I also sent official transcripts to Stanford, it says in the FAQ that you should do so (second question): https://gradadmissions.stanford.edu/about/frequently-asked-questions/transcripts-letters-recommendation-and-statement-purpose My other unis handle it the way you said, i.e. official transcripts are only needed upon admission.

  7. Oh, I just found this thread! I submitted 2/4 applications. One of those has its deadline for the LoRs today and I'm also still waiting for the third letter.. the prof has a few hours left, I'll remind her later. A few days ago, she said that she'd submit it soon.
  8. Don't be sad about something you can't change, try to forget it! I firmly believe that others don't see our mistakes in the way we do. I just submitted my second application (out of 4) and one of my professors still hasn't mailed her LoR.. She has a few hours left until the deadline, I'll email her again.
  9. I don't see where I can edit my post above, I feel a little but stupid, haha. Anyway, I just got my official scores and AWA is 5.0, meaning 93rd percentile. I did not practice much for this, I looked at Cracking the GRE for tipps, compared my essays with sample scored essays from ETS, and posted two essays here to get feedback. I feel that my talent for languages and writing shows well in my GRE results and although I'm comfortable with statistics due to my field and had very good grades in math at school, I don't seem to possess the same talent for numbers. Interesting to see.
  10. Finally I can post in this thread! I prepped for about 2 months primarily with Magoosh. I watched all the video lessons, did all practice questions and used their vocabulary app. For me, it was a good preparation especially for the quant section, although it remained my weak section. Here are the practice tests I did and my results from the real GRE: 12.10. (ETS I): V155 (67%), Q154 (56%) = 309 21.10. (Free Manhattan Test): V158 (78%), Q152 (48%) = 310 24.10. (Free Kaplan Test with 3Q): V149 (41%), Q158 (71%) = 307 27.10. (ETS II): V161 (87%), Q157 (68%) = 318 30.10. (GRE VQVQV): V163 (92%), Q155 (60%) = 318 I'm super happy with my verbal score, I just wished I had scored something like 2 points more in the quant section. I should say that I slept very bad the night before the GRE, so no optimal conditions, but I hope the results won't keep me out of a program. As others said, the ETS tests seem to be most predictive. I found the Kaplan verbal part really hard but not the quant section, which was really surprising to me as I had heard the opposite before. All in all, all the scores I got corresponded with my feeling of how well I did (except for the real GRE verbal part, I felt that I had to guess a lot during the last, hard verbal part).

