  1. you should call them. They interviewed me for the painting program and didn't even email me or anything on whether I was accepted or not . I only knew they had contacted people for the waitlist because of this forum. When I called they said they had mailed my rejection letter.(but didn't even bother emailing me!)
  2. I chose Boston!!! Syracuse is so nice though and even invited me to come visit whenever I want . It's hard turning down a program with such good people.
  3. I am having a lot of trouble deciding between Syracuse University and Boston University I caluclated it and Syracuse will only be 3000 dollars more for 3 year program versus Boston for 2 years. The total I will pay is only 3000 dollars more .... o_o Even if Boston gave me full tuition. I am torn up. I don't know which to do. They are kind of even in my mind.
  4. Okay people I finally called RISD for the painting MFA and I was not accepted. For some reason they thought it okay to just mail me a letter but not email me. lol.
  5. let me check. I think I know a girl who went to a college in north carolina but i don't know if that is it
  6. I think I may have gotten unlucky or I just didn't look throroughly enough for a stipend but I am wishing I had. lol.
  7. Okay so I went through all the the calculations and if I get the cheapest rent in Syracuse as I can, I calculated it all up, and I would pay only 3,078 dollars more for 3 years at Syracuse than I would for 2 years at Boston, purely due to Rent and the food plan cost differences. That means that either is a viable option for me.
  8. dang you did VERY well for yourself . Part of me screams for you to go to Yale but that just may be me being starstruck by the name and the money for going there. I feel like Yale graduates tend to do well though.... Maybe I don't know as much about graphic design though. I'm in for painting.
  9. Is there anything else you really like about Syracuse? I think it's the extra year and the semester spent elsewhere that is making it hard to say no- plus how awesome everyone is there just in personality. Actually Syracuse walked me around on Skype and showed me the place- they were really the most invested and personable of all the schools that interviewed me. It makes it harder to say no. They are also the ones I have been able to talk to the most...so it will suck saying no to them. It really will.
  10. 'the food plan and health insurance for boston university are more expensive than Syracuse as well, but if there isn't that big of a difference then I am trying to rule out money as a factor.
  11. Yes I am getting funding to where either would be suitable. Also, Boston I may have already found an apartment for a good price.. I am going to recalculate expenses before I totally decide but I sort of caught a listing early and may have an agreement. (I had already ruled out Syracuse ,but then they offered me more funding). I do know that if you want to roll with the school supported housing, both Syracuse and Boston are VERY expensive, and surprisingly- about even. You can find cheaper places in Syracuse if you are willing to live off further...Quite a cheaper. I've really gotten lucky with this apartment deal (if it goes well), though I'd be living with 2 other people. But hey would only be a 15 minutes walk !!!
  12. yes it has bene very confusing to me. Some places have faculty work i love but then kind of not so much with their students, and then some art the opposite of that. There was also a professor somewhere else at another school whose work is probably the closest to something I would love tolearn first hand from, but someone who knew that professor told me that they weren't a great teacher. (and that professor would be the main reason I would have gone there). Ah well.. I guess you're right that someone can be a good professor, but maybe not the best with their students. it's probably best to go to a school that has a mix of both faculty work you really like and then a variety of very different stuff.
  13. April 20th! holy crap i may have to call them LOL! I have another school waiting on me. Maybe the email for me just diidn't get to me or something..I emailed but haven't gotten a response since Monday.
  14. Well..I am not 100 percent drawn to all the faculty work at Boston- it is good but it's not all my sort of thing (which is okay). Same at Syracuse..But to me at Boston there is a higher amount of 'the best' (i know I shouldn't call the art work better and is probably my biased opinion) studentartwork- students that I am impressed by. Syracuse is much more mixed in that respect. They have some AWESOME as but my impressed feeling isn't as spread out as it is forI Boston. I am actually not sure which school is known as better. My teacher says that there are solid painters at both at schools, but I almost get the feeling that the painting department at Boston is more well known.......but.....that maybe the program at Syracuse has a lot more variety. It almost seems to me that every other program at Syracuse is considered better ,except for painting! It's really strange to me though...I know I shouldn't base things on those US news rankings but most of the other mediums like ceramics, sculpture, and printmasking Syracuse ranks in, but for Boston it is only the painting program.....and everyone only talks about the painting program there- so maybe Boston is just REALLY known for painting and that is really it? (Syracuse even 'ranks' above Boston as a fine art university, but probably because it has higher variety in mediums avaliable). I know the ratings are not 100 percent but can't you get a good very general idea from them? I mean I don't know- would it be more beneficial to go to a program that seems more spread out in other areas? I kind of thing Boston may be better. I haven't heard much from anyone about Syracuse here. It's all about programs like Hunter and Carnegie Mellon and MICA and RISD and places like that. Some PAFA and I have had quite a few people talk to me about Boston.. But, Syracuse only had like 35 painting applicants or something like that.
