  1. I also went to UT Austin for undergrad! The staff is wonderful! They're all extremely kind and supportive. UT Austin is overall a very heavily research oriented school. Essentially all of the professors have ongoing research projects. SLP is no different. So yes, the program at UT Austin is pretty research oriented. But there is also a pretty large clinical focus to the program. I worked in the clinic for a year and I loved it, the clinical supervisor is wonderful and there is a huge variety of clients that come into the clinic! In addition, as everyone else has said, UT Austin is an EXTREMELY competitive school. They get a lot of applicants, and their accepted students generally have very high GREs and GPAs, along with varied experiences in their backgrounds. However, that being said, they do take a very holistic look at their applicants and take a lot of things into account. A lot of students get into UT Austin without amazing GPAs if they have awesome resumes to make up for it. In regards to the other schools you mentioned. I applied to all of those schools for this upcoming Fall 2015 term, with the exception of Our Lady of the Lake. So I'll just go ahead and list them with my opinions of them! -UT Dallas: Competitive, but also looks very holistically at their applicants. However, they do rolling admissions. So basically, you can have an incredible profile for them, but if you apply too late in the process then you might not even really get looked at because they have already chosen their class. So essentially, if you're serious about them, apply VERY early. On the negative side, I found them to be very disorganized throughout the admissions process which was extremely frustrating. But I never visited, so I can't speak to their staff. -U North Texas: Again, competitive and quite honestly not very helpful throughout the admissions process which I found irritating. However, I have always heard wonderful things about going there from everyone I know who did their Masters there. -Baylor: I found their staff to be wonderful throughout the admissions process. While I didn't get in, they were still so kind throughout. They get a lot of applications and are generally pretty competitive. However, I've kind of found that it depends on the year/semester of application with them. They just happened to have a huge applicant pool with great applicants this fall. However, in previous years they didn't. So if you're serious about them perhaps consider spring admission. If you are really interested in going to school in Texas, I really recommend trying for Texas Tech University. That is where I will be attending this coming fall and they were awesome throughout the application process! They offer interviews to qualified applicants which I really find to be a bonus. It's also a highly ranked and respected program! The staff also all seem to be very, very kind and supportive so far!
  2. Hi! I was just posting to see if I could find any other Tech class of 2017 students on here! Reply if you're attending in the fall!
  3. Hi! I got into University of Washington for their MedSLP program! Honestly, I was pretty shocked when I found out I got in, but I think I have a general idea of why it is that I got in. My general idea is that my application profile is pretty diverse. I got my undergrad in Psychology from UT Austin, then followed that up with leveling done at UT Austin the year after I graduated. Overall, my GPA isn't stellar (3.48), but it isn't awful. However, I started my freshman year with a 2.8 (too much partying, oops lol), and was able to pull my GPA up from that to a 3.48. So I think that actually looked pretty good for me. My last few semesters I averaged a 3.75 GPA. My SLP GPA also stood around a 3.75 when I did my applications. I got a 159 Verbal, 154 Quantitative, 4.5 Writing on my GRE. My greatest application strength (in my own opinion), is the fact that I made sure I had a variety of different experiences to put on my Resume/application. I worked at a camp for kids with Autism, volunteered in a stroke rehabilitation clinic, worked in 3 different SLP and psych based labs, had an internship at a counseling center, and volunteered in a hospital. I obviously did not do all of these things at the same time lol, but I made sure that over time I accumulated as many different experiences as possible to put on my application! Hope this helped a bit, good luck in your applications!!
  4. Just checked my status on the portal today and saw I was denied :/
  5. I got into three schools (including my top choice) with a 3.48 overall GPA, 3.7ish in SLP. I think the fact that I had started my freshman year of college with a 2.8 and improved it to a 3.48 might have worked to my benefit though.
  6. Just a random question! For those of you in grad school, what apps and materials do you recommend a soon-to-be grad student obtain?
  7. I'm just wondering if anyone really knew an answer to this question. I've heard from multiple people that the grad school you go to doesn't really make a difference in your job search as an SLP, since it is such an in demand job. However, I was still curious if anyone had any first hand insights into this and whether or not its true!
