  1. Received another scholarship on top of my already generous funding offer from Toronto. The pressure of decision-making increases.

      what a compliment :)

  2. This post honestly just made my day! Thank you!
  3. I am currently starting season 6 of X-files. It is actually my first time watching the series. I am kind of embarrassed to admit that since it's been out for quite awhile and now I am constantly trying to avoid hearing anything about it for fear of spoilers...but better late than never!
  4. Yes, the decision-making process is proving to be very frustrating for me, as well - the deadline for my fully-funded offer is quickly approaching while my scholarship nomination outcomes for my other schools won't be finalized until well after that deadline has passed. I wish I could make a decision with full understanding of everything I've been offered, but looks like such will not be the case. Alas, the problems with applying to schools in multiple countries on very different systems! Ah well, I too have a campus visit coming up and I am hoping that it helps to make my decision easier. Many congrats to all of you who have made the big decision! And best of luck to those of you who are still figuring things out. You are not alone!
  5. My 2nd choice needs me to accept or decline very soon, but I won't hear about funding from my 1st choice for many weeks. Even if I can get an extension from my 2nd choice, it likely won't be long enough for me to hear back from my 1st choice. The woes of applying to schools in different countries.

Definitely hard. Have you mentioned this to your 1st choice program? They might be able to speed things up, or at least give you a vague idea of what you might be offered.

Thanks. Yes, and there is a chance I might hear about funding from them prior to my 2nd choice's deadline - but only a small chance.

  6. I can definitely send you a PM after my visit (which will be next week).
  7. Congrats! UW is a fantastic school, and Seattle is an absolutely wonderful city! I have a close family member who actually works at UW (not in an academic position), and she has loved her time working there and has very positive things to say. Very strongly considering it, but I am holding off on my final decision for a little while longer, until after visiting the campus and the department. Congrats on your decision!
  8. Congrats to all new admits and waitlists! Was about to go to work and checked my email quickly on the way out to find that I got into U of Toronto's PhD English program with a huge scholarship!
  9. This is fantastic news! Congrats!
  10. Had thought I had finalized my first choice out of my offers, but then my prospective supervisor from my other school sent me an excellent email this morning and now I am torn again. Thankfully, the decision is sort of out of my hands now because it is down to where I get more funding.

Thank you. I know - I am beyond lucky and I feel very selfish for being so upset about the decision I have to make.

It's not selfish - it's difficult and dictates the course of your life over the next several years! Make a pros/cons list, decide which factors are most important and which ones you can deal with. Good luck!

Thanks Midwestern! I am definitely going to make a pros and cons list...just so difficult as I am drawn to the programs for vastly different reasons and both would provide absolutely different experiences. It is exciting but terrifying all at once!

  11. Had one of those bad teaching days today where you just want to take each of your students and apologize profusely to them for how badly it went. Yeah, one of those days...sigh.

Take a nice hot bath, make some tea, and just watch something to make you smile. :)

Sure have. Chances are that they did not notice your perceived inadequacies as much as you did. Try not to worry about it and make the next class better!

Thank you. :) I teach the same class again tomorrow and am hoping that it goes better this time around.

  12. Oh dear, I had a horrible time at work today so I have to say it really is uplifting to see all of the wonderful news on this board - definitely has brightened what had been an abysmal day! Congrats everyone! So very, very happy for you and could not think of a more deserving, generous group of people!
  13. Oh gosh, I've been at work all day and just came home to all of the wonderful news! Congrats, congrats, congrats! I am bursting with happiness for all the new admits!
  14. Thrilled to bits to see all of the wonderful news that is coming in this morning. Many congrats to all new admits!
  15. I am currently doing research assistant work in DH in Canada. To voice others here, Canada has many strong DH departments, including but certainly not limited to: UVic, SFU (including its Print Culture program within the English graduate program), U of T (including its Book History & Print Culture program), Ottawa Alan Liu at UCSB is amazing as well! He was a guest speaker at our school, and he really inspired a lot of our cohort to learn more about DH.
  16. Oh goodness, yay! Congrats Hannalore and allplaideverything!
  17. I am ecstatic to hear all of the good news! Congrats Cornell admits!
  18. OOOOH GOODNESS, I KNOW!!! I teach in the evenings so I won't be able to watch it live, but I have it set to record. Should be exciting!
  19. Congrats WT! This is definitely good and celebration-worthy news, especially if some funding comes with it! But, of course, you have MANY schools to hear from so there is still lots of hope for that PhD acceptance too. We have likely never met in person (though we are both from BC and I am also a Canucks fan), but I feel confident in saying you are awesome in so many ways - an awesome friend, an awesome scholar, and an awesome person! It's been great going through this journey with you on GradCafe.
  20. I have a couple of offers, so I know that it is unfair and selfish for me to be unhappy - but I am so stressed out over decision-making and funding that I want to just lay down and cry.

It's neither unfair nor selfish! It's perfectly valid. Good luck with it, and I'm sure that whatever way you decide will be the RIGHT decision. :)

  21. Congrats to all of the Brown admit! And congrats to the CUNY waitlists! Such exciting news!
  22. Thanks for the well-wishes and so many congrats to the UCR acceptances! Can't wait to see what other wonderful news rolls in for everyone throughout the week!
  23. I woke up to the news that I've been accepted to King's College London! I am in complete shock! I never ever thought I would receive this offer! I am literally in tears, I am so surprised.
