  1. Were you contacted by a POI or a program coordinator? Gahhh I'm still holding out hope for this program. Congrats on the interview though. If you don't mind me asking, what are your stats? I'm interested in knowing what they're looking for.
  2. I had a similar email response from the Graduate Coordinator for Evolutionary Anthropology and he said they were meeting to make some decisions today. He didn't specify if there would be interviews or not though. I would assume if there are interviews those of us selected will find out this week. If they do outright acceptances, they may keep us waiting longer. I don't know if this applies to Cultural Anthro as well. Good luck!
  3. I emailed him at the canine cog lab and got a quick response. He's doing field work in the Congo until March now, so I don't know if he's responding often. It seems as though all his emails are connected because when I emailed the cog lab and auto response came from a gmail or duke account. Otherwise, I don't know about volunteering. If I have the chance to talk with him this spring should the interview gods see fit, I'll ask for ya.
  4. I'm not a CS person, but I know in biology there are subgroups. How were your percentages in each subgroup. If you aced the subgroups aside from systems and networking, and you don't plan on applying for a systems and networking heavy program, I think you are fine and could justifiably submit them. If the percentages across the board are 76 then I would ask more CS people.
  5. I have three POI in the department who I would be equally happy working with. Hare is one of them. He was very nice in emails. Other than that I can't say much as I have yet to visit. He seems to be a very popular choice as far as POIs are concerned so expect stiff competition.
  6. I applied to 3 schools and 4 programs.. in my case, I'm turning 22 in March and it's my first round of applications, so I can honestly tell them that I didn't have safety schools on my list. I have all the time in the world as far as I'm concerned, so this year, I didn't want to put myself in a position where I might settle. That being said, I think I'll openly tell them that I didn't have safety schools and that my acceptance will be largely based on funding. Though I'd like to attend any of the schools on my list, it's unlikely that I'll pass up full fellowship funding from one school for TAships at another.
  7. To me, the masters sounds like the safer option if you really know you want to work with that POI. Alternately, taking a year off may improve your application, but you will have as much if not more competition next year if the economy doesn't rebound.. so although your application might be better..so might all the other applicants who didn't get in the year before. Personally, if I knew I could do the masters and transition, I would do that.
  8. I'm interested in a few things about Notre Dame. As far as the weather is concerned.. if anyone can speak to this, is the weather comparable to Upstate/Central NY lake effect snow? I've been there, done that, and I can deal with it. Or is it substantially worse? Any equestrians here? I'm looking to board my horse if I attend and I want to find a nice, reputable barn. I'm checking out the one that the equestrian team uses, but I'd like to hear from anyone who rides or has horses in the area. Also, I have a moderate car payment $300 a month including my insurance payment... will this be do-able on a stipend of $20,000-30,000 a year with housing as well? I'm trying my darnedest to pay it off before this Fall, but I'm not positive that will happen. As far as housing goes, does anybody know of pet friendly housing in the area? I'm willing to have a roommate, but I want to bring my two cats and as far as I could see all the grad housing options don't allow pets in dorms. I may look into buying a house, I imagine it is fairly easy to find roommates.. anybody have experience with this?
  9. I'm waiting to hear from Duke Ev. Anthropology as well. In the past they've taken 6 or so students.. I hope the situation really isn't as grim as only 2-3. I also applied to the Nicholas School at Duke, so we'll see.
  10. I'm curious (I think I found the answer.. but I'm not positive) can this award be used for students who want to enroll abroad? I didn't apply abroad because those schools required much earlier applications to be considered for funding, but I imagine some of those programs would accept last minutes students who come with three years of funding from the NSF. Has anybody whose been awarded the NSF entered a program outside the US? I thought I read that this was acceptable.. but I couldn't find it in the FAQ sections.

  12. All my stuff is showing up as received, I would double check with them this week just to be safe. The deadline for my program was the first week of December... so if you program had a similar deadline I would check on it.
  13. Great, thanks for the info, I was 90% sure that was the case, but I was a basket case from gre prep, application writing, ect.... so who knows what I overlooked. I didn't want to call without being entirely sure that I had done my part of getting the scores submitted.
  14. I live close to one of the schools I'm applying to. I personally find it difficult to ascertain from websites what a program is actually like, so I contacted students and professors and visited them this past fall before I had to apply. Long story short, I loved it, so I at least know that the application money was well spent. It really helped me with the application process.
  15. Quick question.. I was under the impression that the NSF gets our GRE scores based on the registration number we provide them. I foolishly just rechecked my application status after not looking since all of my recommenders had submitted and I saw my GREs were not received. Albeit, they aren't stellar, they are pretty good and I wanted to submit them (V:680 Q:700 AW:5.5). So, was I supposed to put down a code for the NSF to have scores sent when I took the GRE, or were they supposed to get them? Either way, I'm going to call them this week and hopefully clear it up before it is too late in the review process.
