  1. Alternate for Calgary and Ottawa meaning I probably won't get it
  2. Just curious, if you hold OGS you can still hold your scholarship/s in its entirety right? Or is that wholly dependent on the individual schools rules?
  3. Okay cool thanks guys! 5 more mins until CGS.. very nervous/excited
  4. Is OGS also April 1st? Haven't heard anything on that front at all...
  5. Is Acadia accredited by CPA??
  6. So sorry I hope you'll have better luck next year, and believe me a lot of it has to do with luck! What are your backup plans?
  7. My friend did this, although it's quite difficult with all the logistics involved and probably will set you back maybe a term or two its very possible. She was in the second term of her first year of MA and her and her supervisor were not getting along and she did not like the research area she was in. She informed her advisor and even met with the dean about what she could do, they said she could switch supervisors but not the area she was accepted into. She contacted a PI at another school and explained the situation etc. etc. and she applied the following year and got in and switched over, but was set back for her thesis because she had to start over again but not courses cause they carried over. I think it comes down to WHY you think its necessary to switch as to if it will make you look bad or not. As to how hard it is, it depends how far along you are in the current program, for her it was a lot easier cause it was only her first year, but if you're in like 3rd year PhD that would be quite a lot more difficult.
  8. This is okay, sometimes the people who update the online system do it before and stuff before the PI gets around to contacting you personally etc. this happened to me as well for one of the school I was sent an email saying congrats blah blah in the middle of the night and then a few days later PI called me and received personal email from dept. head like a week later so I wouldn't worry.
  9. Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I really appreciate it. I think that perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself but, I just don't want a repeat of 4th year undergrad, and since I will be in this program for the next 5 - 6 years I want to make sure that I'm not excluding myself and can find other ways of socializing/making friends within my program. I will definitely take up on all the suggestions and if that doesn't really work out (eg. most of my cohort are younger and go out every Friday to drink together or something) I will most probably join some clubs/organization on campus to stay involved. I've discussed this with other people in my position and generally, the same overall question is brought up - how to navigate and stay involved in typical campus life without undermining your own beliefs/lifestyle? And its a difficult one, most people usually end up sticking to people who are like them and not really interacting outside of school with the people who do those things, of course thats okay but, I'm sure there's other ways of getting around it without having to totally disengage.
  10. Okay, so graduate school cohorts are generally quite small, one generally get to know eachother well enough, and become friends with or at least get to hang out sometimes outside of school related settings etc., from what I've gathered. In my field, at least where I live, the 'typical' graduate student by in large go out for drinks at bars/pubs together, perhaps stay out quite late, maybe party ever so often, date, and generally live alone or with roommates. I would like to make new friends in the school I'm going to for grad school in Sept. but, I do not drink, have to be home (live with my family) at a certain time, am from a minority religion, do not date, and wear a headscarf. This may seem irrelevant to many people but, I am worried that I will ostracize myself from my fellow grad students in my program since I'm unable to socialize with them in the setting/manner that a typical grad student would. I've had this issue in upper year undergrad where my interactions with fellow students were reduced to simply work/school related conversations since I was unable to go out to the bars/pubs/parties/settings that I would be invited to to get to know them on a more personal/friendly level. I have friends, but all of them are outside of school and I would like to be more integrated into the school/program community and environment. My question is, how can I still be involved with & become friends with my fellow grad students without ostracizing myself for not being able to do the things that typical grad students do to make friends/hang out/get to know eachother? Just FYI, before people say 'well go out with them and just don't drink' in my religion and to a certain extent my culture we're not supposed to really be in a vicinity where the main purpose of it is to drink there eg. pubs and bars and it makes me uncomfortable being in those environments. Any feedback would be appreciated
  11. A university in Canada is equivalent to college in USA and a college in Canada is equivalent to a community college in USA. In terms of Clinical or counselling specifically, if you want to become a licensed counselling psychologist or a clinical psychologist, I would go to a 4 year university and build up your research experience in labs on that campus, do a thesis, go to conferences, get some publications etc. then apply to a MA or PhD program. That's really your best bet to get into a counselling or clinical program in Canada, they are very competitive so starting off in university right away is probably your best option. On the other hand, if you want to work as a counsellor like in mental health or in education you could take a few courses in college then transfer over to university and not focus as much on the research aspect, but at the end of the day all graduate schools here require a bachelors in some form as a minimum admissions requirement so it probably would serve you best to start off in university either way.
