2016 Canadian SLP Thread

Hello everyone, I hope you guys are all finishing up your applications and you guys had a great holiday! I was wondering if we should do a brief summing up of our applications, and which programs we applied to. I know I found it very useful looking back on past forums and what successful applicants had, or what those not accepted were missing. SubGPA: 3.75 Volunteer: 200+ hours in LTC, private therapy, hospitals, schools, SLP summer camps, and 2 research labs. References: Academic references I'm sure were not spectacular.. both professors knew me quite well as I often go to office hours but I'm sure these were still standard Professional References: Two professional references from two fantastic SLP's. Both were incredibly kind, supportive and gave great advice! I am actually confident about these haha Schools Applied: U of T and Western..But hoping for U of T Worries: Sub GPA, I did great in the pre-req courses though and I hope they take that into account. If I don't get in I will probably take two extra courses and that should bump me up into the 3.8 range. Times Applied Previously: 0 -

Hey all, I think I am read to press the submit button for my application, I was just wondering about when you review and submit, after it shows my volunteer experience it says : This information was provided in Experiences: No information provided This information was provided in Awards and Scholarships: No information provided I just want to make sure there really is no where to enter these things? -

Just to follow this up...it seems this is in the handbook Where grades must be extracted from a term to achieve the equivalent of 10 full courses, the average of that term (e.g., your second year) will be used. -

wow I never knew about this ! Itd be nice if they write this somewhere. Did you hear it from someone cause its not on website. I took a course in the summer that would count so does that mean they are going to take my fall winter and summer marks and take the average ?? So confused now !! -

Hello, Thank you so much for the response, it is nice to know I am not alone in feeling this way..disheartening is really the perfect word for it. I am applying for backups as well because if I don't get in I don't think I can afford to spend the same amount of money/time especially since I know it usually is GPA related which means taking more courses that I do not need. Just the fact that all that and your application doesn't even get looked at because you got a couple of B+'s. Sometimes it just turns me off from the profession in general. But, on the positive note I know that I had done everything I could and in the end maybe SLP is just not for me! I am ready to take on that moment, so I can finally move on. I sound like I am breaking up with a boyfriend! Thank you so much Lindz!! However, who knows this time around! I am crossing my fingers for you. Which schools are you applying to?? -

I think a 3.7 is 80% and a 3.72 is 82%... I am not entirely sure though. -

I have a kind of personal question for people.. has anyone fallen out of love with SLP? I have worked for it for 3 years and now that I am getting my applications together I am just having a real bitterness about it all (mainly the focus on grades, I think if you are above 80% that is an achievement of itself and your application should at least be looked at not thrown out in the garbage, which I have heard is the case) . The non consistent hours, salary based on clients specifically. job market in my area (toronto), and speaking to speech language pathologists who are unsatisfied and scared of the careers longevity, over saturation . Has anyone felt this way? I think I may just be getting nervous for applications because it only began now, but I find it very sad if I am truly falling out of love with this profession -

Your SubGPA is amazing! I have heard mixed things. Some people do get in with the minimum hours and stellar GPA but some do not. I would suggest doing as much volunteer as you possibly can. If you can only do 14 then okay, but if you feel you can do more then go for it. I would also suggest getting experience with both children and adults. -

Can someone explain to me how the volunteer hours are listed in the application? Do you have to provide an explanation as to your duties? Thanks -

The earlier the better.. I am also starting to freak out about applications. My main concern is my subGPA, as I am only applying to U of T and I know they are very concerned with GPA. It'll be in the A- range most likely, but I have heard that that is not enough. My pre req GPA however is 3.88. My volunteer experiences have been really enjoyable. I've had experience with Aphasia, TBI, Autism, and am currently doing some accent addition. I have experience with adults and pediatrics. I also take part in 2 labs, one speech related, and one deals with child cognition. I have been following these forums for a while now and it is so great to freak out with people! I'll be applying to other programs as well, so that makes one big swing at SLP for me I was wondering what the application looked like? When you list your volunteer experience, are you able to give an explanation as to what you did ? Or is it just your title and # of hours? -

You can take a different course of the same equivalence, but the old course that you want to replace will remain on your transcript either way because it would still be in your subGPA calculation. The only difference I can see this making is if it bumps out the entire year that that mark is in. -

Does this make sense to anyone? If a course is repeated, and both the original course and the repeated course are within the last 20 half courses, then the grades from both courses will be included in the GPA calculation. If you did poorly in a course in first year and then took it again in fourth year, then only the fourth year mark would count towards your GPA. I do not get how this is logical. So generally if you want to redo a course that is affecting your last 10 full courses, don't bother. Has anyone endured this? My friend spent a year redoing a couple of courses only to find this out. That was money down the drain! -

Was it from your first year? Apparently theyll be more understanding if it was. -

Would you be willing to retake the class? The only thing is that I think it will take a year to process it. So you'd have to retake the class, then apply for the following year afterward -