I assume you're a native speaker? Have you already taken the GRE (some time ago)? I haven't and I also haven't done a lot of practicing regarding AWA, so I really don't feel comfortable giving you grades, but I'll comment on some points that stick out to me, hope that helps a little bit: 1) I think that your ideas are well-founded and that your philosophy background becomes evident when reading this, but to be honest, I had some difficulties understanding the content and structure. I'd say that you should use less jargon, but maybe this impresses GRE graders? I don't know what they value exactly. I also read that one should bring quite specific examples and state how they relate to the issue at hand, I missed that at some parts. (-): organization and writing style; (+): quality of ideas, grammar & usage 2) I like this one better, it's easier to understand and very well organized. Regarding the content, I tried to "attack" the argument in all ways possible, that's why I questioned the vitamin A deficiency itself. Don't know if that's the right to do, though. I don't really find any weak points here, so: (+): organization, writing style, quality of ideas, grammar & usage
  12. Hey guys, I couldn't find sample responses to the two essays I had to write for the free Manhattan GRE Test (it said v2) - are there some? If not, would you be so kind to give my essays a look and estimate what score I might get? That would be super helpful! - - - - - People who make decisions based on emotion and justify those decisions with logic afterwards are poor decision makers. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. "Whether you get married or not, your decision will be wrong". It is said that this quote stems from Sokrates. He already stated what many people would agree with nowadays: Decision making is a difficult process. What is good and what is bad decision making then? Are poor decision makers those who first decide based on their gut feeling and then try to justify this decision with rational arguments? This is the question at hand and my answer to it is definitely "yes". It is normal for human beings to try to justify their decisions. Cognitive psychology has tried to explain why and how people do this and found an effect called "cognitive dissonance": When people make decisions that would normally contradict their values and belief systems, they are looking for arguments to support their decision and in this way to resolve their cognitive dissonance, which is an unfavorable feeling. While this is normal behavior and some might argue that this does not qualify people as bad decision makers, I still would argue that one should find logical arguments for decisions before actually making them. Many examples for bad decision making can be found in politics. A classical example are the people supporting Hitler during his Nazi regime. It is hard to imagine how so many could support his horrible undertaking when searching for logical arguments. Instead, it is easier to understand that those supporting Hitzler were frenzied by his charisma, that they felt united with the other supporters, that many of their feelings and fears were adressed during his speeches and that they consequently bolstered his regime, which for many now seems impossible to believe. It seems clear that the decision to support Hitler was one based on emotion rather than logic and trying to explain it with the latter is a sign of poor decision making. Another political example relating to this issue is the scandal around Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. Men of power and status are likewise prone to decisions based on emotion, as his example shows. The former president lied not only to his wife but also to the whole nation by claiming that he did not have sexual intercourse with Lewinsky, who was an intern at his office. When asked, he would probably admit that - had he thought logically about the consequences - he would not have engaged in such behavior with her, but again, his decision did not have much to do with logic. Trying to explain his behavior and his statements, he argued that oral sex is no form of sexual intercourse. While this definition is debateable, it is an instance of desparately trying to explain a clearly irrational act and is thus another example supporting my view that this kind of decision making has deficits. When finally bringing together these political examples with findings from cognitive psychology, it is evident that although explaining emotinal decisions with logical arguments is a common behavior, it cannot be seen as good decision making. It is an attempt to resolve cognitive dissonance, but in my opinion, it would be better to admit that the decision made was suboptimal because it had been based on purely emotional arguments that now seem to have little meaning. Admitting a poor choice and learning from this instance for further decision making is, to me, a more convincing way of decision making than trying to justify bad decisions with all means. - - - - - An international development organization, in response to a vitamin A deficiency among people in the impoverished nation of Tagus, has engineered a new breed of millet high in vitamin A. While seeds for this new type of millet cost more, farmers will be paid subsidies for farming the new variety of millet. Since millet is already a staple food in Tagus, people will readily adopt the new variety. To combat vitamin A deficiency, the government of Tagus should do everything it can to promote this new type of millet. Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation. The claim made here is that the government of the poor nation of Tagus should largely promote a new type of millet to combat vitamin A deficiency, which is prevalent in this country. While this undertaking seems noble, several questions need to be answered first in order to ensure that this recommendation is truly a valuable one. First, it is not clear how important vitamin A is. For example, in well-developed Western Countries people also have vitamin deficencies: due to the lack of sunlight, many suffer from vitamin D deficencies. Still, this condition does not really affect their lives negatively. Similarly, it should have been stated how problematic a vitamin A deficiency really is. If the nation is impoverished, there are probably other nutritional deficencies as well which may be more severe and should thus be combatted first. Consequently, it should be stated how dangerous the vitamin A deficiency is to evaluate the recommendation given. Second, too much of a vitamin can also be dangerous. It is not mentioned what consequences an overdose of vitamin A would have. Even such fundamental nutrients such as protein can in higher doses cause, for example, kidney problems. In order to evaluate the recommendation, it should be clear what dose of vitamin A is needed, whether there is a risk of people eating too much millet and if so, how the government would ensure that this would not happen. Third, the high costs of this new type of millet are mentioned. Although it is also said that farmers will receive subsidies, it is both not clear whether these subsidies will outweigh the additional costs associated with the millet and how the government will make sure that every farmer receives this money. It is probable that a poor nation also suffers from a suboptimal infrastructure, which makes it difficult to ensure a unified distribution of money. For the recommendation to be valid, it should thus be ensured that every farmer growing this new type of millet regularly receives a sufficient amount of money. Lastly, it is hypothesized that people will readily adopt the new type of millet because they are already used to eating millet. This is questionable, though, because the people may not be willing to eat even more of it. Instead, they might prefer more fruits or vegetables which they currently do not have access to. There is no information what the people in the country yearn for the most - if this should be more millet, then the recommendation would be logical. To summarize, whether this recommendation should be followed depends on several unanswered questions such as the importance of vitamin A, possible side effects of too much vitamin A, how exactly the heightened costs will be accounted for, and if the people in fact would like the new millet. Cogent answers to these questions are necessary to evaluate the claim that the government should do everything possible to promote the new millet.

  14. Hi all, I’m a German student applying to Social Psychology PhDs in the US and asked one of my German professors to write me a LOR. He’s definitely willing to do so and knows me extremely well but is not sure what to emphasize in his letter. He asked whether I could tell him what professors/admission committees are especially looking for so that he could include this information. He already has written some LORs, but standards in Germany probably differ from those in the US. Of course I don’t have any real LORs to look at as a guide, so I’m asking you what is most important in your opinion? Maybe especially for (social) psychology?

This whole surgery thing is real crap (sorry), I have an appointment next week and will ask how soon I have to schedule it, but I'm pretty sure it's something like a few months. I planned to do it as early as possible so that I'd have enough time to recover (no sports for 1 year, no heavy lifting for 1 year etc.. it's going to be fun). Anyway, thank you!!
  16. Hi there, I'd like to know two things: 1) Would it be too late to take the GRE on October 30th for Deadlines on December 1st? I saw that submitting the scores officially takes only 10-15 days but still people here seem to take the test earlier.. 2) The latest possible notification whether one's accepted or not is April 15th, right? If I get accepted just then, would there be any school visits or other important appointments scheduled shortly after (I'm an international student)? I'll probably have to undergo spine surgery next year around that time and have to plan the date of the surgery accordingly since recovering afterwards will take at least 4 weeks. Thanks for any advice!
  17. Depending on the visa, I think I'd only be allowed to work 20 hrs/week, not sure if that would be enough. But good to know that this is an option.

