  1. So if it follows the guidelines of NASP but isn't formally approved program (eg. a Canadian program) can you still get a job as a school psychologist in the USA?
  2. Ya usually around an 80-85% is usually sufficient they say you need at least a 75% but knowing that a lot of people apply I highly doubt anyone with lower than an 80 would get in but you need an 85% to get an entrance scholarship if that's something you were looking into.
  3. For uottawa most of those 60 are M.ed students not MA students they only take maybe 20 MA students per year depending on which supervisors are available that year. I know this year a few of the profs are on sabatical or can't take on another student.
  4. I applied to the MA in Educational Counselling at uOttawa is that the one you're talking about? I called the education dept and they said takes 4-6 weeks sometimes 8 so we'll probably hear back by mid March! Which program at uOttawa did you apply for?
  5. I know that the references and statement are for the POIs to aid in making decisions on who they put first second etc. The stronger the refs the more likely they will put you first. I think it also may simply serve as a preliminary review before passing them to the POIs because this ranking system is only when the POIs send in the applications of the people they want. A lot of applications don't even get to the POIs desks due to incompleteness, negative refs, not high enough GPA etc..maybe?
  6. They posted the new ranking system for uOttawa clinical, here it is: http://socialsciences.uottawa.ca/sites/default/files/public/psy/eng/documents/ranking_grid_2014-12.pdf
  7. My friend just did her interview with OISE for School & Clinical Child Psych program. The interview IS NOT an informal process. This is a new thing that they started this year. The dept. gives the POIs questions that they have to ask the applicant they are interested in and also have their own questions that they ask. The ad com. shortlists applicants using a ranking system the ones that get through that process they pass them along to the POIs the applicant put on their application. After the POIs interview the applicants they are interested in at their discretion, they send off 1 or 2 names BACK TO THE ad com. where they again rank the applicants based on the recommendations of the POIs based on being ranked one or two and based on the ORIGINAL rank they were in the beginning and lets say the POIs send back 15 names and they can only accept 8 the ones who the ad com rank the highest get an offer. Hope this information was helpful, she said that she will hear back from them sometime in March, I know that's very vague but the POI was not sure herself when the ad com is going to sit down again.
  8. Yes, you can ONLY hold the award at the institution that awarded it to you AND where you got an acceptance. For example, you applied to school A and B and applied for tri council for both those schools. School A awarded you tri council but no acceptance, school B didn't award you tri-council but offered you acceptance, you have to forfeit your tri-council at school A because you didn't get an offer.. so you can't go there and they will offer it to someone else down their list who accepts it that will attend as well.
  9. Yes, the tri-council policies/rules have changed in recent years now you can only hold the scholarship at the institution that awarded it to you whereas before it was transferable from school to school. Now it isn't anymore because each school assess each application and awards it to people separately whereas before your one application went to your home school and you were given the award and could bring it with you to whatever school you decide to attend. But, this has its benefits since before you only had ONE chance to get it now you have many, that's why it's always a good idea to apply for tri-council to as many schools as possible since you get that many more chances increasing the probability you will get it at at least one school.
  10. OISE School & Clinical Child Psych is starting to interview. Friend received a invite to interview on Friday VIA Skype. Good luck everyone!
  11. This might sound ignorant but what can you do with a masters or PhD in experimental psych other than be an academic researcher as a prof of some sort?
  12. What's so special about the Ryerson program? Why is a lot of people interested/concerned about it specifically in comparison to others?
  13. Anyone on here apply to Canadian programs, seems to be a lack of Canadian school psych. applicants on here
  14. My POI at uOttawa said that the deadline for supervisors submit choices to the committee is February 18th. She also said that the commitee meets at the end of February to review applications but they have not set a date yet. She already interviewed me prior to the deadline of the application so I'm not worried about not getting an invite, but good luck to everyone else! And also the interviews are individually set by the supervisor its not dept. wide or anything like that.
  15. This isn't entirely true, there are big differences between US and canadian schools it's actually more dependent on the school you're applying to and the program. Most experimental programs you start in masters and have to apply to phd after. Some clinical programs are MA/PhD, uottawa is like that. Some are only PhD programs for clinical and some start in masters and you get bumped to phd after first year. Likewise same thing with POIs, some programs don't even require you to contact anyone prior to applying because you get accepted first than get matched with a supervisor later most aren't like that though. But most terminal masters programs, eg like professional ones like the M.ed you don't have a supervisor at all throughout the program but you can't apply to phd after with it.
