Awesome! I double majored in phil and comm as an undergrad and did an MA focused on phil. I always thought I was going to be a philosopher, but within the last semester I decided to move into comm/rhetoric. Which is funny since I'm currently finishing up my thesis in straight up analytic epistemology. I'm interested in minority dialogue, philosophy of rhetoric (especially epistemic rhetoric) and rhetoric of science and religion. What are your specific interests? I thought about it, but the same thing that turned you off to Pitt turned me off to Duquesne. I had two phone interviews scheduled with them and they never followed through either time. At Pitt on the other hand I had a 2:30 hour long conversation with my prospective POI. By the by, are you going to the phil of comm conference in Pitt later this semester?

Here's a current schedule of courses: http://webs.wichita.edu/depttools/depttoolsmemberfiles/registrar/Courses/spring/Spring%202015%20Dec9%20updated.pdf The comm courses are on page 32. Anything above a 500 level can be taken for graduate credit. There are also obviously a lot of other course that can be taken as well that are not offered this semester. You might just shoot an e-mail to the director of the graduate program Lisa Parcell. -

You might consider some other types of MA comm programs outside of those you listed. I went to Wichita State and have found that there was a lot of focus on the areas you mentioned. The classes have a very hands on approach. As far as money goes, the funding situation is a lot better than at the schools you mentioned. In addition, all of our "Ph.D" minded peeps got into their first choice program this year, so the program does seem to place well. And I don't think the deadline has passed yet for next year. But I might be wrong. -
Teaching Tips

I honestly don't think 95% of the students we get really know the differences between professors, lecturers and GTAs. I think I've had one student ask me whether I was a lecturer or a GTA. Thankfully, it was during the summer when I was officially a "lecturer." -
Thanks! I think the three things that counted most positively for me were 1) I contacted several professors at USC and had phone convos with them last semester, 2) I have extremely good fit with at least two or three professors there and 3) I'm very interdisciplinary, that is, I've taken a lot of graduate philosophy and history courses. But I wouldn't have predicted an acceptance at USC, I'm just super blessed and thankful. Best of luck with your applications!
