Ugh, I know what you mean. Especially with Michigan's app which was due December 5th (why?!). My writing sample was not completely finished so I turned it in as it was, and plus the statement of purpose...I cringe at the thought of it. The first four I put in I had next to no confidence in despite working on the materials for months. It just feels too final once you hit that submit button. The clarity of hindsight is HD.
I started feeling better about my applications after the 5th one. It's really a learning process in itself, and probably why second-year applicants fare better than they did their first time through. I'm comforted by the thought that if I happen to get shut out this year, at least next year I will have a much better grasp of what I'm doing.
