  1. They need a deposit by April 5th. I'm only waiting on RISD who should have their decisions hopefully sent at least by next week. Someone else in another department said they had recieved an acceptance so it should be soon.. I have a feeling it will be Boston.
  2. I sent you a message but I sent it before I had read this. I also hadn't read about the details in your work. I wasn't sure how far you were into it or if it was just a 'new idea' that had only just occured to you. If you are 7 pieces in then that's pretty far into it I would say. I think you're going to at least need 13 more . Most programs I applied to required 12-20 pieces. I think also by your 20th one you'd find yourself in a more firm place with them (trust me the further you are into it the better it will be).
  3. Yeah...it was really hard for me to find a program that felt like it really had a good mix of figurative art and then more pattern based/ abstract art. I specifically tried to look for this....Blehg. I had a hell of a time trying to find places I liked..Maybe I'm picky?
  4. OH duhhh ! Look at me, thinking everything revolves around painting. I am looking to get into the Painting program
  5. Yeah the other programs don't seem to mind undergraduate students as much. RISD even mentioned that new BFAs aren't the norm, but they have them and they usually do fine. Well,, when I applied I did my best at being honest when I filled out the application. I told every school that I needed more exposure and had a lot to learn - that I needed to really work on my professional skills. My honesty may have hurt me somewhat, but I still got an interview with RISD and MICA despite it. I see that as a plus. I know I am weak in the professional- presenting aspect of making art work. In the end I want to be in the program that is best for me and that I would be a good fit for. MICA obviously wasn't that program at the present time..
  6. Also to be fair to her, I was really bad during the interview too. I felt like I bombed it.. I don't even think I did so well in the RISD interview either. Lol the places I got decent financial awards for are places I didn't even have an interview for. PNCA (which did have a phone interview) gave me a small scholarship. Syracuse, Boston, PAFA- no interview. Hahah I may just REALLY suck at interviews.
  7. Joan Waltermath, the head of the painting department - the one who interviews everyone, basically told me I would not be getting in. That I wasn't experienced enough- I need to be a year out of school ...and have more life experience, etc. She told me that she usually does not accept fresh undergraduate students. It was obvious to me that she didn't really think I would be able to do well in her program where I am at now. It was also obvious to me that the odds are stacked against undergraduates, but a highly qualified active one can still get in. She did tell me to try again next year . But I am not waiting around for next year lol. Again though, i keep trying to make sure that people dont' think I am badmouthing her or MICA; it's just probably going to be harder to get into that school as a new BFA than if you had more time under your belt.
  8. Ehg to be honest at two other schools though I've been offered 50 % and 60% respectively even if they say I am 'one of their top candidates' <<I sometimes don't know if they are being honest , or they say that to everyone. I kind of trust them though. I think maybe there is another student who could have gotten lucky over me? but it sounds like this offer is pretty much the best you are going to get at most schools unless you're very very lucky (well schools that aren't more local, lesser known schools I guess ).
  9. OH i didn't realize you hadn't been interviewed. That Joan Waltermath is kind of tough. She'd be great to learn from though. She pretty much decides everything there in the painting program...But yeah I hope things are good. if not, at least your portfolio got stronger right?
  10. really? Crap I haven't heard anything bout if I've been accepted or not and I just emailed Dennis Congdon about a day or so ago. Said they were still deciding. Maybe you were an easy pick haha! congrats!
  11. Kelly I wouldn't be surprised if you got in . Your work sort of fits with what I saw in the student work at MICA but I could be wrong. I don't want to gve you false hope but I could see you at MICA and I think your work is strong enough for you to have a fighting chance.
  12. Pacific Northwest offered me 13,000 dollars. I rejected their offer outright pretty much though. It's just a drop in the bucket honestly.
  13. I went to high school in South Carolina...I lived there about mn....5 or 6 years? . Oh crap we're going to both be lost southerners. hahaha . I've gotten in contact with some other art students interested in Boston who kind of live up there just by going into the visual art forum...and I already started asking people in the apartment listing off the website about a room, so I may have some kind of people to help guide me. You should try and get in contact with people from your specific major/ school if you can. Oh I will most likely accept unless one of the other schools pulls something magical out of their hat or i get accepted with an awesome scholarship to this last university.
  14. I kind of had an interesting experience with MICA. I respect Joan Waltermath ,though , and she told me the truth about how I wouldn't really fit her program (not enough experience- try again next year). She also didn't like my large oil paintings very much and prefered my gouaches (which I didn't really understand, but I've been trying to look at it without a biased eye and now I sort of understand). It did seem like she was kind of set against fresh undergraduate students , and that only the rare exception would change her mind. Her interview was by far the most grilling (and it was my first ever interview I've ever had lol!). I would almost not recommend applying there as an undergraduate unless you are unusually active in the art world and more self established . I am kind of glad that I at least filled out the application and applied there, just because I think that interview really helped prepare me and I learned a lot from it. I also got a boost of confidence cuz she told me the amount of applicants interviewed is about 30 out of 250. :B so yeah it wasn't all bad.