  8. So I recently found out I was so blessed as to be accepted into both University of Washington - Seattle and Texas Tech University. However, I really don't know what to decide at this point. I would really appreciate any first hand reviews/opinions of either program, the city the school is in, overall experience, etc. Anything to help me decide!! Thanks so much in advance!
  9. Just found out this afternoon that I got into the medSLP program at University of Washington - Seattle off the wait list!! I am absolutely shocked! Was 100% expecting not to get in
  10. So they responded! Unfortunately, not with very helpful information. Here is what they said: "Thank you for your interest in the Master’s Program in Speech-Language Pathology. In response to your query, we are unable to specify a date as to when you will hear back regarding your waitlist status. You will be notified via email and final decisions should be made in the next few weeks. Please let me know if you have any further questions!" Honestly, I decided to accept my offer at another school. So I'm less concerned now, but I still find it frustrating that schools think its ok to just keep students hanging in the balance like this just a few months before they're supposed to start school if accepted!
  11. Still haven't heard anything back from them yet. :/ Granted, they haven't exactly been the fastest email responders in the past either.
  12. Well I just emailed them today asking if they could give me an idea of when they would be accepting students from the wait list. So I suppose we shall see what they say...
  13. I haven't. I figured there's not really much of a point. I figured if any information regarding my application was available then it would be on my portal or emailed to me :/
  14. Don't freak out! My overall GPA is slightly lower than yours, and I've been accepted by two schools so far. Getting into grad school is a lot more than your grades and GRE scores (though those are important). -Make sure you bulk up your Resume as much as you can with Lab experience, varied volunteer experiences, related jobs, etc. ANYTHING that you can put on your resume to demonstrate your passion for and experience in the field. -Make sure you study hard for your GRE and leave yourself plenty of time to retake it if you feel the need to, prior to applying (I took mine twice before applying). -Research prospective schools THOROUGHLY. Make sure the schools you are applying to are REALISTIC prospective schools. You can even email schools beforehand and politely give them a run down of your profile (GRE Scores, GPA, experiences, etc.) and ask them what your chances are of getting in are. (I did this at all he schools I was thinking about applying to and it was extremely helpful) -Develop relationships with your professors so that they know you well enough to write you strong, personal letters of recommendation -DON'T WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE. Always make sure you start everything early - asking for rec letters, starting applications, taking your GRE, etc. Do everything early on! There's nothing more stressful than trying to get everything done last minute. -Don't freak out about getting into "Top" schools. The fact is, SLPs are extremely in demand these days. So the place where you get your Master's degree isn't all that important in regards to your chances of getting a job. Most everyone from any school has a job before graduation in our field. -Apply to as many schools as you can manage/afford in order to maximize your chances of getting in somewhere! -Lastly, don't freak out! You will get in somewhere!
  15. I'm starting to wonder if I am ever going to hear back from the two schools I'm waitlisted at...
  16. Anyone else waitlisted at University of North Texas? I got waitlisted awhile back and I haven't heard anything yet. Anyone have any information on when we will hear back?
  17. Yeah I haven't heard anything yet either, really hoping for this one!
  18. My advice is to definitely to get things done as early as possible - ask professors for recommendations as early as possible so they can write you the best recommendation possible, prepare for your GRE well in advance, TAKE your GRE well in advance (so you can have time to retake it if you feel the need to do so), get your personal statement written and edited by as many people as possible as early as possible (so you can make changes to it and perfect it) and start your applications as early as you possibly can. Don't put anything off. It all seems pretty doable until the deadlines start creeping up on you while you're busy with a full course load, etc.
  19. Yeah I'm trying not to freak out, but its just getting so late in the semester. Like I already accepted by admission to another school because I had to respond by a certain deadline. Buuuuut honestly, if I get into either of my waitlists, I'm probably going to withdraw my acceptance and go to one of those. The later it gets in the semester, the worse I'm gonna feel about doing that though lol
  20. Still waiting to hear from the two waitlists I have left.. Getting so anxious. I looked at the results search page at when people heard off the waitlists from my schools last year, and it seems like if they're following past precedent, I should hear sometime this week. We shall see though.
  21. Is anyone else on the waitlist for UNT? Anyone heard anything from them yet/know when they'll start accepting off the waitlist? Really hoping to find out soon!
