I applied for an English teaching position in China. It would be for 1 year if I got it. It doesn't pay much, but it's enough. Since I've gotten rejected by most of my grad programs and funding for the one that I have gotten into is weak, China might be a good option if I get an offer.

I'm interested in if/how people categorize animals in terms of edibility mainly. I want to cuddle pandas too There's actually a prof at UNC-Chapel Hill who studies panda-human stuff, but I didn't apply there.

Does anyone know anything about this program? Its reputation? Is it "good?" Most of my peers haven't heard of it.

I'd be open to also living outside of "The Village" if it meant less in loans.

Hi. I got into a MA anthropology program with 25% funding. I don't have really any money saved up at the moment, so I'd have to borrow a hunk of money for tuition and living expenses. Is there affordable housing in "The Village?" I'm from a small village of around 3,000 people in the Midwest.

Okay, so I got into a MA anthropology program with 25% of tuition covered by the program. It's located in NYC, so Idk if this is the best financial decision....thoughts?

The New School for Social Research - the letter didn't say anything about who I'd be working with, but I hope to work with Hugh Raffles on human-animal stuff.

I would say that if your profs think that you are competitive, then you are.

Just because we don't get in anywhere doesn't mean that we are not competitive. I've been told by numerous faculty that I am competitive.

That's not what I meant! I think you're right. Whatever happens will happen for a reason. That's how I'm trying to think about it. There's a crap ton of reasons why I could have been rejected. My top choice program isn't taking cultural apps for this year, so I retracted my app there. Maybe next year will be a lucky year!

Why is anthropology in particular competitive? Also, it's SUPER hard not to compare myself to my peers who are getting into awesome places. One of my peers got into the anthro PhD program at Brown and I envy her.

Ditto on the "oh, you're going to get in!" and "Actually...I might not." All of a sudden this is being humble? This is the reality for a lot of applicants and it's looking more and more like that for me as time goes on.

Checked one of my online apps and I got rejected to another place

I didn't apply to PhD programs for no reason, though. I have a research question that I want to explore. I have independent ethnographic research under my belt in three countries, and I know a couple of foreign languages. I have teaching experience and I've written funded proposals. My professors have told me that I am "well-qualified." My institution is known for producing many anthro PhDs. I honestly think that I could handle the workload because I've talked to a couple of alumni from my school who recently got their PhDs in anthropology at Princeton. They said that their workload there was LESS than what it was when they were undergrads, mostly because they took many courses with a particular professor who's trying to make a "mini Chicago" out of our school. I've taken a couple of courses with this professor and they have been my favorite courses. I don't doubt that it will be a LOT of hard work, but it's the kind of stuff that I like doing. I'm used to a heavy reading load and I like doing it. At least 25 pages of reading per class per week? It's better than a book per class per week.

lol YES!!! I'm ashamed of myself. All of my friends who applied to grad programs have gotten into AT LEAST one place w/funding. I feel like a failure. I actually applied to a teaching position in China, so we'll see if anything happens with that.

At this point, I'm asking myself "what the heck am I doing with my life?!"