  16. The wait sometimes is almost unbearable... it's just this constant thing on the back of your mind always until you hear something
  17. I know most of everyone on this thread is applying to American schools but I thought it would be worth posting incase someone on here applied to uCalgary for MSc School & Applied Child Psychology program I was informed by the grad admin that all apps have now been sent off for review and we will hear back by the end of February at the latest.
  18. If I wasn't the same ethnicity as the group they are interested in researching I doubt I would have been half as interesting to them as I am now, as I stated it gives some authenticity to the research if 'one of their own' is doing it. And I'm basing my requirements on the minimum requirements which I do far exceed, as most people do, again like I said most applicants exceed the requirements but what allowed me to stand out was my background.
  19. Yes I think this is very much true, I don't have any inside knowledge but, to be quite honest from personal experience I can tell that small details such as gender and ethnicity can influence the chances of acceptance. For me, I'm interested in cross-cultural psychology and immigrant and refugees in Canada of those of mostly Arab or East-Asian decent. The POIs I've approached who research this area, all but one all of their students were of Anglophone backgrounds, the POIs showed little or interest in me (I say this because emails were short and generic, phone calls were short and not that polite) until they inquired about my background and linguistic abilities. When it became clear to them that not only was I of the ethnicity of the general population they were interested in but I also speak the language they wanted to interact with participants they were interested in studying all of a sudden I was at the top of their list of students to pick. Now, I'm not saying this is the sole and only reason I became interesting to them at least I truly hope so since I worked my butt off to get to this point and I far exceed all the admissions requirements but since me being of the same ethnic/cultural and linguistic background as the population of interest this created perhaps an aura of authenticity vs someone else who is an outsider looking in, this enabled me to be picked from the batch in terms of POIs pick of students I think
  20. Just to people who are applying to uOttawa, the process is the same as in Ryerson. I spoke extensively with my POI about this. She said that profs with seniority and profs with few grad students/smaller labs get ranked highly for a clinical student. She told me directly that she will be ranked highly to be able to get a student next year as she has seniority and only has 2 students. So not only does the applicant have to be matched with their POI - the POI put their name first or second and the applicant put their POI first or second to be even looked at by the committee, they also have to have their POI ranked in up until x for them to get a student that year not to mention even if the applicant is matched AND the POI is ranked highly, the applicant ALSO has to be ranked up until x by the committee for them to get an offer. So keeping all this in mind its mind-blowing how difficult it is to get an acceptance.
  21. Hm, I'm not sure what OGS application you were filling out but the OGS application for uOttawa Clinical most definitely required a research proposal it said this: "Provide your research/program statement in the space provided (a bibliography is optional and if you chose to include one it must be included in this space)" But, nonetheless this is accurate, different schools/programs ask different things in their OGS application in terms of what they are looking for. Still waiting on any status for uOttawa, McGill, uCalgary, and U of T
  22. Epoh, I'm interested in understanding how Canadian students can afford to go to graduate school in USA considering how expensive it is.. what is your plan? I've looked into some of the schools but all of them require you to show proof of financial support for one year PRIOR to acceptance, which obviously is quite difficult since its around 20-30k per year?
  23. I would suggest calling them on Monday to make sure they got all your forms since that is the last day, but I honestly wouldn't worry about it if you sent it all in in one package. Is uOttawa your top choice?
  24. That's awesome! I go to Carleton as well in the forensic stream for undergrad, so we've probably have ran into eachother at some point as the forensic psych students community is pretty exclusive . Are you not applying to uOttawa? I think that is where I have the best chance as I've met with POI twice (the second time she invited me to come meet her and really went out of her way to ensure that I met her again) and got her grad students to help me with my application. So, I'm pretty sure she will put me first and I will put her first, admissions committee is where I'm most concerned at this point as I feel my app will look like crap in comparison to an MA student applying.
  25. Are you doing your undergrad at Carleton? Only place I can think of that does experimental forensic that's close enough to also be at CSC? What are your stats like now in comparison to before?
