  1. Yes, I have received deadline extensions without a problem. I was upfront with the school about my having not heard back from a program and wanting to make an informed decision. And I know many others who have done the same. With regards to the idea of accepting and then turning down later: It is much more professional and respectful for you to ask for a deadline extension than to "accept" and take a spot with the intention of maybe dropping that spot later, and potentially having someone on the waitlist turned down because you firmed that spot.
  2. Congrats! I lived in Seattle for quite a long time, and I miss it constantly. I also have a close family member who works at UW (though not as a prof), and they adore it! Portland, OR and, as WT said, Vancouver, BC are only a few hours away by car or train as well - two awesome potential road trips right there! P.S. If you have any questions about the city, don't hesitate to send me a message.
  3. Hi everyone and congratulations on UofT! Yesterday I officially accepted my offer to the English PhD program at Toronto. Like lore, I am also coming from the West Coast, though the majority of my family lives in Southern Ontario. Really excited to begin, but also nervous beyond belief!
  4. There have been so many conversations on GC so of course it can be hard to remember, but I think we did briefly talk about our BC background and also had a brief hockey talk as well. Speaking of which, I will definitely be taking my Canucks jersey with me when I go.
  5. Oh, this is such wonderful news! I am beaming from ear to ear! Congrats, congrats, congrats!
  6. Thanks so much, 1Q84. I, again, am out of upvotes or else I would upvote your post. Though I am from British Columbia myself, most of my Canadian family is from and currently lives in Ontario - Richmond Hill, London, Sarnia, and Windsor primarily - so I am quite familiar with Toronto and Ontario in general. One of the reasons I applied to Toronto is because (despite the cold weathers and humid summers) I really adore Toronto as a city, and would really like to live there. I lived there very briefly a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much. Nervous, slightly overwhelmed, and happy all at once! Congrats again on USC! Great school, and I will be very jealous of you during Toronto's cold winters.
  7. Unfortunately I am out of upvotes (or I would upvote your congratulations), but thank you so much!
  8. I will be attending Toronto's English program this fall. Time to get some serious winter wear!
  9. The past few months, weeks, and days have been a roller coaster ride but...dare I say it?...I will be attending Toronto this fall! And, though I won't be moving to the UK for my PhD studies, yesterday I learned that my summer is going to be spent doing some pretty awesome academic work in England! I am ecstatic! It will be a wonderful way to relax, grow, and prep for PhD life. Phew! Thank you so much to everyone who has been on this roller coaster ride with me. Couldn't have come through it all in one piece without your insight and support. And so many congrats! Cannot wait to see all the awesome things we do in this next chapter of our academic lives!
  10. More scholarships coming in. Feeling lucky. And so the decision-making process intensifies.

  11. I am out of upvotes, but I am upvoting the crap out of this spiritually. So many congrats! Now you have some tough decisions and some great choices.
  12. And success! I got another extension! So thankful right now.
  13. Thanks! I actually sent the request about 10 minutes ago. And many congratulations again!
  14. Congrats! Perhaps we will see each other this fall.
  15. Hi everyone! I am in a bit of a pickle and would appreciate some insight. The deadline to respond to School A was April 1st but I asked for an extension. They extended my deadline until April 6th, but told me to let them know if that wasn't enough time. Since it is Easter weekend, the two remaining places I am waiting to hear from have just informed me that they will release their results after Easter and no later than the morning of April 8th. These two places are my first choices but School A is definitely a strong second choice. I really want to hear back from the other two places before making my final decision, but am ever aware that there are people on School A's wait list who are anxious for a decision and who have been promised one on April 6th. Would it be unacceptable to tell School A about my situation and ask if I can have an extension to respond to their offer by no later than the afternoon of April 8th? Thanks! Happy long weekend!
  16. Congrats on the job offer jhefflol! That is wonderful news!
  17. Thank you so much for your suggestion. I am going to do that.
  18. When I asked one of my potential schools in the UK about placement records, they told me they don't have access to that information. Should I be worried about that response?

Yes that's what I am hearing so that is a relief. I have been accepted to KCL and Kent. :)

  20. The visit was great in many ways - the staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly, everything was well-organized, and overall I had a lot of fun and met some great people. However, despite all of that, I also feel that the program is not the best fit for me. That being said, it sounds like an absolutely stimulating, fantastic program and place to study. It is all still too fresh for me to fully articulate and, as I said, I need some time and distance before I can really say how I feel - but, without being able to fully articulate at this point, I couldn't help but feel by the end of the day that, despite how impressive the program is, it is not the best one for me. Sorry, I realize I am rambling - my head is kind of full now. Hopefully what I typed sort of makes sense.
  21. Had my campus visit today and I am feeling a little bit heartbroken. The program is fantastic, with reputable scholars and hard-working, driven, accomplished students. I really was ready to embrace it, and on paper it seems such a good fit - but (keeping in mind, of course, that it is hard to get the feel of a school in just one day), after my visit, I am not sure it is really that good of a fit anymore. Need some time away from thinking about it though - will give myself some distance, then come back and see how I feel in a few days.
  22. Off to my campus visit!

  23. Off to my campus visit! Nervous, anxious, excited, looking forward to a few days out of town, and hoping that this helps answer some questions for me in my decision-making process.
