  2. Rejection e-mail from McGill.
  3. Has anyone heard from Brown/Johns Hopkins?
  4. Just got official e-mail from Irvine from Grad Director, had a call last week. Funding package to come in next few days, same with info on visiting day.
  5. Received a UBC rejection for PhD, York's offers will roll out end of Feb to mid March.
  6. I have the same question!
  7. UBC Rejection received in e-mail. That makes 1 for 1!
  8. Received an interview from UC Irvine after initial e-mail correspondence today. File recommended for admission, should receive official confirmation in a week or so. Elated!
  9. Finished up McGill, Toronto, Johns Hopkins and the New School for PhD programs in Political Science. Now the waiting game begins...
  10. I would toss an application to York University. I'm currently a student there, and they have a "decent" Canadian placement record for their PhDs. Problem would be the fit in terms of research interests. York has strong faculty members across all subfields, but in terms of your particular interests, I think that you might want to consider checking out Gregory Chin and Laam Hae.
  11. Completed most of my applications. Just waiting first semester MA grades to come in to send off to my schools. All the best to everyone.
  12. Received my GRE Scores today, 148V/150Q/6.0 AWA. Will likely still apply to Johns Hopkins, UC Irvine, Brown and possibly UC Santa Cruz. Thoughts on rewriting or keeping? I'm currently a masters student, so I didn't have too much time to prep for the GRE.
  13. I just got my GRE scores in and scored a 148 on verbal, 150 on quant and a 6.0 on AWA. I'm planning to apply to a mix of schools in the states in the Top 50 for PhD programs in Political Science (Brown, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, Johns Hopkins, and the New School which doesn't require the GRE as I'm an international applicant) Was wondering if it is worth rewriting, and how much value departments place on the AWA score.
  14. Hello Belles! I'm currently an MA student at York's Political Science program. In regards to the schools that you're planning to apply to, I got into both McMaster and Waterloo for their MA programs. Your stats are fine, infact they're a hair higher than mine for when I applied, as I applied while still in undergrad, I had about a 3.5-3.6 while applying and had strong reference letters from Political Science professors at McMaster (Where I did my undergrad). The only thing I would emphasize is to write a strong statement of intent, as its the only part of the application process that you have direct control over. (You can't control your grades, as they're pretty much set in stone, and you can't control what your letter writers will write about you). As for myself, I'll be applying to PhD Programs in Canada in Political Theory and International Relations. Looking at UBC, UofT, York and possibly McGill, barring GRE scores.
  15. Hello all! I'm currently attending a Canadian University for an MA in Political Science. Plan to apply to Political Science programs in Canada, US and UK. Tentative list so far includes: Canada - University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, McGill University and York University US - UC Irvine, Johns Hopkins, Brown, Columbia and possibly the New School. UK - Oxford, Cambridge and London School of Economics. Graduated with an undergrad gpa of 3.2 - senior years (Last 2 years GPA) at about a 3.5. Estimated grad gpa based on first term marks (hopefully) 3.8. Have yet to write the GRE, will likely do so in the coming weeks. Will be pursuing Theory as a major field, IR as a minor field.
  16. Hello, should have been a bit more explicit about my interests - currently at work so I did the short and quick. My interests are at the intersection of IR and Theory. Specifically, I am interested in studying the debate of global justice from both a quantitative political economy perspective, as well as a qualitative political theory perspective. I am also interested in studying cosmopolitanism and critical theory. In cosmopolitanism, I'm interested in the problems of territory, citizenship and security studies as well as the theoretical nuances of cosmopolitanism - Thinking David Held, Archibugi, Appiah. For critical theory, I'm largely interested in Marx and pretty much anything post-Marx - thinking along the lines of Fraser, Habermas, Foucault, etc. I have a good grasp of what institutions are ideal for studying this kind of work in Canada, but less so in the States. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate them!
  17. I feel like the question I am about to ask is one that varies between departments - How likely is it that universities will be able to "hold off" on assessing your file until your first batch of MA grades comes in? I know that from a Canadian context, it is fairly common, but I am unsure how it is on the other side of the border!
  18. Hello all, I will be applying this fall to PhD Programs in Canada as well as in the United States. My subfields are in Political Theory and International Relations. To give a preamble, I am a Canadian Citizen, obtained my Bachelor's at a Canadian Institution (McMaster University), and will be attending a Canadian institution for my Masters this fall at either York University or Carleton University. Given that applications for PhD admissions will be due prior to completing my first semester of my Masters program, is there any way around this, as I hope to compensate a low undergrad GPA with a high Masters GPA. My stats so far include: a 9.6/12 GPA over last 2 years, Overall GPA from undergrad is a 8.9/12. If I calculate my Political Science GPA alone, I will have a 10/12 GPA. Edit: After converting my letter grades to the 4.0 scale this is what I have: Last 2 years = 3.53/4, Overall GPA = 3.36, Political Science GPA Only: 3.66 I have yet to write the GRE, and will be this fall. The schools I am aiming to apply to in Canada would be: McGill, York, UBC, and perhaps UofT. In America, the schools I will be applying to include: Johns Hopkins University, New School for Social Research, Columbia, Stanford, Brown, University of Rochester, Cornell, and UCLA/UCB. In terms of admissions criteria for American universities, as I am not an American citizen, will it be difficult to gain admission into an American university? Given that my undergraduate GPA is not stellar, I would be open to any suggestions for institutions in the United States that specialize in Political Theory or International Relations that are within my reach.
  19. For those that are applying to UVic's Masters program, based on e-mail correspondence, applicants will be notified this wednesday
  20. Same here! Funding offer to come in the mail.
  21. Update on York! Admission offers will be made on Myfile on Monday 16th. Best of luck to all!!
  22. Anyone here back from UVic, UBC, York? Sorta getting antsy, as I have 3 business days remaining to accept/reject Carleton's MA offer.
  23. I've applied to the MPS program at Waterloo, haven't heard anything yet.