  15. Some of them seem to have a different deadline. The only place I've been given a definite deadline for thus far is Syarcuse University and they told me March 22. I almost have a feeling that this is a deadline for the candidates they initially want- and then maybe when those say no or yes they inform the rest of the candidates on their acceptances/ declines based on which of the initial ones said no? I could be wrong but I haven't heard of anyone talking about a rejection from Syracuse, even though I've been told I was accepted. heck in my interview like at the end of February I was told I was accepted. I thought it was just an interview! LOL!
  16. Hello, Cecily brooke, I am drawn to your recent more watercolor looking pieces out of what I see from here. The compositions are more daring and interesting to me. There is a real depth and variation in the colors. It's impressive to me the progress that has been made when looking over your portfolio. There is a sophisticated handling of the medium that shows off how skilled you are with it. They are exciting and fresh, especially the first four. The other two feel like more of a beginning to me. I say good job and continue to explore those pieces, but don't be afraid to take elements from what you learned previously and tie those in if you feel like it will contribute to your idea.
  17. I am not good at critiquing sculpture or photography so I'll avoid commenting on those. But I think it's a good idea to have a forum to help and share ideas about art work . I want to help if I can. My work: http://kasuverkrubbe.com/home.html
  18. Madison, you have a very good handle on colors and have a good level of basic skill. Your drawing skills are good , and you obviously have a grasp on composition. My main constructive criticism from waht I see here is that you don't seem to have dedicated yourself to an idea. You are sort of dabbling in landscapes and portraits, but they all have distinct feels to them, instead of feeling cohesive. I am an undergraduate senior currently, and this is an issue I see with some of my fellow undergraduate students. They have trouble finding their 'concept' even though they have strong skills and a way that they handle their material. I suggest really searching for what you want to do and what you want to explore in your work. What is it about the art that draws you in? Is it the colors? The angles? Capturing an emotion? Once you discover what's really the most important thing for you to say you will learn ways to say that more in depth, and I think you will see an explosion in your work's development. Remember, focus isn't being narrow. If you really limit your focus you have a lot more to explore than you will ever realize! You can say one thing more deeply because you'll be dedicated to that idea. I hope you don't mind the criticism. Some people don't like constructive criticism at all (I have friends who want to knock my head off if I even mention something not positive). But since you asked, I wanted to be honest...and I think it's an important idea for any artist to learn.
  19. I've heard floating on the interwebs that large funding is rare for certain programs. I'm sure they give some money, but probably not a majority tuition offer. I am thinking that RISD is probably going to be like what I've been offered from 2 schools so far...about 30,000 dollar offer total for the 2 years , and that's a 'high level' scholarship (or so they tell me). There may be a full tuition scholarship for a VERY VERY lucky single student, but I am not sure.
  20. I can't really go visit so I hope I don't completely change my mind when I get there :CCC The only school that really invited for in person interviews that I applied to was one and i really felt like not going was going to hurt my chances, but I just can't do it....
  21. Oh dude that sucks!!! >_< I wonder what happened in the committee...or maybe they have a number of students they recommend and the final comittee decides? I don't know.
  22. I haven't fully decided if I'm going to Boston University, just because there is one school that hasn't notified me yet of their decision, but I think it's unlikely they will give me a better offer. Hello!!!!!! If I attend, I will be in the College of Fine Arts for painting . Wooh! I'm from Texas So I haven't ever been to Boston and will need lots of help getting around! haha!
  23. ^^^ This awesome awesome. I have had a few rejections that didnt feel very good, but I learned a lot from the process. The first interview I had I was basically told I didn't have enough experience/knowlege to be able to excell in the program and the whole thing about fresh undergraduate students usually not being admitted. She even said that 'most people get angry at her' and that my response was 'very mature'. Instead of throwing a fit for her telling the truth that I wouldn't fit her program, I thanked her very much for what I had learned. It was worth it to go through that first interview to learn what I needed to work on. I think it's important to be ready for the program you are going to be in, and that's really determined by what the staff (and they are knowlegeable) have experience in . There is an off chance they are wrong, but usually they know what they are talking about in regards to their own curriculum. We can do this guys! Warts and all.
  24. I guess I just didn't really think much of it since my sculpture professor (I am a painter, but he's married to my painting professor and I had to take some 3D classes) transferred his first year of his MFA . *shrugs* I figured it wouldn't be simple, but definitely not impossible.
  25. I think if there was a universal notification date it would be almost as notorious as valentines day . A lot of soaring dreams and crushed hopes. Maybe it is better to spread it out? ;p
