I just got accepted into Baylor Online August 2021 cohort. I was wondering if anyone already in the program could tell me how it is and what to expect! I am working so I was wondering what the class times look like and such. Thank you in advance. Super excited! Also, anyone else in this cohort?

    Hi! Congrats on being accepted!!

I'm currently in the May 2021 cohort at Speech@Baylor. Classes are offered in afternoons and evenings. You have asynchronous assignments due the day before your live classes, but they are doable :) Working is doable as well. I'm on the part-time track so I am able to continue working full-time until I start my clinic placements.

Message me if you have more questions!

  2. Hi! I think it's important to have a balance of school, work, and extracurricular activities. Getting into a grad program in California is extremely competitive, but that does not mean it is impossible. I have some friends from my undergrad program including myself who got into grad school who did not have a 3.9 CSD GPA. It depends on where you apply, the program's application process/review, who writes your recommendation letters, and your personal statement. I graduated in 6 years, I chose that route because it helped me long-term prepare for my major courses. I took 2 CSD courses each semester and that worked for me. I got into an online program with a 3.3 CSD GPA (3.6 last 60 units-so I made that clear in my essay) with below average GRE scores. My story shows you don't need super high grades/stats to get into grad school.

I believe CSD advisors wouldn't recommend double majoring because CSD is a rigorous program and it requires a lot of time, dedication, and preparation for graduate-level courses. I'm sure it has been done, I'm not trying to discourage you. Minoring in gerontology is great! Also know your limits. You don't want to spread yourself thin and your grades and your health suffering as a result. I think if you have a game plan and stay on top of all your school work (double-major or not), you'll be okay!

Graduating in 4.5 years will not look bad to a graduate committee. I graduated in 6 years lol..They will focus on your application itself (grades/transcripts, GRE scores, essays, recommendation letters).

If you choose to double-major, good luck and stay on top of everything! Start your stuff early :)

Let me know if you have questions!!

  3. Hello everyone! I'm starting grad school in a week (summer start) and I'm wondering how current and past graduate students do with note-taking? I tried typing notes in class one semester during undergrad and it didn't work out for me (slow typer and I don't type "properly" lol). I've been a pen to paper kid, but I'm curious about using an iPad and pen. 3/4 of my textbooks are ebooks this term since it was the cheapest route. One thing I would like to do is write on the pages of my ebooks. I also want to mention I'm a part-time student, 2 classes per term.

Looking forward to reading your experiences, etc :)

You don't have to belittle someone's negative experiences. Just because they aren't fond of a program that you like doesn't make their experiences any less. As a future SLP you should be more empathetic to another person's experience even if it doesn't coincide with what you believe. Imagine if the admissions committee saw you making such hurtful comments to another person.

    THIS ?

This is just a word of warning to any applicants to stay away from Chapman University's graduate school program. As a current graduate student of this program, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this program. The lack of support or basic human empathy from certain members of the administration, lack of opportunities to support career goals, and lack of diversity has made my graduate experience a living hell. I do not have many regrets in life, but I do regret the amount of money (over $10,000 every trimester!!!), effort, time, and stress I have wasted in this program. In essence, please literally go anywhere else.

Good for you for talking about your experiences and warning others! One of my close friends had a friend/classmate who went to Chapman for their master's program and said they were not happy with their experience.

Hey! I just received an invitation to interview and wanted to ask how the interview process was for you (especially since it was online)? Anything you suggest that I look into in terms of preparing for the interview?

Hi! Congratulations on getting an interview! Everything is virtual. We completed a 30-minute writing sample (camera's on) where we received prompts in the chat, wrote the essay on a word document, and emailed it to the admissions counselor. We were called in groups of 3 doing individual interviews. They give you 15 minutes. It was relaxed and the professors want to get to know you and what inspires you to pursue a career as an SLP. I'd prepare a list of questions to help you prep and questions for them as well.