So, if some schools say that the usual time to finish is 5 years but their financial aid is only guaranteed for 4 years, this still means that I should better be done within 4 years because the 5th year is not guaranteed? In general I'm not concerned to need more time because I'll already have a masters with a lot of relevant courses and at some schools, I could even transfer some credits. But I'll definitely ask the schools to get a feeling for how this issue is handled.
  19. Hi, I'm a student from Germany and thinking about applying to US PhD programs at Business Schools and/or Psychology Departments. I would only apply to prestigious schools because otherwise it wouldn't be worth the effort and personal sacrifices for me. If I get it right, top programs at private schools usually give full financial aid to admitted students (no tuition fees, living stipends etc.). Still, I sometimes read information such as "It is expected that a similar level of financial aid may be awarded for up to 5 years". I get that the money is contingent upon satisfactory progress, but the word "expected" makes me feel a little bit insecure. Does that mean that in some cases, you don't get funding after some years? I couldn't even afford one unfunded year and I would be hesitant to apply to programs where I'd have to worry about that. So, short version: How often does it happen that your funding ends before you're finished (assuming that it takes you the regular 5 years)? Especially at top tier programs? Thanks for any advice!
  20. Hi, I'm a German psych Student und you're right, I don't think there are Master's programs entirely in English, at least not clinical ones. Unfortunately, we don't have many international students in our programs. There may be some seminars in English, but not complete programs. If you can't speak German, it will be very difficult - especially for clinical programs, where they put an emphasis on simulating talking to patients etc. If you post links to the sites showing that there are such programs, maybe I could help more?
  21. Thanks for the answers! Yes, 1 is highest and 5 is lowest. I saw that there is even a table on my English Transcript of Records (my German university provided it) where they categorize the grades and 1.0 to 1.5 is "excellent".
  22. Hi there, I was reading through this forum and find it extremely helpful. Since I’m not from the US and don’t know the whole grad school system so well, I’m not entirely sure how competitive I am for applying for a PhD (although I think I've got lots of experience). I'm looking for either social or I/O PhDs, maybe also OB at a Business School would be suitable. I have many interests and I'm not completely sure which path would be most interesting for me.. Anyway, it would be very nice if I could get some comments on my profile. Education: BS in Psychology (3 year program) from a German university, GPA 1.3 on a scale from 1 to 5 (not sure how to convert and unfortunately they don’t give us %), studied for 1 year in Paris (so took me 4 years to complete the BS) Currently in a MS I/O psych program (2 years, finished the 1st) at the same German university, I only have a few grades by now but think that my final GPA shouldn’t be too different from the undergrad GPA I haven’t looked at the GRE yet, but I think I wouldn’t score too bad, I like standardized tests (took the TOEFL iBT last year and scored 114 out of 120) Research experience: 8 months research intern in Psycholinguistics and Cognitive Neuroscience Department; designed and conducted a study, analyzed the data, wrote a report and presented the results in colloquium (together with another student) 1.5 years as student assistant in the Department of Marketing (at Business School of my university), although this was not soo much about research, but I also assisted in conducting some studies, entered data, reviewed papers etc. my undergrad thesis was very good (my supervisor said that it was the best he had seen from the 50 he had supervised), it’s now in the second review process after revise & resubmit (I'm first author); the data was presented as a poster twice (one time won the overall poster prize of the conference, other time appeared in the proceedings) and once as a talk, but all conferences were in Germany, will submit it to an international conference in 2015 currently visiting student conducting research in a Psych Lab at Princeton University for 3 months I don't know if this counts as research experience since I don't know if US colleges have the same seminars included in their curriculum: 2 semester coursework where I, together with 3 fellow students, designed and conducted a study in the field of Social Psych, analyzed the data, and wrote a report 1 semester coursework where I, together with 3 fellow students, designed and validated a questionnaire and wrote a report about it Relevant work experience (I know that it's not really relevant for PhD applications though): 6 weeks intern at a psychotherapy clinic several months part-time intern at central course guidance of the university one semester tutor for diagnostic interviewing will do a 3 month internship at a consulting company with HR focus in 2015 I could get a great LOR from my undergrad supervisor, I think that the professor from Princeton would also write me one, I’m not so sure whom to ask about the 3rd, but I think of doing another research internship during my last two semesters in Germany. It may be good to know that I’d apply for Fall 2016 and I’ll be 26 by then, don’t know if that matters. Sorry for the long post, thanks for reading!
