  1. I think it depends on the person, their previous background, and their age. I've heard that a lot of schools do not even look at the volunteer/extracurricular stuff. I have teaching experience (both here and overseas), research experience, taught first aid/cpr classes, etc... I don't think that any of it is going to really help me accept (maybe) my work with kids that are on the spectrum.
  2. Did anyone apply to UWEC? Any idea when we will hear if we have been invited for an interview? I know someone that got an invitation to interview around this time last year.
  3. What school did you apply to and get the acceptance letter? Have you called them?
  4. Thanks, I did not find any certified distance School Psych programs, either. Was not sure about School Counseling. I don't mind doing the practicum work. I actually would find that part very interesting. The problem is that even with a 3.9 GPA, many people are being turned away from Speech Pathology. I have the 3.9 and decent GRE scores, I just feel that I need a plan B because of how competitive it has become. The practicum does not bother me. I can do that wherever we live. Is there a thread for School Counseling? Thanks.
  5. Does anyone know of any School Psychology of School Counseling programs that are distance learning with full accredidation? My husband is in the navy and things are too unpredictable to chance being separated more than the navy already dictates. I have a teaching background and almost a second bachelors in Speech Pathology.I enjoy the one on one aspect of working with children and teenagers.
  6. international teaching, tutoring, relevant volunteer work, research experience, shadowing
  7. A lot of people like post bac programs at Utah State, CSUN and Chapman. There are a lot of good ones out there. University of Wisconsine Eau Claire has one as well. Utah State has a lot of people that get into graduate programs and many of them use the distance learning professors as letter/recommendation writers.
  8. Anyone know how they calculate a second bachelor's? What if the second Bachelor's has not been conferred yet? So far, I only have an application into CSUN's distance-learning program. I'm looking at some CSDCAS schools as well, but those deadlines come a little later. I'm trying to stick with schools that will look more at the last sixty units and pre-req classes in CSD.
  9. Who all applied to California State University Northridge? Best of luck to everyone! It's one of the first deadlines in the long application season. One down, five more to do--if not more...
  10. Are any of those distance learning?
  11. I'm taking five classes this upcoming semester and all of the professors are telling me how challenging it is going to be. I will not be working and can just focus on school. Is it just that difficult? I've taken five classes at brick and mortar schools, so not sure why there is the push to not take five classes. Insight, anyone?
  12. Does anyone know of any full-time distance learning programs? From what I have gathered, Western Kentucky has a program that can be completed in two years and some change, but the rest are part-time programs. Part-time is still a viable option, but I'm also interested and getting it completed at a faster pace. I have looked on edfind, but thought someone might have knowledge of newer programs that are not on there yet. Thanks!!!
  13. That's great advice for people that are not in between schools.
  14. Yes, We could absolutely so a swap. Let me know when you want to trade. I have been working on mine and think my revised version is better, but it's still in the beginning stages.
  15. I think it comes down to the question of whether you are going to use it as a plan b. Do you have scholarships that will pay for this undertaking? If you're not wanting ESL as a potential career, would you be better off volunteering at an ESL center? I'm not trying to talk you out of it, just curious about the reasoning. Depending on where you live, you could get diversity experience from tutoring, or volunteering with different organizations. I taught ESL and other core subjects at the high school level-- there's some correlation but as this is my first time applying, I am not banking on those skills getting me into graduate school. If money and time is not an issue, then go for it.
  16. OndaySLP that would be great. Should I sent it to your inbox on here? Thank you so much!
  17. Thanks, I do have people that will look at the final drafts. You bring up a good point. I will look into the writing center.
  18. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to look at and offer feedback on my personal statement. I do not feel comfortable just cutting and pasting in in the forum; however, I would be happy to private message or email it to anyone. There are about seven questions they want answered and I could use some input on how to better arrange the content. Thanks everyone!
  19. That sounds good. Give me a couple of weeks to do a few drafts and I will private message you.
  20. This is my first time applying to schools. The next few weeks I will be writing and rewriting my personal statement. Once my essay/s have gone through several drafts, is there anyone that is willing to read it and give feedback? I'm a decent writer, but keep seeing the importance of the personal statement and want to make it as succinct as possible. I would also consider an essay swap with people. Thanks in advance.
  21. Thank you for your post! Many of us are going through this process for the first time and your candid post demystifies everything, a little.
  22. Thanks! That was a good suggestion to email the programs. So far, I've heard that my scores "were in the ballpark."
  23. Thanks, that's a good idea. I really don't want to spend the money to take it again. It's just hard to know when I see so many people that have scores in the 160s and 4.0 GPA's.
  24. I know there is always a lot of talk about GRE scores. I am considering taking the GRE again and thought I would try to get some opinions. I feel like my scores are mediocre. Verbal 153, Quantitative 144 and AW-4.5. I'm doing a post-bac program and have seven classes under my belt with a 3.9 GPA. I am not really wanting to take the test again, but if it is necessary I should start studying now. Thanks.
  25. I'm in California and finishing up pre-reqs. I entered the ASHA Ethic's contest on a whim. Did anyone else enter the competition, or have an knowledge about it? I'm just wondering if they have already notified the winners. Thanks!