Good luck!! Be confident and own it :)

Interview season for the master's program has officially started! I had an interview about 3 weeks ago and have 2 more coming up within the next few weeks.

    • What are some questions you were asked or what tips/advice can you give the rest of us?
    • If you had a group interview, what was the dynamic or what do professions expect from applicants?
    • If you had a spontaneous writing sample, what was it about?

Thank you in advance and good luck to all!

Hi! Congrats on your interviews. I've completed 2 interviews and I was asked questions like "What made you want to pursue a career as an SLP?" and "Why do you want to attend ___ University." I recommend googling interview questions to start and work your way from there :) Definitely think about your answers beforehand and know what you want to share with those interviewing you. I had to complete a time writing sample as well. I had 2 options: write about a time you experienced failure or write about your experience working with diverse populations. Lastly. Be confident and own it!

Let me know if you have more questions!

Yay!! Congrats. Do you remember who interviewed you? So, I applied end of January and received my interview invite the next day. I scheduled my interview for February 14th. I have 2 friends from my undergrad who are currently 2nd years so they helped me with the interview process. My interview was in person, and there were 4 other applicants. There was a campus tour, presentation from Dr. Christensen, interview, then writing prompt. I was the first interview of the day and it went smoothly. One of my now professors walked me out and told me "I think you would be a great fit for this program!". I was called March 6th. I know some people waited 1-2 weeks and some 1 month.

I was a wreck waiting for the call. I have no tips for being calm haha

    Thanks! MacPherson and LaCroix :)

@Liza_Ann_92hey, I'm a first year at MWU Glendale. Let me know if you have any questions!! Good Luck

Hi! I had my interview on Friday. The whole interview day went pretty well! I was a part of the first group to be interviewed. The faculty who interviewed me were welcoming and asked me questions I was ready to answer lol.. I was kind of nervous, but I think it went well. I think I did okay on writing sample too. Overall, I walked away from the experience feeling positive :)

What was the interview process like for you and when did you find out about your admission status?

Hi, congrats on getting an interview!! I have not submitted my app for Midwestern yet. But I was wondering if you submitted a personal statement? I know it is optional for their program but I'm feeling like it would be best to do so anyways, so I was just wondering if you did.

    Thanks :)

Hi! I did submit a personal statement. I figured why not do it and see what happens lol :)

Hey, I'm a student at MWU. Definitely have a good understanding of what Speech and Language are together and separately. Other than that, have good examples of your experiences and show them you can speak to them as a person. My GRE scores and GPA were not strong at all, so you will do well. I had a lot of experience as an RBT and am trilingual which helped.

You will learn so much in this program!

Very awesome! Thanks for the tips :)

My GPA and GRE scores aren't anything to brag about. They're not strong but I plan to talk about my work and tie them into speech path.

  12. Hi everyone!

I received an invite to interview with MWU in Glendale. I'm excited since this is my second time applying. I was on the interview waitlist the first time and my GRE stats are higher now. What should I expect (questions, suggestions, advice) and what will help prepare me? The interview will be virtual, so it saves a trip to the school.

    Thank you :)

    transferring because of the pandemic

just wanted some opinions on the choices i made.

i’m from PA and got into chapman university out in orange california. it’s a great school and i love all the faculty, but bc of this pandemic everything has been online. i felt so isolated being 3,000 miles away from my family friends and boyfriend, and knew covid would prevent me from traveling for the holidays and what not. the feeling of isolation and unfamiliarity took a toll on my mental health so i’ve decided to withdraw from chapman at the end of my trimester on december 18th, and move back home. by the grace of god i got accepted into NYU online speech program which starts in jan, so i’m not really losing anything academically. i guess i’m just feeling kind of guilty about leaving chapman, but right now wasn’t the best time to relocate 3000 miles away from my home. thoughts?

