  1. Great topic, littlenova. I have friends who graduated Yale Sculpture a few years ago who said that Jessica Stockholder would frequently discard applications that seemed like the person just wanted a pedigree. They want people who need grad-school. They said one person applied who had already shown at the Whitney; they rejected that person. They also told me about a guy who applied to Yale 4 years in a row before he got accepted. Yes 4 years. He is now the most successful out of their classmates - sold out shows in NY. I'm approaching 29 - and may be (re)applying to grad school next year, unless I decide to have another child instead. So here is another spin on the age topic: children. Are there any other parents out there? If I were to have gotten in to school this year, my husband would have left his job to take care of our son while I was in class and work nights somewhere. (We have an alternate schedule - meaning our son is always with one of us while the other is at work - and it works for us really well for us.) Same friends who went to Yale said there were several people with kids in school there and mentioned how great it was to have little kids running around during crits. Sounds dreamy to me. Back to age, I really want another child and I just don't know which way is best to work it. Have another baby and go to school in a few years, or go to school and have another baby in a few years. ??? I know I'm the only one who can answer this question....and I honestly think my answer is to live life and let things unfold how they will. I'm wondering what others have done/ are planning to do.
  2. I got the rejection/ summer invite too....I'm not going to do it. Besides the cost factor, I have a small child and I just can't swing it.
  3. Got two rejection letters yesterday: VCU Sculpture and Ox-Bow residency. I had already decided that next year is better for school and have been gearing up to re-apply, but the rejections still sting. So.... Rejected Bard VCU Yale Haven't heard anything from Columbia U, but am thinking it's a rejection too. Looking ahead to 2011.

That's huge! Congrats! I'm still waiting for VCU too.
  5. We both had our email/pm disabled, but I just enabled mine, so send me your statement if you like.

Writing is a constant battle for me...I hate it and love it at the same time.

  6. Beautiful work! I'd love to read your statement.
  7. I grew up in the area too! (well about half an hour from Cranbrook, but... ) It is a beautiful place. Congrats on all of the acceptances!
  8. @grad_wannabe - Congrats on the MIT acceptance, that's huge!
  9. Same fate for me, I think. I am still waiting on one more school (VCU) but am just planning to reapply next year regardless of what their answer is.
  10. I'm sculpture.....but just wanted to say hello. I live in the Detroit area and have a friend currently in print media at Cranbrook. Also meet with a local crit-group with a cranbrook fiber alum. Seems like such a magical place. I didn't apply b/c (as much as I love it) I'd like to get out of Detroit for a few years.
  11. yes. I would want to know. GL!
  12. add me to that list too. My mind is pretty set on next year already and I'm still waiting to hear from 2 schools. If I do get an acceptance, I very well may defer for a year. Is that weird? ETA not sure how I posted that twice.

  14. Wow! Congrats to all those who are getting acceptances!
  15. Thanks! I looked at your flickr page and enjoyed your work as well. I'd love to see your videos, perhaps when you're not incognito any more. I haven't heard from VCU, but I have heard from friends who've applied (and were accepted) in the past that they take a while. So, I don't expect to hear anything until mid to late March. I certainly hope I hear sooner though. I did not apply to MICA...mostly because I am more interested in a University setting than a private art school (hence not applying to RISD either). My undergrad was at a private art school and I'd like to broaden my horizons. BUT I really wish I would have picked more than 4 schools b/c I am 2 rejections in already. If it comes down to it, I will just work hard this year, re-evaluate my goals and re-apply next. sigh.
  16. agreed, it's really nice to see everyone's work. http://jacklynbrickman.com
  17. Rejected: Yale Bard Still waiting on: VCU (sculpture) Columbia U I might apply to another or two (there are a few deadlines that haven't passed yet.) I'm wishing I applied to more than 4 earlier on.
  18. I am interested in the Transart Institute. Its a low residency mfa program. Has anyone ever heard of it? Good, bad? Know someone who's done it? The financial aid part sound confusing, but otherwise I'm really intrigued. Please share! Thanks.

    MFA Sculpture

Can't remember if I ever shared my list: Yale: Rejected Still waiting on: Bard VCU Columbia U I just noticed someone in a painting forum mentioned getting an interview at VCU....I've heard that they don't do interviews, just accept or reject. Does anyone know if that is specific to the painting department? Any sculpture applicants hear from anyone else lately? I'm getting increasingly nervous.

    interviews

Taking notes and hoping I get an interview to use them in.
  21. This prompted me to check mine and I was rejected as well. 3 more to go.

    painting or?

I'd agree that it depends on the types of programs you've applied to. I think that using materials other than paint is a good thing. I'd like to think that grad schools look at painters who think beyond paint as a material are just what they're looking for. I hope you get some good news soon!
  23. I would say at this early point, no news is good news. I *think* each individual department has their own way of reviewing portfolios, so the timing of the letters may just happen to correspond more with that than a school wide deadline. Keeping fingers crossed for you!

    MFA Sculpture

Thanks! I only applied to 4 schools, any of which I would be honored to attend. In hindsight 4 seems so few so I am just trying to think positive thoughts. eeeek!