  15. Hello everyone! Okay this is the deal. I basically need to know if any of you know much about Syracuse University/ why I should go there over Boston or vice versa. Syracuse- just got a new offer of 80% off tuition I would pay 5,000 a year totalling 15,000 tuition over 3 years Boston- Full tuition In my mind they seem pretty equivalent. I love the student work at Boston a lot more...I find teacher work to be more suited to me at Boston, but Syracuse is okay. I think it would be better for me to live in Boston versus Syracuse....but Syracuse has that extra year (it is a 3 year program) and it has the opprotunity to spend a semester elsewhere (which could be invaluable)... I feel like Boston may be a better school education wise (and I could be dead wrong) but Syracuse my have more opprotunity........ I am just not sure ..... Any opinon on either of these schools? Ps, Syracuse gave me a deadline off the 22nd...I avoided telling them no until the 23rd,but before I did they sent me information saying that I had been offered an 80 percent off scholarship. I apparently have an extra day to decide. A friend of mine thinks this is a little suspicious but I don't know. Anyway, please help as soon as possible!
  16. Help Help Help Help Help! Okay so a school I had sort of tossed out for the running (and that told me their deadline was the 22nd) just counteroffered me 80% tuition<< this is Syracuse University. It is a 3 year program. I had decided to pick Boston University if Rhode Island School of Design hadn't offered me anything better (they still haven't contacted me - why?) ....which offered me full tuition... I can't decide if it is worth the extra year at Syracuse to pay an extra amount of 15,000 extra dollars. i mean if the program felt to me like it was leaps and bound over Boston then heck yes!!! But....it reallly is about evenish in my mind. I just feel like I don't even know...
  17. I still haven't figured out what is up with RISD. I feel you for real
  18. Really? Ahg that kinda sucks though :/ Is art school just a new way to establish a from of 'academy' like back in the day of the Salon? You have certain artists teaching the next line of 'acceptable ' artists who then feed into the system and it is a large cycle used to keep control of the flow of art.... Mn maybe I am just being pessimistic. perhaps the best do usually go to the prestigious schools?
  19. This this this! Why haven't they contacted me???!!!
  20. If this is for the painting program...I haven't heard anything from them....what could this mean?
  21. I did a skype interview with RISD which was before the in person interview (I was actually the first interview! believe it or not...lol and I think I did badly so I may have made everyone else look good! you're welcome! haha) I did send them images via email but I didn't get as many questions concerning the work itself. They didn't really discuss them with me. I did bad on a lot of the questions..but I did awesome on at least one ...lol..I mean I know I shouldn't have done this but when I sent a thank you email I told them that I 'wasn't completely satisifed with all my answers' . They did respond that 'i stood out in their field of candidates ' and that 'my responses supported my strong standing'....I don't know exactly what that means though! lol and hope it's not just a generic reassurance. :S My interview skills are pretty bad (in my opinion). They ask me a question about my influences and i gave very generic overarching vague mentioning of certain movemetns instead of tying them back to my work......they even commented on that vagueness...- and then I haven't been to a lot of museums and they voiced their concern over that as well...So i did get some feedback from them regarding my answers.
  22. I would speak with Yale and not rule it out. But if they do not provide any funding....you will have to weight out your options...I mean you have to think if that much debt is going to hinder your progress in the future. Or if you'll have to work harder to be able to afford a living if you go to Yale , andthat will cut into your art work time. I would be leaning towards taking the full tuition offer at Rutgers, but then again I really liked Rutgers and am jealous you got in with that much funding hahahah XD! Plus that stipend... if you are the type that can hustle for representation (and don't need something like Yale to put you in front of more eyes) then why go to Yale if you can get a great education at another school that will also benefit your work? I would ask Rutgers about their MFA thesis show? What kind of location is it in? Do students have the potential of getting gallery offers? I know at two of the schools that I applied for they told me there is an opprotunity to show in New York and that some of their students (still a select few, but hey it's possible) had been approached by galleries.
  23. I am going to be posting a 'RISD pleaseeee tell me ' post until they do lol. Also to everyone that is an alternate at MICA good luck and to all the others that are waitlisted elsewhere!!! EEEE This is soooo anxiety inducing haha.
  24. Yeah I am very thankful for the program I have been a part of...But truthfully, I think the BFA hardly matters becuse the quality of the work fluctuates so widely among students that it's almost rendered useless to a school looking at your art work. But maybe that could still hinder someone to just have a BA?
  25. Yeah she was very helpful in her advice that I wasn't ready and I really respected her honesty. I just think that with other people deciding it means there is more variety in opinion (which can both lessen and heighten your chances). I did say that she either doesn't like the people's work she doesn't accept or she just doesnt' believe they are quite ready for her program despite liking their work. Of course that's how anyone really decides which applicants get in or not. I just like the idea of having more opinions, because even based on my BFA program, those opinions amongst different people can vary widely..Of course a wider variety of deciders didn't really help me at Rutgers and VCU so maybe the difference isn't that big ! I think she would really be able to whip any artists into shape though! I have confidence in her abilities.
