extremely amenable to interdisciplinary and literary work. I have some wonderful options already and am still waiting on five other decisions. All in all, academia has been good to me this week. I think I'll probably take a break from this message board while I process it all, so I just wanted to say thank you for the support. Congratulations and sympathy all around, as the case may be. Keep reading .
  10. Thank you, and same to you!! I feel like the lucky one--goes without saying!
  11. I'm in too! Lovely emails from Davide Panagia, Melvin Rogers, and Joseph Brown! Not sure yet what I'll do, because I'm also in at Chicago and waiting on Columbia and Hopkins, among others, but it's a great problem to have! Congratulations and sympathy, as the case may be, all around
  12. In at UCLA! Wh-hoo!
  13. It's the "We’d be proud to have you join us as part of our incoming cohort of graduate students" part that seems most indicative! But then the rest of it is unclear.... Is your online status changed? I guess call them--but either way, this can't be bad! And what a cool change from the usual visiting weekend...
  14. I don't think there is anything wrong with saying something like "I know that your Committee is still in the process of making a decision, but I did want to reach out about [x] conference since it's coming up soon, and I know how tight conference scheduling can be!" Make it about wanting to respect their logistical constraints, rather than framing it as a complaint ("even though you haven't gotten back to me yet and are basically being suuuuuper slow and ruining my life") haha.
  15. This is unofficial, but I've heard through the grapevine that it will be by the end of the week...
  16. ^ welcome back! I just bought chocolate chips, butter, sugar, and whiskey. oh and a gluten free pizza crust. no particular destination in mind--ideas welcome, with the caveat that you must use at least 4/5 ingredients. Does anyone else play the time-zone negotiation game with yourself? It's only 8 PM here, which means it's still 5PM in Berkeley, which is still kind of part of the work day...etc ad inf.
  17. The Admissions Autopilot.
  18. Capricorn's forecast looks pretty hopeful! This month will bring lots of good news, and most of it will be about money. The month opens with a full moon, February 3, in Leo 15 degrees. Because the full moon will conjoin Jupiter, you may hear news that puts a big smile on your face - the amount of the check due you seems quite substantial and more than you ever expected to see. Uranus will be prominent at the full moon, indicating whatever comes to you will be a surprise. In lieu of a check, someone may give you a beautiful, valuable gift. Your eighth house of other people's money will be brought into play, so alternatively, the money you see may be a commission, bonus, generous university financial aid or scholarship, an inheritance, insurance payout, or tax refund
  19. Quite literally my reaction. *FINGERS CROSSED*
  20. Hey, thanks and nice to meet you We have a similar interest in the origins of modernity and, it sounds like, the ways in which ancient thought is invoked and used by modern thinkers! Chicago just hired a few new theorists who focus on ancient political theory and philosophy, which is exciting. Do you read in Greek?
  21. I've been listening to a lot of Darlingside--very soothing! And the newish Hozier album and/or Pink Floyd for the angstier moments.