I understand feeling isolated and loneliness takes a toll on one's well-being. You gotta do what is best for you. If I were in your shoes, I could see myself doing the same thing. Always put yourself first. You shouldn't feel guilty for putting your mental health etc first. Best of luck to you! Congrats on getting into the NYU online program :)

  14. I have a question for anyone who wants to help! Part of my essay prompt is to discuss potential challenges grad students may face in an environment of constant evolving technology. Want to know if I'm on the right track and my ideas are following the prompt. Private messages please.

    Thanks in advance :)

  15. Do you have to resend your college transcripts to CSDCAS if you previously applied using their system? I applied in 2018. Not sure if I need to do this. I have green checks on everything and I'm able to submit an application.

EDIT: I got my question answered!

  16. Hi! I just have a question for y'all.

I'm working on my personal statement. I'm thinking about including a small paragraph about my late grandmother. She became sick after I graduated with my bachelor's and me and my mother took care of her until she passed on a few years ago. She passed away while I was applying to grad schools for the first time. I decided to continue applying anyway. Honestly I wasn't in the best head space back then, but I'm doing a lot better overall now. Do you think it's relevant to include this in my essay? Would it take away from the whole thing? I know it's not related to the field, but it was an experience that made me stronger as a person.

I'd appreciate advice, feedback, etc. Thanks in advance ?

Hey Liza!! Yes I currently have my advisor and an SLP professor writing me letters of rec. Crazy how things can change so quickly. I almost didn't ask my advisor but then I thought about it, and she is the closest acadmic relationship I have. My advisor has seen my successes and difficulties and is the one who can speak to my academic journey the most acurately. I'm glad to hear you were also able to to gain more letters of rec it sounds like you are still short one though. You could always ask your academic advisor. Honestly they know us better than most of our professors and they see our grades every semester not just for one class. I hope it works out, I know this is a super stressful time.

Hi! I was able to get a third recommender, my current supervisor who I have a good relationship with. I work at a school as a paraprofessional :)

Hi! So I applied last fall and none of my letter writers were CSD professors. I felt insecure about it at first, but I was told by a professor along the way that quality really matters. If you're sure the people writing you letters will write you great ones, that may be more important. It is up to you what you choose to do, but I got in! Hope that helps.

Hi! It looks like I won't have letters from CSD professors. I was starting to feel insecure too, but I'm doing better. Of course I'm disappointed, but I'm satisfied with my recommenders. I have letters from my supervisor, SPED teacher, and SPED professor all whom I have solid relationships with. I do agree, quality is very important! They will help make or break your application.

Hey Liza I'm currently having a very similar problem. I asked one of my supervisors at my job (working in an elementary school, for a tutoring program). However that is my only LOR at this moment. Last semester one of the professors I was planning on asking prior to COVID, turned out to be awful and dealt with the online switch/students very poorly. Long story short that professor was going to be my 2nd LOR and after everything that happened during COVID I could no longer ask. I am sort of freaking out as well, because all the programs I plan to apply to ask for 3 LOR. I was thinking of asking my program advisor, and two of my current professors. However, I don't know the proper etiquette to asking a professor especially while you are still taking their class. If I don't ask my current professors I don't know what I will do.

Hey! I hope you gained more recommenders. I asked a special ed teacher I worked with and one of my sped professors. I wasn't able to get in touch with one SLP professor and I'm going to get in touch with another professor this weekend. Long story short I'm 10 on the waitlist and I told her I wanted to stay on the list and ask her again at the end of the month..

Anyone applying to Speech@Emerson for the January 2021 cohort? The GRE scores for this term have been waived, but should I still provide mine if I took them in summer of 2018? I got 4.5 writing, 148 Quant and 158 Verbal. My cum GPA was 3.5, but I majored in literature for my undergrad so I have none of the prereqs done. The admissions counselor told me this wouldn't be a problem, but I'm still a little uncertain.

I'll be applying for Jan 2021! That's the plan lol.. It's up to you if you want to send your scores.