  12. This may be a silly idea and question but, perhaps someone who's already attending or has been through this can shed light if this is even possible. My top choice programs funding is not all that great my second choice funding package is quite good for the same program. Is it possible to tell my top choice that the other school offered me more funding and that makes their school more appealing to me and they may match it? Or are these funding packages pretty much set in stone? Both programs are in clinical psych in Canadian schools if that makes any difference.
  13. Yes I looked at that site and it seems as if it only applies to schools in the USA not Canada!
  14. Yes it means the average over the last 10 full or 20 half courses or a mixture of both.. at least for me it was since some of my courses were full year and some were just one semester.
  15. Generally speaking UofT has a WAY better reputation than York does, UofT is internationally recognized as one of the top schools in Canada ... a lot more opportunities and better programs overall and in my opinion reputation of the school is important more so at the graduate level than undergrad. Also, their SCCP program is only one of two CPA accredited programs like it which means it is a very high calibre program area and it is well recognized. For me if I got those two offers it would be a no brainer, the competition for the SCCP program is absolutely ridiculous and the popularity of it I think speaks volumes about what kind of program it is. I haven't actually heard that Yorks program was *the best* really ever in comparison to others also there's better funding and is in a better location for UofT. But, truly at the end of the day, you said that OISE is a better fit for you in terms of research and clinical population and for me that is what my decision would come down to ..'can I see myself here doing this work for x amount of years?' And also, congrats on both offers thats truly an amazing accomplishment!
  16. Is the CGS Masters application process the same as the doctoral one or for even external applicants? Because from my understanding of CGS at least this year it's up to the institutions you put on your application that decide if they will offer you SSHRC at that specific institution not one singular committee decides anymore. I put 5 schools on my application and my application was sent to them, they make their own decisions as to who they will award it to. I got an email from one of the institutions saying my application will be forwarded but if that specific school awards it to me and I decide not to attend their school I have to forfeit the award and they will offer it to the next person... Am I getting this wrong because this is what I've been told by numerous people?
  17. That's really awesome is that in clinical? I know that OISE SCCP (MA) mails their admissions package, my friend told me that her POI said the package was being sent out today or Monday so probably in a weeks time. But, also I've heard that OISE is notorious for taking their sweet time with decisions so I wouldn't hold my breath
  18. What's the funding like from York in comparison to OISE? My friend got accepted to the SCCP program unofficially from phone call by her POI
  19. I got accepted into 3 programs thus far and all of them say I have to give them a response by some deadline in March (basically one month to decide) so that's why I'm concerned/confused because I would obviously want to know before deciding if I got CGS or OGS which would impact my decision. And I thought that the programs would have put the deadlines of acceptances after April 1st as well knowing that the external funding offers go out that day.... I guess I'll just have to take the offer with the best internal funding and hope for the best ... I'm wondering if anyone else is running into this issue?
  20. They're just asking to share your application details like your GPA publications conferences experience so that other people may know what they need to do to get an offer...not asking you to share personal information and from what I know OISE is a better more reputable program from what Ive heard
  21. I think that generally clinical programs prefer clinical psychologists and that experimental programs prefer experimental psychologists.. at least that's what I've seen in programs in Canada mostly.
  22. Hey, I was just wondering if anyone knows when we find out if we are the recipient of OGS (Ontario Graduate Scholarship) or CGS (SSHRC) for Masters? Are applicants actually expected to accept/reject an offer at a school before they know if they were the recipient of either one?
  23. Thanks you guys!!! Also just FYI my friend got a call from her POI today to let her know she got accepted to OISE School & Clinical Child Psych.
  24. People who applied to uOttawa, contact your POIs they should unofficially know by now if you will get an offer or not! My POI just let me know that I will be getting one
  25. POI emailed me and informed me that the admissions committee for uOttawa Clinical Program is meeting today! Good luck everyone!
